ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Better Liveable Town Representation

1. Introduction In the ENBE final project, we are going to pretend ourselves as the mayor of “X” town. Due to the reason that it is too crowded, we will need to propose a new “X” town for the residents.

This project has been separated into 2 parts, Part 1 is to pro-pose a better town individually by a video while in Part 2 a pro-posal among we and our group mates will be selected to make a real model of the town and also an A2 presentation board for fur-ther information. This project is assigned to us because it can ex-pose to us the elements of the natural and built environment in their basic unit, form and function.

In part A, we must conduct a series of researches about the past, present and future town and learn from the researches to create our own better town. The future town should be focused on the needs of the people, the facilities, infrastructure and its sustainability.

2. The City

1.1. The City Definition

City is a centre of population, commerce and culture. City is a place where peo-ple live that is larger and more important than a town. City gas complex systems for sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing and transportation. It is an area where people live and work.

1.2. What is the brief history

Through the history, cities have been founded at the intersections of trans-portation routes, to at points where goods must be shift from one mode of trans-portation to another, as at river or ocean ports. A city formed as central places of trade for the benefit of members living in close proximity to others facilitates in-teraction of all kind.

1.3. What makes a city / town

• proper infrastructure such as sewage management and road

• basic daily supply for the people such as electricity, water and food

• public transportation

• well organised city zoning

1.4. What makes a good town/ township (guidelines etc)

Environment/ habitat-safe, low pollution, pesticide-free living space and ecosystem throughout our watershed area and local ocean

Water-frugal use, water collection and non-toxic recycling of scarce water

Shelter-green housing and furnishings from local sources

Commerce and trade-locally owned and operated businesses providing needed goods and services-mostly local but importing a small number of goods we can’t produce here. Cor-poration must meet “triple bottom line” standard- good for “profits, people (cus-tomer/users) and planet”

Travel and transport-energy-efficient alternative transport. Commuter trains, bikes, electric vehicles etc

Security-maintaining peace and order locally with positive external alliances for mutual benefit. Finding and creating local sources of needed resources before they run out. Good local preparation for possible emergencies due to fire, drought, earth-quakes, climate change, food and fuel shortages

Energy-wind, solar etc. (use renewable energy)

Health care-integrative medicine using the best of traditional and modern medicine, pro-vided to all the community who need it. Emphasis on preventive care and health maintenance

Education - customised learning environments where the best in each individual is nur-

tured for the benefit of the whole community

1.1. When did it start? History and all

Babylon is the most famous city from ancient Mesopotamia whose ruins lie in modern day Iraq 94 kilometres southwest of Baghdad.

1.2. What makes is a significant city and what are the details?

The city was girt with brick walls and a broad deep moat. This city can be en-tered by 100 gates which arranged symmetrically, that were 25 in each side. The city was full of houses and had been laid out with its streets straight, those which run right angles lead to the river. Each road run to a small gate in the brick river-wall. The city also have education centre. The Hanging Gardens in Babylon is built in built high above the ground and the plants were not rooted in the earth like traditional garden. A whole network of canals was formed, and special offi-cials appointed to supervise them. They made sure the canals were clear of rushes and water weeds, the course ways dredged of silt, and the banks consoli-dated against floods. Water cascaded down from a reservoir-lake over the vege-tation beneath. Troughs and channels were built into the irrigation system, and lined with non-rusting metals such as lead and bronze. The irrigation was based on terracing which allows gravity to carry the water from the highest point and water all of the plants. The Mesopotamians also used a series of buckets on a wire to carry water up from wells and to the highest points along the terraces. These chain pumps were usually powered by slaves.

1.3. Conclusion of the city

The Babylonians were very wise because they can solve the problem of irriga-tion without the knowledge of modern engineering. They built the a network of canals and chain pump to carry the water from the Euphrates River to water the crops and plants.

Portland, Oregon

Portland is one of the greenest city in the world. Portland has implemented extensive green urban planning. Half of the power in Portland comes from renewable sources. The city has developed 92000 acres of green spaces with a connected system of trails and parks ideal for walking and biking. Portland has the highest rate of biking to work of any United States city and it was one of the first cities to develop a master plan for pedestrians.

The transit options in Portland include bus service and options unique to this city such as the MAX light rail, WES commuter rail and the Portland streetcar. An urban-growth boundary has been established to contain the urban landscape and protect the 25 million acres of forest and farms that surround the city.

Portland as one of the greenest city in the world has a high potential to become a fine future city. The use of renewable energy resources for the city power supply and green spaces in the city that is suitable for walking and biking can be implemented in my future town to make it more sustain-able. The efficient public transports in the city can also lower down the rate of air pollution of the city. This shows that it is important to have effi-cient public transport in a town to decrease the air pollution in my future town.

6. The ZES Town1.1. How did you came up with the solution to create this new town

The previous town is too crowded because of the rise of population in the town. The town can no longer support the large number of residents and their needs. As the mayor of the town, I must create a new town for my people to continue their lives. For the type of town my group mates and I have chosen is a town on a small island. The reason we chosen this type of town is because water is a nat-ural barrier that provides protection to the people. The water can also provide source of food and transportation to the people. A town on an island can also be developed into a tourist hotspot to have powerful economic source.

1.2. What is the important characteristic and elements

My town has an irregular island shape with the area of 23.5 km2 and population of 80000 residents. The elements that I will be focused on are transportation, power and water supply and green technologies.

(1) Transportation

Transport is really important in a town be-cause it allows the people to move from 1 place to another. Due to the small sized of the town, the people are encourage to cycle and walk in the city. There will be only bicy-

cle tracks and pedestrian walkways in the town. For public transportation, sub-way is provided to the residents.

These are the subway lines in the town

(2) Power and Water Supply

In my town, all of the power comes from renewable sources by installing wind-mills at the seaside. The strong airflows at the seasides will turn the windmill tur-

bines and convert into electricity and supply to all the residents on the island. A town on a

small island is all surrounded by the sea, it is very hard to get ground water and fresh water. So I come out with an idea to have a rainwater harvesting system and desali-nation system to filter the water and send to the residents.

(3) Green technologies

To create a greener and healthier town, cars are barred in the town. With no car in the town, the rate of air pollution in the town will be decreased. The buildings in my town will all be having green roofs. Green roofs buildings contribute to the cooling the temperature of the surroundings and hence reduce the usage of air conditioner and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. There will have a so-lar-powered fountain at the town square instead of using traditional electrical-powered fountain. The solar panels on the fountain will convert the solar energy

into electricity. Therefore the fountain will light up auto-matically in the night.

(4) Vertical Farm

For the agriculture in the town, the town will be highlighting vertical farming rather than traditional farming method which is planting on the ground. This is because by using verti- cal farming this method, the precious land can be kept for other use. The high ver- tical farming building can increase the num- ber of crops planted compared to the same size of land used to plant the crops.

The Zoning of ZES Town

The Master Plan of ZES Town

From the master plan, we can see that the factories are located very near to the port. This is because the strategic position allows the factories to send the

products to the port for exportation and it is easier to get raw materials from the port. The business buildings are placed near the factories so that it is easy to control the factory management. There are also theme park and shopping mall built at the area around the hotel. It is convenient to the tourists to play and shopping in the town. There are two types of condominiums provided to the resi-dents, that is high cost condominium which built near the sea side and have nice view and low cost condominiums. The agriculture and livestock section is sepa-rated so that it is easy to manage. The market is built at in front of the livestock section so that the food supply can be easily sent to the market and sell to the people. A water management centre is built in the agriculture area so that the water can be sent to water the crop easily. The wind power station is built at the seaside because the strong wind can generate more electricity and meet the needs of the people. The fire station, hospital and police station are located near the town centre so that they can move to any place that call for emergency. The town square is placed at the town centre serve as a tourist hotspot and the shop-houses around it allow the tourists to shopping.

1.4. Conclusion about the ZES Town

In my opinion, a future town does not mean that it should be full of futuristic buildings and high-tech but not environmentally friendly technologies, but it should be sustainable and liveable to the people. That is why the ZES Town does not have fancy, futuristic buildings but green and sustainable buildings. ZES Town might not be appealing town but with the green technologies implemented in the town, it will be a simple yet eco-friendly and sustainable city.

7. Conclusion From this project, I truly understand planning a town is not an easy task. From the shape of the town, grid system and the facilities provided in the town all the stages are essential and require many researches to produce a better future town to meet the people’s needs.

From the researches about the ancient, present and future or better city, I have learnt that what people need and what they need in the future and also what the environments need is just the lower pollution rate in all as-pects. The earth is dying slowly due to the pollution and it will eventually affect us. So it is very important to implement the green technologies in the town as there are already many cities in the world had implemented green technologies in their cities in order to maintain the mutualism be-tween the environments and the humans.
