City Manager and

Director Updates

Cedar Rapids Sets New Record for Construction

Permit Valuation

We are very proud to share that the City of Cedar Rapids has set a new record for the total reported valuation of all building permits. For fiscal year 2018, the total valuation of building permits was $376 million, surpassing the previous record set in fiscal year 2012 by $29 million, and surpassing last year’s total by $130 million. This number reflects a growing number of public and private projects taking shape throughout our entire community, and includes residential, assisted living, industrial, and commercial. The top 20 projects represent work on both public and private development, ranging in size from $4 million to $24 million. A number of private development projects have contributed to this year’s growth, such as Lil’ Drug Store’s new 100,000 square foot world headquarters, located on Earhart Lane SW. New construction (commercial, single family, and multi-family) made up $183 million of the reported value for fiscal year 2018; while renovations, additions, and repairs made up $193 million.

Post-Flood Activities

The Cedar River crested overnight last Sunday/Monday at 15.5 feet, which is considered moderate flood stage and below the earlier projections of major flood stage level. With the City’s protection measures in place for an 18 feet crest, we did not find or receive any reports of flood damage. The City had monitored the protection system 24-hours a day until crest levels safely receded. The Public Works Department has been in the process of removing temporary flood protection measures such as concrete cones, pumps, plugs, and HESCO barriers. The majority of this material has been removed; there will be some restoration work such as sweeping and seeding that will take place over the next week or two. All roads impacted by flood activity or high river levels have been re-opened.

‘Historic Build’ Information Session Oct 11

With federal, state, and local funding now secured, the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance, the City of Cedar Rapids, and the US Army Corps of Engineers are proud to offer a unique workshop tailored to those who will play a key role in building new segments of permanent flood protection. Invitations are going out next week to construction, contractors, and building trades to learn more about upcoming biddable projects related to the Flood Control System. Sessions include speakers from both the City and the US Army Corps of Engineers. Two sessions will be offered:

Mastering Conflict

Citywide training for all employees on Mastering Conflict will be brought to each team starting October 1st. This one-hour, required training is the second session in a five-part series. Last year, we focused on Building Trust within our city teams. We discussed the importance of vulnerability in creating trusting relationships. City leaders, trained in organizational health, facilitated training sessions with teams throughout the city.

This year, we are focusing on the second level of the organizational health pyramid, conflict. This training will focus on the causes of conflict at work, city expectations related to healthy conflict, and 6 steps to engage in healthy conflict. In addition, we will discuss the concept of “Generous Intent”. Simply put, “Generous Intent” is giving the other person the benefit of the doubt. It is believing the best in our team members. Your manager/supervisor will be able to share more information about when your Mastering Conflict training will be held.

In an effort to support our focus on organizational health, city computers, building monitors and vehicles will display the City of Cedar Rapids Core Values and organizational health logo. This is part of the on-going organizational health campaign to promote and encourage teamwork within our teams and across the organization.

For more information about the organizational health initiative at the City of Cedar Rapids contact: Sue Sager,

Organizational Development Manager, [email protected], 319-777-1699.

Cedar Rapids Blood Drive Consider donating blood! On Wednesday, Sept. 19, City employees are coming

together to support the local blood supply. Your donation will stay local.

Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center (MVRBC) services both Mercy and

St. Luke’s Hospitals as well as the hospitals in Iowa City, and helps keep families

together. Support your friends, family, and neighbors by giving with us this fall.

Will you give at the Cedar Rapids Blood Drive?

Remember - YOUR donation can have a HUGE impact - every one donation

impacts the lives of 3 - 4 patients right here in our community! Please consider

scheduling an appointment.

Paving for Progress Thank You from Resident

“This is from Rod Lemon, 2227 Shady Oaks Ct off of Northwood. I wanted to let you know the construction crew have done a great job and were very helpful and courteous thru this whole process. More than once the men got off their machinery to answer a question or to help residents maneuver thru the construction. I could not ask for more or be more pleased with the outcome!!! Thanks to all!”
