Were I a preacher, I should, above all other things,

preach the practice of the presence of God; and were

I a director, I should advise all the world to do it,

so necessary do I think it, and so easy,

too (Symons 1941)

We are always in the presence of God

because he is present everywhere. He is

present when we hear his Word proclaimed,

walk in the woods, or sit at the table. But we

can also enter in communion with God or,

as Brother Lawrence would put it, into the

presence of God.

Brother Lawrence would not deny that we

are helped to enter into the presence of

God through hearing the Word. His whole

life was grounded in acts of devotion. In the

innocence and purity of his heart, however,

he went beyond prescribed prayers. He

entered into the presence of God by means

of habitual, silent, and secret conversation

with God.

Such communion can take place becausewe have within us a space for spiritual

growth. It is at the very core of our being.

Through Holy Baptism the Holy Spirit has

come to dwell there. The reality of the

Spirits presence takes hold of us when

through prayer we center on God within us

and enter into communion with Him.But how shall this be done? Brother

Lawrence wrote that two childlike qualities

prompted Jesus to pray, I thank thee,

Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou

hast hidden these things from the wise and

understanding and revealed them to

babes (Matt 11:25). The first quality was

humility- he surrendered his body, soul, and

mind to god. The second was the boldness

which made it possible to step into the

presence of God and converse with Him.

The childs instinct is correct. The Father is

ready to embrace us.

To thee, O Lord, do I lift my soul. O my

God, in thee I trustCast me not away

from thy presence, take not thy Holy Spirit

from me (Pss 25:1-2; 51:11)
