• compulsory requirement for all Diploma Programme students
• externally assessed; in combination with the grade for Theory of Knowledge
• a piece of independent research / investigation on a topic chosen by the student
• a formal piece of scholarship, with a prescribed format, requiring approximately 40 hours of work by the student
• each essay is to have an upper limit of 4000 words
• process will begin in Year 1 (Feb) and be completed in Year 2 (Oct)
• an in-depth study of a focused topic chosen from a list of approved Diploma Programme subjects
Theory of KnowledgeCore
Linked with Interdisciplinary Studies credit IDC4U in Year 1
Focus of the course is to establish a basis for making knowledge claims in any subject area. This requires students becoming aware of their personal biases, as well as understanding knowledge claims made by others. Students are required to develop strong analytical writing skills
The assessments include:
A. Individual Presentation (internally assessed, 20%)
B. Essay on Prescribed Titles: 1200- 1600 words (externally and internally assessed, 30%)
C. Coursework, essays, presentations, tests, and exams (internally assessed, 50%)
Examples of Prescribed Titles:
1) To what extent is truth different in mathematics, the arts, and ethics?
2) Examine the ways empirical evidence should be used to make progress in different areas of knowledge.
Creativity, Action, and ServiceCore
� Focus on 8 Learning Outcomes and Reflection on oneself
� Total 150 hours: 50 hours in each of Creativity, Action, and Service
� Begins September, IB Year 1
� Service hours can also be counted towards 40 hours OSSD requirement
� Emphasis on long-term commitment to a cause– MetoWe over 2 years
– Student Council work over 1 year– Stage Crew/Announcement Club, Power Club work over 8 months– Volunteer duties outside of school
� Devote 2 – 3 hours/week
