Dear Friends, Birthdays are a funny thing. When we are children we look forward to them--the cake, the gifts, the candles, adding another year to our age. As we get older--as I get older at least--I don't think a whole lot about birth-days. Often when someone asks me how old I am I have to stop and think. This past Monday many here surprised me with a early surprise birthday celebration. Believe me, it was a re-al surprise! Thank you all for the delicious food, the birthday cake, the cards and gifts, the prayers, and the good wishes. It was a powerful reminder of all the good folks that are part of our St. Mary and St. Anne com-munities. I thank God for the privilege of serving as priest here and getting to know you all. You are indeed a blessing to me and to many. This weekend I am away visiting my parents in Walla Walla and spending a few days floating and fishing the Wallowa and Grande Ronde Rivers in Eastern Oregon with my brothers and nephew. You all will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. May God continue to bless, guide, and renew these gifted and generous communities we are part of at St. Mary and St. Anne. In Christ, Fr. Tom

Queridos amigos,

P. Tom

We are in need of parishioners willing to serve as sponsors for people who are preparing to enter the Catholic Church– we need people to journey with them, pray with/for them, and help them in living life as a Catholic.

Interested in becoming Catholic, or know someone who is? Contact Michael Schmitz at: [email protected] or at 360-653-9400 to get some of your questions answered and find out about the process and how we can make that happen!

Adult Formation and Discipleship Updates!

Learning the Liturgy

(This is going to be a new feature in our bulletin. If you have a question about the liturgy, please send it to Michael at [email protected] or drop it off at the front office!)

Q. Why do people genuflect (kneel on one knee) when they enter the pews?

A. There are a few traditional ways of physically showing honor or reverence in Roman Catholic tradi-tion. Sometimes we bow (either a simple bow of the head, or a profound bow), and other times we genuflect. Genuflecting (literally means “bending the knee” in Latin) is how we traditionally show respect and wor-ship to Christ present in the Eucharist in the tabernacle. Many people simply genuflect out of habit– but one should note that if you visit a church where the taber-nacle is not visible (or if you come to church on a day when the tabernacle is empty), you would bow to the altar. Notice the difference in treatment between a symbol of Christ (the altar) and Christ’s Real Presence in the Eucharist! Note also how it is important to be intentional in these acts– it shouldn’t be something we do without thinking. Perhaps when you enter the pew, you can say a prayer to Christ: “I adore You, Jesus, pre-sent in the Blessed Sacrament!”
