Our Lady of the Assumption Mission Statement
We, as faithful followers of Jesus Christ, create, nurture, and maintain a community of love through worship, reconciliation, healing, formation, education and service. Through Word and Eucharist, we seek the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit, embracing the love of our Creator in each thought, word, and action. As humble servants of God, we remain faithful to the teachings of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, waiting in joyful hope for our Lord’s coming.
Weekly Reflection
The divine ledger
Today’s readings and prayers focus on the divine na-ture of forgiveness. The Gospel provides a poignant example when Jesus is invited to dine with Simon the Pharisee. Jesus enters the house and reclines at the table. The sinful woman comes into the house, seeking Jesus, and proceeds to wash, dry, anoint, and kiss Je-sus’ feet. All this is done while Jesus’ back is to her. She has not spoken to him and he has not acknowl-edged her. Her demeanor is humble and contrite. She risks what is left of her self esteem, knowing that she may face ridicule, ejection, or worse, in order to be in Jesus’ presence. Simon the Pharisee’s unkind thoughts provoke Jesus to share the parable of the forgiven debt, after which he says to Simon, “I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven because she has shown great love.” Facing her, he then says, “Your sins are forgiven. Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” This is the very en-counter we pray to experience when we approach Jesus asking for forgiveness. The Responso-rial Psalm gives us the words to use in our approach, “I acknowledge my sin to you, my guilt I cover not.” We are able to do this because we have been reminded of God’s loving nature. He calls us to come to him as Saint Paul shares in his letter to the Galatians. We pray that “we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law.” Jesus’ example shows us that we are to measure one another with the same love that he has shown us. To put the tally sheet aside and waive the reparations require the very best that is with-in us – the divine spark that Je-sus keeps aflame through his most generous love.

Parish News Open to Serve Means Caring for
One Another
The purpose of a community of faith is to advance the spiritual dimension of our human experience.by living the Gospel of Jesus Christ to its fullest potential. The mis-sion statement of Our Lady of the Assumption Church states our belief that as a parish community of disciples we follow Jesus Christ by our commitment to “create, nur-ture, and maintain a community of love through worship, reconciliation, healing, formation, education and service”. Throughout this Year of Mercy, it has been our intent to put into action the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy in many ways. For example, it is a great joy as a parish to send ministers to the sick and homebound, knowing that the gift of the Eucharist and the human touch of our ministers makes an important connection with all they meet. This is a vibrant and active community which is made possible because so many desire to serve. Living our Christian call to care for one another is a great com-mitment and a great joy. Therefore, we want and need more people to use their gifts, given by the Spirit, to serve the community. Recruiting, training, and sustaining all our ministries demands great effort from all our pastoral leaders. The pastoral leaders in our parish need creative, nurturing, and loving collaborators in order to sustain their roles as a community of happy, healthy, and holy minis-ters. As parish priests, deacons, and lay ministers, we are committed to this because we know that we can only be effective if we are closely connected to the Lord, to one another, and the people we serve. It is for this rea-son that Deacon Don Huntley has been asked to assume a part-time position as a Pastoral Associate. In this role as Pastoral Associate, he will participate in the pastoral care of the parish community by his ministry as a deacon and by supporting the work of the other members of the parish pastoral team. As a PA, he will have opportunities to visit the sick, provide pastoral counseling, and perform other pastoral duties appropriate for a deacon. In addi-tion, as a professional educator, he brings unique per-spective to support the spiritual and religious formation of our catechists, adult leaders, adult learners, our youth, and children in our religious formation program and par-ish school. Deacon Don, with his wife Diana, will continue to shepherd the community of those seeking the Sacra-ments through the Rites of Christian Initiation (RCIA) as they done over the years. It is my hope and desire to continue the great tradi-tion of spiritual and pastoral outreach that Our Lady of the Assumption Parish has sustained throughout the years. As we continue to feel the effects of a declining number of priests available to serve in our churches, it is more important that we build up a well-trained and effective community of deacons and lay pastoral ministers who will continue to sustain and nurture the faith-life of our peo-ple,. We are so blessed by those who are generous with their time, talents, and treasure to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to all we meet. May the Lord’s blessings continue to encourage and bless all our efforts to build up the Body of Christ at OLA. We need your gift of service because what you offer im-portant and needed by others.
Blessings and Peace to all, Fr. Leon

Bendiciones y Paz. Padre Leon
