Conversation sections are found in every unit. These everyday situations and real-life conversations help students develop their conversation skills and use of the language.

Word Power features objects and situations, providing their names. This helps students grow their word bank against the background of these situations.

Storytelling is one of the most effective ways of conveying language through words and phrases, and their placements in sentences. This is achieved through our great stories.

Listening and pointing exercises increase the student’s ability to identify objects and items in their proper environment.

Unraveling and writing words in puzzle form help students to exercise their brains around cryptic exercises. This develops their knowledge of the language and their overall brain power.

Grammar is the building block of every language. Understanding its nuts, bolts, and structure solidify the student’s knowledge of the language and bolster his confidence in its use.

The units in our books contain lesson topics like Grammar, Conversation, Phonics, Word Power, Reading, Comprehension, Useful Expressions, and lots more.

13

Page 14: Elt Catalog Preiss Murphy 2015

iTools:

All Playhouse® books include an audio CD for an additional way to present language. Listening is a natural way of learning to speak a language and all Playhouse books include a range of realistic listening forms, including conversations, vocabulary, broadcasts, and pronunciation in every unit.

The audio CDs provide regular practice for students to imitate and repeat in order to develop a more authentic English accent and to improve understanding of spoken language.

Playhouse iTools is an effective way to support and reinforce

learning English. Every Playhouse book has a smart board

application that is designed to provide hundreds of hours

of stimulating exercises, engaging illustrations, and

audio for beginning, intermediate, and advanced

language learners.

The interactive iTools software works well as a

stand-alone component, or it can be combined

with a variety of instructional methodologies

and blended learning within all language

settings. Students can download apps onto

phones, tablets, or laptops that encourage

extended learning outside of the classroom. It

also provides an opportunity for parents, tutors, and

care-givers to be directly involved and supportive of the

student’s learning process.

Huangdi and Yandi were the common ancestors of the Chinese nation, and Chinese people at home and abroad all call themselves “the descendants of Yandi and Huangdi”. As recorded in legends and ancient books, Huangdi was the first emperor in Chinese history. Yandi was also a legendary ruler. Huangdi and Yandi both lived in the late period of China’s primitive society about 4,000 years ago, and were the leaders of two different tribes living along the Yellow River in present-day Shaanxi Province. Later, they expanded their territories along both sides of the Yellow River to the east. The Yandi had invaded the territory of another tribe. The result was a defeat for the Yandi, who then sought help from the Huangdi tribe and together they defeated their enemy. After the defeat, some people fled to the south, while others were assimilated into the Yandi or Huangdi tribes. The alliance did not last and eventually fighting broke out between them that led to the Huangdi defeating the Yandi, whose members were forced to join the Huangdi and that strengthened the power of the Huangdi tribe. Later, segments of the tribes (Huangdi, Yandi and Jiuli) settled down in the Yellow River valley, where they began to develop China’s ancient culture and eventually formed the foundation of what we know today as the Chinese people.

Case of Pronouns

After and

Nouns and pronouns in English display case according to their function in the sentence.

The different cases are: - subjective or nominative (which means they act as the

subject), - possessive (which means they show possession of

something else), - objective (which means they function as the recipient of

action or are the object of a preposition).

NounsExcept for the possessive forms (usually made by adding an apostrophe and the letter s), nouns do not change form due to case.

Subjective• The cat and I are playing football.• The cat and she are playing football.

Objective• The neighbour shouted at the cat and me. (Not the

cat and I)• The neighbour shouted at the cat and her.

••

Case after linking VerbsAfter a linking verb, we use the subject form of a pronoun.

It was he who left the fridge open! That must be she in that tree over there.

ExceptionIn spoken English however, we use the objective case:

It was him that did it!

Case after except, but, than, or asGrammarian have argued that the words except, but, than and as could be regarded as either conjunctions or prepositions.

• If except, but, than and as are regarded as conjunctions, then the subject form of the following words is used.

No one could be as brave as he. [he is].Frank is still shorter than she. [she is]

• If, on the other hand, we use except, as, than or but as prepositions the object form of the pronoun is used.

My sister is taller than him.

Subjective Objective PossessiveI me mine

you you yours

he him his

she her hers

it it its

we us our

they them theirs

Example:

Example:

Frank’s dogJerry’s shoe

There are no apostrophes with the possessive pronouns.

It is common in spoken English to hear: Me and Carol went to the swimming pool. This is grammatically incorrect because Me stands in the place of the subject so it should be I. We should say Carol and I went to the swimming pool.

• When the pronoun I is compounded with another subject, I is always listed last.

NOTE:

NOTE:

Baldwin didn’t have his boots, so the keeper leant him a pair. (him is the indirect object, so it is in the objective case. It would be incorrect to say he or his.)

Betty’s cat is faster than mine. (mine refers to something that is owned, so it is in the possessive case. It would be incorrect to say me or I.)

Brian’s cat is faster than him. (him is the object, so it is in the objective case. It would be incorrect to say he or his.)

Grammar6

PronounsPronouns, however, do change form when they change case:

DAVID COPPERFIELD

Of all his books, Dickens loved David Copperfield the most and referred to it as his ‘favourite child.’ Many of the events in the novel are parallel to events that occurred in Dickens’s life.

Now a grown man, David Copperfield tells the story of his youth. As a young boy, he lives happily with his mother and his nurse, Peggotty. His father died before he was born. During David’s early childhood, his mother marries the violent Mr. Murdstone, who brings his strict sister, Miss Murdstone, into the house. The Murdstones treat David cruelly, and send him away to school…..

A TALE OF TWO CITIES

Charles Dickens’s masterpiece A Tale of Two Cities is an historical novel that portrays the difficulty of the French peasants leading up to the French Revolution. A Tale of Two Cities is essentially a tale of love, sacrifice, and, most importantly, rebirth. Dr. Manette, Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton, all hopeless men leading terrible lives, make great sacrifices in order to attain true physical, spiritual, and societal resurrection for themselves and the ones they love.

THE PRISONER OF ZENDA

First published in 1894, Anthony Hope’s novel The Prisoner of Zenda has been reworked, rewritten, stolen from, put on film, and made for television countless times. For some reason, Hope’s tale of identical cousins, treachery, and adventure inspired writers and film-makers to come back to the tale again and again. An Englishman on a Ruritarian holiday must pretend to be the king when the rightful monarch, a distant cousin, is drugged and kidnapped.

Setting the action during the 1885 Serbo-Bulgarian War, Shaw has his fun at the expense of the Bulgarian aristocracy -- most especially the dreamy young Raina and her overly heroic fiancé, Sergius. The two lovers play out their amorous relations as if they are characters in a sentimental, romantic opera. But when a Swiss mercenary, Bluntschli, escapes pursuing Bulgarians by slipping through a window that leads into Raina's bedroom, everything turns around. A hotel owner's son, the plain-speaking realist Bluntschli punctures Raina's quixotic pretensions, and we are left to see whether Raina will end up with him or with her Byronic hero, Sergius.

Despite any literary controversy over Dickens' style, most critics agree that Great Expectations is his best book. The novel centers around a poor young man by the name of Pip, who is given the chance to make himself a gentleman by a mysterious benefactor. Great Expectations offers a fascinating view of the differences between classes during the Victorian era, as well as a great sense of comedy and pathos.

PYGMALION

Bernard Shaw’s masterpiece Pygmalion is a romantic comedy in five acts. Shaw’s Eliza Doolittle is just a lowly flower girl on the streets of London when she happens across Henry Higgins and Colonel Pickering, two of the world’s most renowned linguists. With their help, Eliza learns to alter not only her speaking patterns, but her behavior and way of thinking as well. The play carries us through Eliza’s transformation from a guttersnipe, to a lady of esteemed worth.

ALL MY SONS

All My Sons by Arthur Miller is the sad Post-World War II story about the Kellers, a seemingly “All American” family. But the father, Joe Keller, has concealed a great sin. During the war, he allowed his factory to ship faulty airplane cylinders to the U.S. Armed Forces. Because of this, over twenty American pilots died. Now, his son is about to marry the partner's daughter, the affair is revisited, and his lie of a life is unraveled.

Arms and the Man

Arms and the Man is an Anti-romantic Comedy in Three Acts, that will keep the readers smiling even as they ponder Shaw's ironic critique of naive idealism

But life there improves, and Jane stays on as a teacher, though she still longs for love and friendship. At Mr Rochester's house, where she goes to work as a governess, she hopes she might have found them - until she learns the terrible secret of the attic. Great Expectations

THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR

The Government Inspector is a satirical play first published in 1836. It is a comedy of errors that unstintingly portrays human greed and stupidity. The play centers around the officials of a small provincial town in Russia, who have been informed that a dreaded inspector is soon to arrive. They mistakenly assume that the inspector is Khlestakov, an irresponsible, feckless young clerk returning home from St. Petersburg. They were mistaken !!
