MESSAGE THE MAR THOMA PARISH PERTH PARISH MESSENGER Volume 77 / March 2015 SELF –DENIAL “A woman [or man] looking at herself [or himself] a mirror and adorning herself [himself] does not feel the shame of reducing the self, that infinite being which surveys all things, to a small space. In the same way, every time that we raise the ego….as high as we raise it, we degrade ourselves to an infinite degree by confining ourselves to being no more than that. “A very beautiful woman who looks at her reflection in the mirror can very well believe that she is that. An ugly woman knows that she is not that” (Weil, 1987) How do we know who we are? Weil’s words tell us that we cannot leave our identity up to ourselves or other human beings. When we do, we end up limiting ourselves. We usually recognise this when we are seen in a bad light. Like the “ugly woman” we know we are more than some negative surface view of ourselves. We resist being limited by the negative judgments some person or group has for us. A greater danger to our identity is when we like what we see, we raise our ego because of our own accomplishments, our group identity, or our material possessions. Ironically, when we base our identity on these superficial things we end up degrading ourselves. W e h a v e r e d u c e d ourselves to being only these things. We become like the “beautiful woman” who believes her reflection tells her everything there is to know about herself. Weil shows us the way to discover our true identity a n d a v o i d a l l superficial limitations. This way is self-denial, submitting ourselves to God, confessing we are nothing apart from God. When we do this we refuse to be the authors of our own identity. God, our original creator, establishes who we are. N o t h i n g e l s e , n o t ourselves, not the group or the state, not our wealth tells us our identity. Self – denial means we become what God has meant us to be. We are no longer apart from God, resisting God and God’s way. We also do not see our neighbours as competition, someone we need to outdo or protect ourselves against. Humble self-denial means the restoration of our relationship with God and neighbour. May our good God bless you all. “ A w o m a n [ o r m a n ] looking at herself [or himself] a mirror and adorning herself [himself] does not feel the shame of reducing the self, that i n fi n i t e b e i n g w h i c h surveys all things, to a small space. “A very beautiful woman who looks at her reflection in the mirror can very well believe that she is that. An ugly woman knows that she is not that” (Weil, 1987)

How do we know who we are? Weil’s words tell us that we cannot leave our identity up to ourselves or o ther human beings. When we do, we end up limiting ourselves. We usually recognise this when we are seen in a

bad light. Like the “ugly woman” we know we are more than some negative surface view of ourselves. We resist being limited by the negative judgments some person or group has for us.A greater danger to our identity is when we like what we see, we raise our ego because of our own accomplishments, our group identity, or our material possessions. Ironically, when we base our identity on these superficial things we end up degrading ourselves. W e h a v e r e d u c e d ourselves to being only these things. We become l i k e t h e “ b e a u t i f u l woman” who bel ieves her reflection tells her everything there is to know about herself.Weil shows us the way to discover our true identity a n d a v o i d a l l superficial limitations. This w a y i s s e l f - d e n i a l ,

submitting ourselves to God, confessing we are nothing apart from God. When we do this we refuse to be the authors of our own identity. God, our o r i g i n a l c r e a t o r , establishes who we are. N o t h i n g e l s e , n o t ourselves, not the group or the state, not our wealth tells us our identity.Self – denial means we become what God has meant us to be. We are no longer apart from God, resisting God and God’s way. We also do not see o u r n e i g h b o u r s a s competition, someone we need to outdo or protect

ourselves against. Humble self-denial m e a n s t h e restoration of our relationship with G o d a n d neighbour.

May our good God bless you all.
