EMBR4A conducts its Environmental Summit for CY 2018 The event also served as a platform to update and share the accomplishments of the EMB R4A on its mandates and functions in advocating Solid Waste Management. The highlights presented by RD Paranada were on the financial assistance awarded to the LGUs within CALABARZON to con- tinuously enable them to effectively implement RA 9003 and support the closure and rehabilitation of open dumpsites. Roy M. Loyola, Representative of 5th District, Cavite. Emphasis of the message was on the importance of education and incorporation of the methods and knowledge gained into action. He said Together let us continue working not only on preserving the beauty and natural balance of our ecosystem but also on changing the attitude of those inhabit- ing the environmentand added that the LGU plays a big part in shaping the attitude of their constituents. Hon. Loyola be- lieves that a strong solid waste management will spring from a strong cooperation among the people in the community. Effective Solid Waste Management is still an existing problem all over the country that pose a serious threat in peo- ples health and the environment. From 2012 to 2016, waste generation in the Philippines grew from 37,427.46 tons per day to 40,087.45 tons per day – most of these coming from Metro Manila with 9,212.92 tons per day due to its population and modernized lifestyle, followed by Region 4A (CALABARZON Region) contributing 4,440.15 tons per day or 11.8% of the 40,087.45 tons of waste generated due to its rapid industrial development and population increase. CALABARZON Region is practically set up to be the next major metropolis and thus the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) for Region 4A tirelessly commits to be proactive in addressing the needs of proper solid waste management as part of its mandate. And so, last July 24, 2018, EMB CALABARZON con- ducted its Annual Environmental Summit with the theme Sustaining Cooperation and Partnershipat Taal Vista, Hotel, Tagaytay City, Cavite. The said event was attended by various industries & Local Government Units (LGU) within the region showcasing their Best Environmental Technologies (BET) and Best Available Practices (BEP) being done for the continuous protection of the environment and its resources especially on proper solid waste management. Some of the attendees also prepared their exhibits with for a more interactive approach. Aside from the sharing of Best Practices and Technol- ogies, partners coming from both the private and public sector all over CALABARZON were also awarded with a plaque of appreciation to acknowledge their efforts and likewise inspire them as well as other industries to continue on developing envi- ronmentally sustainable programs and projects. “We at DENR EMB R4A continue to commit to give our best job to impact our environment… .We believe we can make change happen as long as we remain united in our passion to protect mother earth. - RD Noemi A. Mr. Rommel DL Peneyra, ESWM, MENRO of

LGU Carmona, Cavite also delivered an inspirational message

not only on preserving the beauty and natural balance of our

Effective Solid Waste Management is still an existing

to 40,087.45 tons per day – most of these coming from Metro

After which, Engr. Eligio T. Idelfonso, OIC, Executive Director of the National Solid

Waste Management Commission (NSWMC) presented on the milestones and challenges

regarding Ecological Solid Waste Management. Part of his presentation was on the com-

pliance of the LGUs on the provisions of RA 9003. According to him as of June this year,

133 LGUs nationwide has not yet submitted their Solid Waste Management Plan

(SWMP). In CALABARZON region, 84 LGUs already have their approved SWMP out of

the 142 LGUs in the Region, the remaining SWMP of 53 LGUs subject for approval while

a remaining 5 LGUs still required for submission. Updates on Solid Waste Management

were also discussed such as Policy issuances, on-going studies to support policy devel-

opment, as well as existing and upcoming SWM plans and programs.

This was followed by the inspirational message of the OIC, Assistant Director for

EMB, Engr. Vizminda A. Osorio who encouraged all the participants to be part of the solu-

tion as the bureau and the local government strive to solve the problem on Solid Waste

Management.

The awarding ceremony for the winners of the “Search for Cleanest and Green-

est Barangay“ was also conducted during the said event. Brgy. Rosario of Carmona, Ca-

vite; Brgy. Palocpoc I of Mendez Cavite; and Brgy. San Jose of Tagaytay, Cavite were

among the barangays that showed exemplary practices qualifying them as the top 3 re-

gional winners for the search. ###
