Ms. Ducol actually gotthe bug for teachingwhen she tutored an-other student at her highschool. She continued totutor until becoming afull-time French teacherin 2015 at Pierre ElliottTrudeau ElementarySchool in Rosemount.

While she only joined GeneralVanier this academic year, she

made an immediate impact. “What I like the most about

my job is to see the studentsgrowing or improving so much,

whatever the point they arestarting from,” said Ms.

Ducol. “It is so rewarding. When a kid doesn't like

French, doesn't read or understandFrench or even has behavior prob-lems, it is so rewarding to see thatchange. This job allows us to helpchildren achieve their best !”

I love that I can make an environment where students are challenged, learn, tryagain, and succeed. It’s incrediblyrewarding to see students so proudof what they’ve designed.”

Ms. Molter was nominated by some of her students and col-leagues, citing her relaxed mannerand patience. She makes sure each class is enjoyable and instills confidence in her students.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

Looking back on 20 years of success

As we mark the 20th anniversarysince the Quebec government recre-ated public school boards alonglinguistic, rather than religious, lines I believe everyone associatedwith the English Montreal SchoolBoard has much to be proud of.

On July 1, 1998 the Englishsectors of the former ProtestantSchool Board of Greater Montreal, the Montreal Catholic SchoolCommission, the Commission scolaire Jérôme-Le Royer and theCommission scolaire Sainte-Croixmerged to form the EMSB. At thetime, the newly-formed board hadmore than 25,000 students in theyouth sector and 12,000 on theadult side. Two years later our enrolment at the primary and sec-ondary levels rose past 27,000.Soon after, the Quebec govern-ment adopted legislation strength-ening Bill 101. That development, along with demographics and alower birthrate led to a steady decline in our student population. But recently, we have happily seena turnaround where that is concerned. We now have 19,561students at the elementary andhigh school levels, a 267 jumpfrom last year. When our 2018-2019 totals come in later this fallwe expect the numbers to furtherimprove. As for Adult Educationand Vocational Services, there aremore than 23,000 students regis-tered – so nearly double the

amount from when we were firstestablished. With over 42,000 stu-dents in total, we remain thelargest English public schoolboard in the province.

Over the last number of yearswe have embarked upon some creative marketing and promo-tional campaigns while pouring alot of effort into our social mediaplatforms. This is all paying off.

I am proud to have been a commissioner at the EMSB fromday one and chairman since 2007.It has been an honour to fulfil thisrole at the board which now en-compasses my former high school,Vincent Massey Collegiate. My two daughters were EMSB studentsand I could not be happier withthe educations they received.

At 88.6 percent the EMSB hasthe highest Success Rate in theentire province of Quebec amongEnglish public school boards basedon a seven year cohort, figures released by the Ministère de l’Éducation et de l'Enseignementsupérieur (MEES) show. This isall the more impressive given thefact the province-wide success rateis 80.1 percent. This achievementwas made possible thanks to every-one associated with the EMSB,from our staff, parents, and vol-unteers and of course our students.

So pedagogically we are defi-nitely doing our job well!

Our mandate is to educate theyouth at the primary and second-ary levels while serving as a centre of lifelong learning in theadult and vocational sectors. Weare indeed fulfilling this role. Unquestionably the best part ofour jobs is venturing into theschools and centres, be it for a Career or Science Fair, a story-telling competition or a graduationceremony. To our commissioners, staff, students and parent volun-teers, we wish to extend thanks foryour commitment to the system.

I want to wish everyone a goodschool year!

It is hard to believe that we arealready marking the 20th anniver-sary of linguistic school boards inQuebec.

Prior to assuming the role ofDirector General of the EMSBjust over three years ago, I hadworked in the public educationsystem in variety of roles in theclassroom, as a vice-principal anda principal, a school commis-sioner and with the Ministry ofEducation. My two children alsoattended the EMSB. This pro-vided me with an excellent per-spective of how the role of schoolboards has evolved.

I am very fortunate at theEMSB to be backed up by anexcellent management team. These individuals work very hardto ensure that our students at all

levels get the best education andservices possible.

Our teachers do a fantasticjob and we make every effort to recognize them throughoutthe year, specifically on WorldTeachers Day in October, TeacherAppreciation Week in Februaryand National Teachers Day inMay. The latter is now being referred to as EMSB TeacherRecognition Day and our cere-mony is sponsored and coveredby Breakfast TV.

I must also salute our profes-sionals, support staff and volun-teers. This is a true team effortand none of what we haveachieved in recent years wouldhave been possible without thiscooperation.

Our enrolment is finally on theupswing and academically ourstudents continue to shine. Wecontinually repeat the stay inschool message. I am extremelyproud to be serving as the chair-man of Montreal Hooked onSchool. Our mission is to mobi-lize all partners in Montreal andto become a focal point for initia-tives that have a positive impacton young people, parents, andother concerned parties, with theobjective of increasing school perseverance and success. One ofour main objectives is to achieveand surpass Montreal’s ministerialhigh school graduation-rate targetof 77 percent by 2020. Proudly, allow me to add, that the EMSBlast year recorded a mark of 88.6 percent in this area.

We now move ahead towardsthe 2018-19 academic year and I look forward to working withour stakeholders to continue tobuild for the future. Provincialelections will take place in October and school boards willindeed be part of the conversationon the campaign trail. Schoolboard elections, which were sched-uled for November, have beenpostponed until 2020 as a form ofelectronic voting is considered.

I feel privileged to have expe-rienced this Board over the pasttwo decades from so many differ-ent vantage points. The public education system has much to offer and I urge everyone to em-brace this attitude as we continueto grow!

Joseph Perretta, his wife LinaDi Giovanni and their daughterAlexia, were recognized as theEMSB Volunteer Ambassadors ofthe Year. This award was createdin 2017, with football legend Anthony Calvillo becoming thefirst recipient.

The family owns the MontrealArctic Junior AAA hockey team.Players visit schools regularly topush the stay in school messageand take part in scrimmages. Theygive thousands of free ticketsaway to students each season andprovide opportunities for aspiringsingers to perform the nationalanthem. The EMSB logo even

appears on team jerseys and ontheir website. It is a true and unprecedented partnership.

While Joseph is the owner andteam president, Lina serves asvice-president and oversees com-munity outreach and game day operations. Alexia, graduating thissemester from Concordia Univer-sity, handles marketing and socialmedia. When Alexia attendedDalkeith Elementary School, JohnPaul I Junior High School andLaurier Macdonald High School,Lina was extremely active in avolunteer role.

“I volunteered for 13 years, since Alexia was in Pre-K all the way up to Secondary V,” Linasaid. “I was in PPO's, GoverningBoards, served as a regional dele-gate many times and sat on a variety of other committees, in-cluding CPC. I have to say that

I was quite busy volunteering forthe EMSB and I loved everyminute of it, especially the re-warding feeling of seeing a child'sbig smile or a hug from a childand knowing that as a volunteeryou definitely make a differencein their life.”

Lina’s giftware/jewelry noveltystore in RDP, Décor En Folie, re-mains a popular stop for schoolofficials looking to buy giftware.

For Lina, Joseph and Alexia, hockey was always a favorite pastime; they loved watching theCanadiens on TV, or playing thesport with friends as they are busyrunning their own companies. Thatwas what they knew, until they at-tended one of the Arctic’s gamesduring the 2013-2014 season.

“My cousin invited us to watchhis son play hockey,” said Lina.“He had been playing for so longand we had never gotten a chanceto see him play, so we went as afamily to watch. We haven’tmissed a game since. We fell inlove with the hockey players, theirparents and the whole idea ofteamwork and community. Thedetermination the players showeddespite having inferior equipmentwas just inspiring to us. Imagine, they have to balance school, part-time jobs and being on the ice fivetimes a week for practice andgames. It’s incredible!”

After just a couple of months ofbeing dedicated super fans, Josephand Lina decided that the teamneeded more than just their support

in the stands; they needed it at theownership level. “We bought theteam because we believe in theplayers,” Lina explained. “Wewant to give them the chance toplay at their full capacity.”

The family has invested a significant amount of money inthe team, with no expectation ofany financial returns. Junior AAAteams do not come anywhereclose to making money. Buyingnew uniforms, top of the lineequipment and arranging properice time for practice were someof the improvements they imple-mented. “This isn’t a venture to

make money,” explained Joseph.“We know we will lose moneyevery year, but this is an opportu-nity to help your community. Wewant to give these boys the sup-port they need to succeed, both onthe ice and off of it.”

Lina added, “We are showingour daughter and others that lifeis not always about what’s in itfor ourselves, but it’s important todo good for others. I know it’sgoing to be a big adventure, butwe are very happy and determinedto succeed.”

Many of the players are EMSBgrads, so it is exciting when they

return to their former schools. Acase in point is forward KevinRicci, who was part of the LesterB. Pearson High School Sports-Études program. He joined thefamily at the event.

On another front, Lina hasbeen at the forefront of sensi-tizing students to brain tumourawareness. She launched theFranco Di Giovanni Foundationin 2004. It is named in honour ofher late father who had lost hisbattle with Glioblastoma, an in-curable form of brain cancer. Allproceeds go for brain tumour research at the Montreal Neuro-logical Institute and Hospital.“When my father died in 2002from a malignant brain tumour, I didn't want his death to becomejust another statistic....I wantedto make adifference and that'swhen I started the Foundation,”Lina said. “My committee hasraised over $340,000.00 for braintumour research, specifically forDr. Rolando Del Maestro's re-search lab and simulation centerat the Neuro.”

Many schools had bake sales,dress-down days and other fund -raising events. The annual FrancoDi Giovanni Foundation Gala isheld each April at Prima Luna Reception Hall. Alexia won theYoung Philanthropy Award in2010 for all of Quebec for hervolunteer work with the Founda-tion. She was in fact nominatedby the Neuro.

The EMSB’s Commitment-to-Success Plan has been approved bythe Ministère de l’Éducation et del’Enseignement Supérieur (MEES)for implementation in the 2018-2019 academic year. In preparingthis documentation, a wide consul-

tation was carried out, which wentbeyond the requirements of the Education Act. Commissioners, senior management, school admin-istrators, professionals, parents'and student committees, unionsand governing boards were all

invited to reflect on the currentchallenges which relate to studentsuccess and to participate in de-termining the new priorities andobjectives which will guide theBoard in the years to come. In sev-eral cases, a second consultation

was held to present to a group anoverview of the results of the firstconsultation and to continue thediscussion with a view to the iden-tification of priorities. A wide andrich variety of observations weremade by the various parties, iden-

tifying strengths and weaknesses, achievements and concerns. Former EMSB Director General Antonio Lacroce and Sam Boskey, who recently retired from theMEES, served as special consult-ants to the Board for this project.

Allison Engo, a Secondary IV student at Royal West Academy inMontreal West, competed in the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawalast spring and returned home with a gold medal. She also received a $4,000 Entrance Scholarship from Western University. Her projectwas entitled How Fly Are Antioxidants? In her research she tried to determine whether antioxidants had any benefits for fruit flies orwhether it applies to humans. "It was an experience I will rememberfor the rest of my life," she says. behind this initiative was to engage

students in a positive milieu where

of transitioning to high school was

chosen because EMSAC students

felt it is a difficult rite of passage

The EMSB Express is pleasedto introduce a new feature: SchoolProfiles.

In this edition we focus onJames Lyng High School in St.Henri, which has gained a well-deserved reputation as Montreal’spremiere Urban Arts High School.

The team at James Lyng uniteshigh school, university and com-munity to support student learning, empowerment, and self-expres-sion through the arts. It partnersteachers with hip-hop, urban art,and street artists to develop and

collaborate with teachers acrossthe curriculum, in subjects rangingfrom Math and Science to PhysicalEducation and French.

The collaboration betweenteacher and artist is supported by subject-area specialists fromMcGill’s Faculty of Education. At the heart of the initiative is student success. This new student-centered curriculum makes learn-ing experiential and takes into consideration all learning styles.

James Lyng is also home to The Work-Oriented Training Path -

way (WOTP), a one-year programduring which students spend threedays per week in class and twodays in a work-study programSome possible work-study scena -rios involve: learning how to fix and maintain bikes; working ina hardware store or retail environ -ment; working in a communitycentre or after-school program;and developing food preparationskills in a restaurant setting andlots more!

The school also serves as aCommunity Learning Centre (CLC).

Working with LEARN Quebec, schools that are CLCs invest inpartnerships that provide a rangeof services and activities, oftenbeyond the school day, to helpmeet the needs of learners, theirfamilies, and the wider community.Their aim is to support the holis -tic development of citizens andcommunities. Mikaela Goldsmithserves as the community develop -ment agent for the CLC.

Lino Buttino is the newPrincipal of James Lyng HighSchool. He succeeds DerrekCauchi, who is now the Principalof Sinclair Laird ElementarySchool in Park Extension. Mr.Cauchi played an important role in the development of the UrbanArts Program as did his prede -cessor Angela Vaudry, presentlythe Principal of John Grant andLINKS High Schools.

Students from the entre -preneur class at James Lyngcompleted a four-month processin which they worked withartists to create new schooluniform designs, screen-printeduniform samples, conducted abroad consultation in the schooland received approval from theschool’s governing bodies.

The students worked withlocal artists Sam Karimi, JimmyBaptiste, Earth Crusher andHenley Germain to createuniform designs. With KevinNombrado from the Letterbet, alocal screen-printing business, the students learned how toscreen-print their uniformdesigns on shirts and sweat -shirts. The class then created a survey to seek input fromstudents and staff to gaugewhich uniforms received themost support. The feedbackfrom both students and staff wasvery positive.

The class analyzed the datafrom the survey to create aproposal on a new uniform for the school’s staff council and governing board. Havingreceived approval from theschool’s governing bodies, the

new uniforms will be adopted atthe beginning of next schoolyear. The entrepreneurship classscreen printed uniforms for the

entire school for this academicyear. “By giving students greaterchoice to express themselves, wecan create a better school

environment,” said James LyngStudent Sarha Garbowski, “Thevery fact that this design wascreated by James Lyng High

School students and that thestudent body was consulted in itscreation makes it a uniform thatwe can all feel proud of.”

Students from James LyngHigh School recently unveiledtwo newly built bike generatorson which will allow them topower a blender and a set ofspeakers. Guests at the launchwere even able to enjoy a freesmoothie made with the bike pow-ered blender, using the school’svegetable garden harvests.

Alison Manuel, one of JamesLyng’s science teachers, saw thather students were struggling tolearn the Quebec Technology cur-riculum. She subsequently wentsearching for innovative ideas totransmit the class’s concepts. Inorder to satisfy both the curricu-lum requirements and students’ interests, Ms. Manuel decided to set up a bike repair shop withand for her students. Through the school’s Community LearningCenter she received the support of multiple partners, such as theEco-Quartier Sud-Ouest, YouthFusion and McGill’s Educationdepartment.

The cross curricular unit in-creased student engagement andlearning, and therefore school perseverance. With its focus onsustainability, the unit also in-creased awareness of the envi-

ronmental and social benefits ofcycling, encouraging them to de-velop safe urban biking practices, and helping them to see them-selves as social change agents atthe local and international levels. The bike repair skills acquired canalso increase chances of employ-ability for the youth involved.

As a way to give back to thelocal and international commu-nity, the bikes are donated to local organization Cyclo Nord-Sud, which, in turn, delivers thesebikes to organizations in severalAfrican and Latin Americancountries to help support local so-cial and economic initiatives.

To take the project one stepfurther, some students along witha team from Eco-Quartier builttwo bike-machines as prototypesfor this year’s workshops. Throughthe Bike Repair Shop the schoolhired seven students who learnedbike-repair and horticulture withthe Eco-Quartier as part of a paidsummer internship.
