Endocrine System

• Endocrine comes from the Greek root “endo” coming from “crinis” meaning secretes.

• The endocrine system is a group of glands. Each secretes different types of hormones and regulates your metabolism, tissue function, growth and development, sexual function, mood and sleep, and reproduction.

Hypothalamus and Pituitary Gland• The hypothalamus is in control of the pituitary

gland. it controls many of the endocrine functions. It release hormones that are important to the female menstrual cycle, pregnancy, birth, and lactation.

Thyroid Gland• These hormones regulates metabolism, body

weight and temperature. The hormones released from the thyroid gland contains iodine, which is necessary to live. The government asked that iodine be put in salt to help encourage iodine consumption.

The Pancreas

• In the endocrine system, the pancrea’s function is to release insulin and glucagon to help regulate your bodies blood sugar, even though the pancreas has many other functions not involving the endocrine system.

Adrenal Gland

• This gland sits on the kidney. Parts of the adrenal gland releases adrenaline, which has many responses to fright, anger, caffeine, or low blood sugar.

Parathyroids

• The parathyroid glands are located by the thyroid glands. The parathyroid glands control how much calcium is in our bones. Even though these glands are located on the thyroid glands sometimes it has nothing to do with what the thyroid gland does.

The Gonads

• The male testes and female ovaries release hormones that regulate reproductive cycles and functions.

Pineal Gland

• The pineal gland is located in the center of the brain, is stimulated by the nerves from the eyes. This gland produces melatonin, which makes you tired. This gland also keeps your body on a regulated time clock.

• The endocrine system works with the nervous system, reproduction system, kidneys, liver, pancreas and fat to maintain and control body energy levels, reproduction, growth and development, internal balance of body systems (or homeostasis), and response to surroundings (stressors and injuries)

• There are 30 different types of hormones in our bodies.

• The hypothalamus gland makes you feel hungry and thirsty.

• The people that specialize in the endocrine system are called Endocrinologist.
