Accommodation

It is a rare thing indeed for a true landmark house to come to the market in Ripley, let alone one that has been such a central part of village life for as long as ‘Cedar House’. With its origins dating back as far as the 1500’s, this is without question one of the village’s most historical houses and one that is instantly recognisable by its distinctive beamed elevations and its sheer prominence in the very heart of the village. In 1802, what was then The George Inn, was sold and divided up at which point ‘Cedar House’ became what it is now and since then has been various things to the village including a butchers, a tea room, a restaurant, an art gallery and now a unique and truly exceptional family home.

The property has been a true labour of love for our clients who have gone to great length and paid huge attention to detail to create a remarkable home that perfectly caters for the needs of modern day life, whilst at the same time being sympathetic towards such a historical building.

From the start and throughout, this is a home that just has something special about it, from the stunning beamed walls and ceilings to the heavy oak supports, the wonderful fireplaces to the oak panelling and then that intangible something that only comes from houses of this age; this is an exceptional home indeed. Add to all of this the flexibility that comes with a house that has an entirely separate cottage attached to it and it is hard to imagine a more perfect home for someone looking for something of this stature.

The main house has four principal reception rooms, all very individual in their style but all equally charming; three of which feature working open fireplaces that are such a delight through the winter.

Also accessed from the ground floor are three cellars, as well as lots of useful storage areas.

At the back of the house a beautifully refitted kitchen/breakfast room, also heavily beamed, very much feels like the heart of the house and is the perfect room for informal dining with the family or indeed entertaining. From here there is a door, which leads out onto the side terrace that works superbly with the kitchen when eating outside in the summer.

Upstairs

A beautiful oak staircase with oak panelling on the walls takes you up to the first floor where the bedrooms are all equally well proportioned, the master bedroom on the front particularly so and with a beautiful open fireplace with a cast iron horseshoe grate and its shuttered sash windows, this really is a very comfortable and attractive room.

The guest bedroom on the back looks out over the garden and has an en-suite shower room with fabulous wide oak floorboards, while the family bathroom has been stunningly re-modelled with a freestanding ball & claw foot bath, a separate shower and a beautiful twin washbasin stand. Up again and there are two further double bedrooms as well as a further bathroom.

The Cottage

Attached to ‘Cedar House’, the cottage is an entirely separate wing of the property that runs completely independently of the main house and makes quite a superb home in its own right as relative accommodation. Although the cottage can be reached from the main house, it does have its own front door and so has privacy and separation from ‘Cedar House’ to whatever extent you may wish.

The principal living room in the cottage has a wonderful high vaulted ceiling and has a fabulous feeling of light and space, and which creates a very warm and comfortable day-to-day living space. The kitchen is beautifully fitted and with doors that lead out onto the garden is a very practical room as well. Also, on this floor there is a very large and extremely well fitted home office and a bathroom, while upstairs there is a very cosy sitting room as well as two charming double bedrooms and a shower room. All in all, the cottage is a very impressive separate wing of the house that has a number of possible uses depending upon the needs of the buyer.

Externally

Without doubt, part of the pleasure of ‘Cedar House’ is its wonderfully private and sunny garden. Like the house, the garden has been lovingly tended and beautifully landscaped to give the house a delightful setting. Walled on all sides and lawned in the middle with two terraces that take advantage of both sun and shade this is a perfect spot for sitting out in the summer and enjoying a garden that feels like a real oasis of quiet and calm. The house also benefits from having its own garage.

Location

The historic village of Ripley is situated in a very accessible and convenient location just off the A3 north of Guildford. It is a village with a great deal of local history that comes through in the string of beautiful period buildings that line the High Street and which give it such a charming and pleasing feel. The village is surprisingly well stocked with local shops that very much cater for every day needs and has a number of traditional English pubs as well as several restaurants. The village green, which is purported to be one of the largest in England, is where the local cricket club reside and also plays host to a very popular monthly Farmers Market.

When you feel the need for bright lights and busy streets however rather than the gentle pace of the village, the beautiful county town of Guildford is just a short drive away with its historic cobbled High Street and all the shops that you could wish for while in the other direction the A3 will take you to London and indeed connects with the M25 for those times when you have need of its airports. Ripley as a whole is surrounded by miles of open countryside, much of which on the doorstep, where you can walk until your heart is content along footpaths and waterways. A short drive will take you out into the Surrey Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty. In all this is a superb English village setting within easy reach of the town and the countryside.
