You can pass this! The main thing for you to improve is the structure for C questions. See the next example.

Explain why some Christians follow only their conscience when making moral decisions. (8 Marks)

DO NOW …

Firstly, Christians only follow their conscience because they believe it is more important than anything else. For example, they believe it is the voice of God guiding them to make good decisions. This means they trust their conscience above other sources of guidance.

Secondly, Christians believe other guidance is complicated. For example, the Bible was written a long time ago and needs interpretation. This means a person’s conscience is more direct and less complicated.

PAY IT FORWARD = an obligation to do three good deeds for others in response to a good

deed that one receives. Such good deeds should accomplish things that the other person

cannot accomplish on their own. In this way, the practice of helping one another can spread

geometrically through society, at a ratio of three to one, creating a social movement with an impact of making the world a better place.

Could this idea work in reality?

What, if any, are the issues with this idea of ‘paying it forward’?

Would this make the world a better place?

What Christian teachings does this idea link to and why?

Page 6: Edexcel GCSE RS Christian Teachings Moral Duties & Responsibilities

should especially help those in need.

The Parable of the Sheep and the GoatsRead through the Parable of the Sheep

and the Goats on the worksheet provided and answer the questions.

1. How does the Parable show Christians their moral duty?

2. How might it affect the way a Christian would vote and participate in politics?

3. What would a Christian say to a government who wanted to cut benefits for the jobless?

What is the moral of this parable? • Christians will be judged on their

actions• In helping others they are serving

Jesus• There is a reward for helping

others• There is a punishment for not

helping others. How can this be linked to Christian

moral duties and responsibilities? They must show care for those in need; the hungry, thirsty, lonely,

naked, sick and prisoners.

St John

• ‘We should love one another. Do not be like Cain who…murdered his brother…Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous…Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him…If anyone had material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.’

1 John 3:11-18

What is the meaning of this passage? St Paul used the example of Cain and Abel to

warn Christians that they have moral duty to actively care for others.

How can this be linked to Christian moral duties and responsibilities?

Christians should not stand by and do nothing while others suffer. They should

get involved in helping those in need through charity work, fund raising, raising

awareness, volunteering etc.
