GROWING IN FAITH, HOPE, AND LOVE

Reflecting on the Gospel

Much as it may sound surprising to us, the resurrection of Jesus seemed to be a surprise to his disciples. Mary of Magdala’s first reaction is logical: the body was stolen. Peter and the Beloved Disciple see for themselves that the tomb is empty, but only one believes. They did not understand the Scripture. We are reminded that we live by faith and we seek understanding. Easter morning gives us our north star, the guiding light by which we live our lives. The death of Jesus was not his end. He was raised in a wholly unexpected way to new life. His destiny is ours; his new life will be shared by us who seek to follow him. On this Easter morning, may we be open to the unexpected ways that God may work in our lives. Living Liturgy 2020

Easter Mass

to be shown on KHNL

Hawaii Catholics will be able to watch Bishop Larry Silva preside over Easter Mass during a special television broadcast. The bishop will prerecord the 9 a.m. Easter Sunday liturgy, w h i c h w i l l b e professionally shot and ed i t ed wi th closed captioning, to air on KHNL at noon HST on April 12. “I envision all Catholic churches ringing their bells

at the top of the noon hour as we begin,” said Jayne Ragasa-Mondoy, Diocesan Religious Education Director, who helped arrange for the special broadcast.

The TV Mass is being added since special COVID-19 safety precautions led Bishop Silva to suspend public Masses in Hawaii during the pandemic. Having the Mass on KHNL will allow it to be seen on all islands and in places where only television is available such as in hospitals or care homes. KHNL agreed to air the Easter liturgy for a reduced cost. In addition, the Easter Sunday 9 a.m. Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Honolulu will be livestreamed. We are Easter People!

No matter what we have endured the past few weeks, let us remember that we are an Easter people. The joy of Easter is celebrated not only during the liturgical season we call Easter. It is celebrated every day of the year. The Mass is the Paschal Mystery, and every time it is celebrated, we participate in the sacrifice, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. As St. Paul teaches, we die with Christ and rise with Him in the Holy Spirit. We are transformed into new creations. We are renewed.

Stewards of God’s abundant gifts hold dear the promise of renewal and pledge themselves to the work of reconciliation, healing and proclamation of the Risen Lord no matter what the cost is to themselves. For Christian stewards, each day is a new dawn for living in the light of Christ. There is much about dying and rising with Christ that we do not know; much about the Paschal Mystery we do not understand. But stewards of God’s love are always open to learning more; to being called out of their fears and anxieties and into the light of faith which comes with an ever-deeper understanding of its peace and joy. Easter is a good time to reflect on how we can rise above tensions and troubles and experience the joy of Christ’s peace. It is also a time to ask ourselves how we can experience the gift of Easter each day of our lives International Catholic Stewardship Council April e-bulletin
