EMBRACEBC SYMPOSIUM    

“EMBRACING DIFFERENCE, ENGAGING COMMUNITY” VANCOUVER, OCTOBER 11 &12TH, 2012 

CCAALLLL  FFOORR  PPRREESSEENNTTAATTIIOONNSS  Background EmbraceBC funds projects, tools and resources to bring diverse groups together to address racism and promote an increased awareness of cultural and religious diversity in British Columbia. October 11th and 12th, 2012 EmbraceBC will be hosting a two‐day symposium in Vancouver featuring presentations relevant to people working in the field of anti‐racism and multiculturalism.   The symposium will: 

offer a balanced emphasis on knowledge and skills; 

provide participants with a chance to learn, reflect and discuss approaches to addressing racism and promoting multiculturalism in B.C. communities; 

showcase best practices in B.C. as they relate to anti‐racism and multiculturalism; 

build knowledge and skills of trainers in the field of anti‐racism, diversity and multiculturalism in BC;  

and, foster a respectful and supportive atmosphere in which we all can gather to learn.  

Call for proposals The EmbraceBC Symposium Advisory Committee is inviting proposals for presentations. Successful presenters will have reduced travel costs to participate in the Symposium (minimum reimbursement of 50%).  Some full subsidies are also available for presenters outside of the lower mainland.  

Two categories of presentations 11.. BBeesstt  pprraaccttiicceess  pprreesseennttaattiioonnss::  2255  mmiinnss  ttoottaall  Presentations will describe projects that highlight “best practices” in the area of multiculturalism and anti‐racism AND that received funding from one of the following four EmbraceBC program elements:  

1. ARTS ENGAGEMENT 2. INTERFAITH BRIDGING 3. ORGANIZING AGAINST RACISM AND HATE  4. COMMUNITY DIALOGUES 

Presentation format should typically include 1 to 3 presenters with time dedicated for questions and answers.  Your presentation should describe the objectives, successes and challenges of the project. Presentations should accommodate 30‐50 people seated in theatre‐style.    

22.. TTrraaiinniinngg  ttoooollss  aanndd  ssttrraatteeggiieess  wwoorrkksshhooppss::  7755  mmiinnss  ttoottaall  Training tools and strategies workshops should fall within one of the following three themes as they relate to training in the area of racism and multiculturalism: 

1. FACILITATING DIFFICULT DISCUSSIONS (i.e. facilitating controversial topics, dealing with emotions, creating an open space for discussion, keeping the conversation on track, skillful interventions) 

2. FACILITATING LEARNING (i.e. interactive and innovative exercises or activities, training for supervisors) 3. ENSURING QUALITY OF FACILITATION (i.e. evaluating learning, identifying and meeting the needs of the 

host organization, facilitator self evaluation, keeping curriculum current).

Workshop format would typically include 1 to 2 presenters with time dedicated for discussion and interactive and/or experiential learning.  Presentations should accommodate 30‐50 people seated at roundtables.    

Audience The audience will likely have some familiarity with the concepts and practices related to anti‐racism and multiculturalism.  We expect the following people to attend: 

EmbraceBC contractors, current and past, across B.C. 

Anti‐racism/Diversity trainers across B.C. 

External stakeholders whose work connects with anti‐racism and multiculturalism, such as schools, post‐secondary institutions, non‐profit organizations, students, and government.

1. Title of Presentation 2. Category of presentation:    3. Name of presenter(s) and organizations, including a short bio of the presenter(s) (50 words or less) 4. Session Overview: Describe the presentation in 50 words or less.  5. Session Description: maximum one page describing the goals, content and format of the presentation, 

including the interactive activities you plan to use.  If the presentation is project focused, please include as part of your proposal the objectives, successes and challenges of the project. 

6. Target Audience: who would be most interested in your topic? 7. Resources provided: Additional hard copy or online resources related to the workshop’s theme. 8. Equipment List: flipchart, TV/VCR, DVD player, power point, overhead, other? 9. Primary contact information: name, primary affiliation, email, phone, fax, mailing address. 

 

PPRROOPPOOSSAALLSS  MMUUSSTT  BBEE  RREECCEEIIVVEEDD  BBYY  JJUULLYY  44TTHH,,  22001122..       Successful proposals will be notified by July 29th, 2012.  Final presentations (ie. PowerPoint presentation, script) will be required to be sent to EmbraceBC two weeks in advance of the symposium.  Note: Three display tables will also be available on‐site during the Symposium for distributing information and resources.
