Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt

• Re/Ra- God of the Sun• Amon- God of the Sky• Amon-Re – King of the Gods, father

of the Pharaohs • Anubis- Protector of the Dead• Osiris, Isis, and Horus- Trio Gods of

the Afterlife • Hathor- Cow-headed God of Love

Gods and Goddesses Cont.

• Ra was the sun god. He was the most important god of the ancient Egyptians.

• The ancient Egyptians believed that Ra was swallowed every night by the sky goddess Nut, and was reborn every morning.

• Why did they believe this?

God of the Sky- Amun

• Amun was important throughout the history of ancient Egypt. However, when Amun was combined with the sun god Ra he was even more powerful. He was then called Amun-Ra.

• Most powerful God in Ancient Egypt

Anubis-Protector of the Dead

• Man with a jackal head • Since jackals were often seen in

cemeteries, the ancient Egyptians believed that Anubis watched over the dead.

Osiris, Isis, and Horus

• Horus- Far right, son of Iris and Osiris - Isis- Wife of Osiris, and mother of Horus- Osiris- brother and husband of Iris

- These three weighed your soul in the afterlife

Osiris’ Story

• The King and Judge of the dead after he had been killed by Seth and restored to life by Isis. Often looked like a green faced mummy.

• Isis was the sister and wife of Osiris who restored Osiris after Seth killed him and spread him all over Egypt in little pieces.

• Horus, son of Isis and Osiris, who was thought to be the Pharaoh in human form

• Horus was also thought to be the protector of Egypt.

Other Gods in Ancient Egypt

• Gods and Goddesses • Some of these Gods were more

powerful and popular in every day Egyptian life

• Not all time periods during the Ancient Egyptian civilization worshipped the same Gods and Goddesses

Temples and Religious Tombs

• Priests would perform daily rituals to statues that represented Nobility that was buried within the tomb

• Temples were often very decorated and elaborate on the exterior

• Obelisks- tall, decorative pillars on the outside of temples that represented the life of the person buried inside.
