RIVERSTONE ECO RESORT

We went there for 2 days and a night. The objective we went there was understanding nature, and make a video to let people be more aware how danger is the ecology now. Everyone of us needed to investigate at least 1 species of an animal and a plant. Also, we are required to create an infographic poster by adding our findings.

PLANT SPECIES-COGON GRASS

Scientific name: Imperata Cylindrica

Can be found in:-South America and most of the countries in Asia

Live in hot climate conditions

Grow in the soil of pH value 4.0-7.5

Incapable of self-pollination, produces viable seed only when cross-pollinated

Increases growth rate at 23°C - 29°C

Can still survive under the temperature as low as 14°C

SKETCHING OF PLANTAlso known as: -Blady Grass or Speargrass

Characteristics: -Upright arching form, leaves are flat, wide, coarse, pointed and about 1-1.5cm wide. Leaves can reach about 5 feet of height.-Stems are strong, bamboo-like, upright and stout.

Usage:-Utilized as ground cover and plant as specimen, backdrop and accent plant.

Habitat:-Grow on wet land, dry land, areas of high salinity.

INSECT SPECIES-YAMFLY

Scientific name: Loxura Atymnus

Family:  A species of lycaenid or blue butterfly

Found in: Most of the Asia countries

-Rich orange on both upper side and underside -Broadtail extending from vein 2 of the hind wing, terminating in a blackened end with white tip

-3 pairs of walking legs

-Wing are not transparent

SKETCHING OF INSECTLife cycle:-Egg is dome-shaped and purplish-white in colour.-Caterpillar is slug-shaped, shiny olive green with whitish striations along the length of the back.

Lifespan:-Average lifespan of about 1 month.

Adult behavior:-Wings held half-open on folliage or sititing on leaves close to the ground-Imbibing water from wet rock by expelling water from the anus onto rocks to dissolve minerals.

INTERESTING PART

The most interesting part at my site was few different types of animals and plants can be found that. The tree was the center of all, the fishes hide themselves under the roots as their shelter.

5 SENSES

Sight-Green grass and trees are all around the resort. There were few scenes that attracted me the most were the migrating of ants, all butterflies were lying on the ground and the fish hid under the tree roots

Page 11: Enbe powerpoint

Hear- I can hear the sounds of cricket and birds in

early morning. Splashing of water along the river whenever I walked past.

Page 12: Enbe powerpoint

Taste- I have tried to drink the water, it was tasteless but colder and fresh. The food provided was good. The grass I investigated has a rough surface and it tasted like ginger to me.

Page 13: Enbe powerpoint

Smell-The smell of cogon grass was exactly like a ginger. I smelled the fresh air when walking on the pathway to my site.

Page 14: Enbe powerpoint

Feel- Feel refresh when walking in the cool water and the cool breeze when walking in it.

UNDERSTANDING OF ECOSYSTEM

Ecosystem is a community of living organisms in conjunction with their environments such as air, soil, water and other aspects. In our site, we found out that the 2 rubber trees were the center of plant and animals. Firstly, the rubber trees that growing by the river were obtaining nutrients from the water and acidic pH value of soil type. Next, the roots of rubber trees provided a shelter to fishes, ants and frogs as well. The flowers grew around those trees were supplying food to 2 different types of butterflies we investigated. Imagine the absence of rubber trees, we would not able to find such a bonding relationship between plants and animals in our site.

JOURNEY TO OUR SITE Early in the morning of 15th April, we gathered in Taylor’s University at 7.00am

We supposed to depart when 7.30a.m. but it was delayed until 8.00a.m.

About 9.00a.m., we finally reached the destination--- Riverstone Eco Resort. We were all impressed by the view of lake before we got there. After that, we went to our dorms and unload stuffs.

About 9.30a.m., we once gathered at the hall to be giving a brief.

15minutes later, we started off with selecting site. We were led to riverside and moved on our own to look for a nice spot. All of us were captivated by the beautiful butterflies that flying around the pathway. Our team had caught few different types of butterflies and then started doodling and sketching.

Page 17: Enbe powerpoint

Later on, we found a nice spot which had 2 rubber trees surrounded by plants and butterflies at first. We then found out there were even more animals and plants there.

At 12.30noon, we went back to the hunt and had our lunch.

After well-rested, we once again exploring in our site and then following the flow of water, we saw a very shocking scene where the place was full of rubbish and oily fluids floating on the water surface.

About 3p.m., we continued with exploring in our site. Suddenly, we got splashed by the other team’s members and wet from head to toes.

After that, we started the “War In Water” from 3.40p.m. until 7.00p.m.

We had our dinner at 7.30p.m., the food provided was good indeed. After that, we back to the forest again to find materials for night activity. Member of our team was well-contributed and finally got our Logo done very fast. We were then came out with the name “Generation-Y” as group name.

8.30p.m., the night activity started and we all were having fun because the unforgettable group--- “Archi-Banana” presented us their logo in a funny way.

Page 18: Enbe powerpoint

The night activity was ended by 11.30p.m., we ate the delicious red bean soup provided.

11.40p.m., we had a tutorial session with lecturer to show them our findings in site and got advices from them.

00.20a.m., due to tiredness, I slept within few minutes.

Page 19: Enbe powerpoint

5.00a.m., due to someone’s phone ringing, most of us was awaken by the noises . I prepared myself and walking around in the resort to see different scenes on different atmosphere.

7.00a.m., we had breakfast and continued by “Obstacle Challenge”, it was quite easy and I got bitten by a leech.

At 8.30a.m., we were given a task to build a raft. We started making our raft after the instructions were given.

9.00a.m., we went through a long pathway until a lakeside, we rafted and had some fun by splashing water to the other teams.

After that, we went back to the hunt and given the last brief. Before we left the resort, we were given a last chance to go back to our site, collect more information and pictures.

11.30a.m., we were told to pack up our stuffs and ready to go home. We took some pictures outside the hunt and batch’s photo.

1.30p.m., the bus had arrived to get us back to Taylor’s University.

OUR INFO GRAPHIC POSTEROur theme was Biostatistics which is actually providing information based on biological knowledge. These two pictures are showing the history, characteristics, habitat of our animals and plants.

Page 21: Enbe powerpoint

We found it interesting when we were done with calculating the population of animals. The number of tertiary consumer is the least and the most was the primary consumer. Also, we have investigated that different type of plants growing on different soil types because of the pH value of soil.
