We must always think about things, and we must think about things as they are, not as they are said to be.

Remember – Its all about perceptions…

My fishbowl

is the greate

What he sees….

Page 4: Effective feedback

What we see….

…perceptions…

Page 5: Effective feedback

It is all invented“

Everything you know, or

think you know, is built upon a

network of hidden assumptions or

prejudice already within you.

We need to break through

this box of assumptions and

envision things as they really are,

or can be.

Lazy!

Page 6: Effective feedback

Try to become emotionally detached from your feedback. It needs to be objective and specific.

When we judge or criticize another person, it says nothing about that person; it merely says something about our own need to be critical.

Effective feedback is

important in helping people

develop.

Tell them how their performance or behavior impacted you…

Page 8: Effective feedback

Be Specific

When?How?Why?

Page 9: Effective feedback

General

Don’t be general in your feedback statements.

I think your attitude sucks…

General Statement

Page 10: Effective feedback

Your statement during the meeting at 1 made me feel

belittled because...

I thought you showed great interest when discussing the next

quarter goals during our last meeting because…

During that sales call I thought you showed great charisma by

doing…

Describe behaviors or actions and frame in specifics…

Page 11: Effective feedback

Judge actions, not individuals.

“You are abrasive and arrogant.”

Your feedback

“Who do you think you are calling me arrogant?!?”

What they are thinking…

Where this feedback leads

is useless…

Page 12: Effective feedback

Effective feedback is best done sooner rather than later & never goes on too long.

Page 13: Effective feedback

Good!

Bad!

Good!

The feedback sandwich only serves to muddle communication.

Give them credit and give the effective feedback will all beef and no bun!

Page 14: Effective feedback

Avoid Traps or threats disguised as feedback.

Page 15: Effective feedback

Don’t psychoanalyze or give advice unless asked.

You don’t have a degree in psychology, so don’t pretend you are a psychologist!

Page 16: Effective feedback

Only speak for Yourself.

Questions to ask yourself before giving feedback…

? Why did I notice this behavior & what does it say about me?

What non-verbal feedback am I giving?

What tone of voice would I like to be talked to when receiving feedback?
