Mission Statement

We, the parishioners of St. Anthony-Kalihi bonded in faith and love of God, empowered by the Holy Spirit, give faithful witness to the love of Jesus

Christ in proclaiming the good news of salvation. We commit to the evangelization of the parish through spiritual renewal and formation. We promote justice, peace and respect for human life by caring and serving the poor, the sick and the needy. We firmly resolve to

further the mission for the glory and reign of God on earth.

Family Resources

Choose one of the following activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings:

• The Kingdom of God is a treasure beyond price. Take time to examine your treasures in this life. Make a family treasure box. Have the members of your family place one of their prized treasures in the box. If their treasure cannot be placed in the box, have them write its name on a piece of paper and put that in the box. Talk about those treasures and why they are so meaningful to each person. Sit down around the treasure box. Talk about God’s love and the treasure of God’s kingdom. Have your family write down some spiritual treasures that they wish to cultivate. Place the notes in the treasure box.

• Enjoy the treasure of family time

together. Go on a picnic, go swimming, or do some other family activity you enjoy.

• Jesus told some parables to help his

disciples understand the Kingdom of God. Read the parables from today’s Gospel to your family. Discuss: Which parable do you like best?

• Examine ways to simplify your

lifestyle as a family. Together with your family make a list of what you value most in life. Post the list on your refrigerator as a reminder to invest your time and your resources toward what you treasure most.

Our Sunday Visitor Lifelong Catechesis

Journal

• The man in today’s Gospel sells all that he has out of joy. Do you allow yourself to feel the joy of loving and being loved by Christ? Or do you keep your distance from Him?

• Do you view the Lord’s command

as helpful guidance? Or are they rules contrary to your natural inclination? How can you fix that?

• Do you take time to consider how

God wants you to respond to a situation, or do you react quickly? What happens as a result?

• Do you try to make decisions on

your own, or do you consult someone wise first? Why?

Challenge for the Week

This week, fast from an earthly item you really enjoy, like soda, listening to music in the car, etc. Every time you would normally use it, pray for the gift of wisdom. As much as you like this earthly item, spending a week without it will show you that it really doesn’t matter to you that much. Your true treasure lies in heaven. LifeTeen Ascend

LIVE THE LITURGY When a merchant finally finds a priceless, perfect pearl, he sells all he has and buys it. He does this because that pearl matters to him. It has significance and brings a depth of joy like none other. What matters and is of importance to you? When what matters to us has something to do with the kingdom of God, God is delighted. His exuberant happiness is hard to contain because He knows that we are happy stumbling upon this beautiful wisdom. Ask God to help discover this pearl of great price. There are many things competing for our attention every day. But not all of these things are important. We focus too much energy on the unimportant, superficial stuff and neglect paying attention to the things that really make a difference and have the greatest impact. Things all too easily become more significant than people, and our agendas become more essential than God’s. We do not have to empty our bank accounts and totally detach from everything we have in order to serve God. But we are asked to prioritize our lives and make what matters to God what matters most to us. In doing so, when we rise each day, we will be able to see what really needs our attention and embrace it with great joy!

A Stewardship Moment Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

A profound stewardship prayer is offered by the young King Solomon in today’s first reading. He asks the Lord to give him an understanding heart, compassion towards God’s people and the insight to distinguish right from wrong. An understanding heart, or wisdom, is a gift from God. It is a gift that enables us to make good decisions and prudent choices. Cultivating and sharing this gift is essential, especially when poor decisions and lack of compassion have consequences that affect the lives of others. During these disquieting times, are we asking God for an understanding heart? Are we exercising good stewardship over the gift of wisdom? Are we sharing our compassionate hearts with others?
