The Epiphany of the Lord

Dear Friends,

This weekend we continue our journey through the Christmas season with the celebration of the Solemnity of

the Epiphany of the Lord. In the Gospel reading from St. Matthew (2:1-12) we hear the wonderful story of the

Magi who, having seen a star in the East, make the perilous journey to worship the newborn King. This child

in a manger is Jesus—King of Kings and Lord of Lords—God’s gift of himself to us and our world.

We soon see that the Magi come not only to receive a gift, they also come, St. Matthew tells us, bringing gifts

of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to this royal child. From their example comes our tradition of gift giving at

Christmas. One of my favorite authors, Sigrid Undset, Swede and fellow convert from Lutheranism to the

Catholic Faith, reminds us of God’s generous gifts and the way we too often misuse them:

And when we give each other Christmas gifts in his name, let us remember that he has given us the sun

and the moon and the stars, and the earth with its forests and mountains and oceans—and all that lives

and moves upon them. He has given us all green things and everything that blossoms and bears fruit—

and all that we quarrel about and all that we have misused—and to save us from our sins, he came down

to earth and gave us himself.

May this final week of the Christmas season be a time when we remember, give thanks for, and share all of

those good gifts God has given--especially the most important gift of himself in the Christ-child.

Blessed 2016,

Fr. Tom

Father Tom Mc Michael Parish Priest

Queridos amigos,

Bendiciones 2016,

Padre Tom
