Execuve Director’s Message

2012 Board of Directors:

Ron Saito, President Michelle Marn, VP Tim Sco, Treasurer Steve Cogan, Secretary

Beth Barnes Bob Sjolin (May-Dec) Karen English (May-Dec) Vanna Boghossian (May-Dec)

Maria Glidden Lisa Last (May-Dec) Bhanu Kholi (May-Dec) Trivéa Isaacs (Sept-Dec)

Dave Pra (Jan-May) Rick Carew (Jan-May) Rakesh Gupta (Jan-May)

When asked to write a message to our donors, one of our clients wrote “without sup-

port, hunger grows”. I have come to realize that truth on a number of levels. Without

the food assistance the food bank provides to its clients, more people would be hungry.

Without the support of our many food and financial donors, the food bank would not

have the resources to respond and hunger would, in fact, increase in our community.

This past year, we purchased a dock-level, refrigerated truck with funds from the Homelessness Partnering Strategy.

This second vehicle makes it possible to pick-up larger, skid-size donaons such as donaons of fresh produce.

2012 was a year of re-examining how the food bank can beer provide the support hungry families need. We serve

the immediate needs of hungry families through food distribuon, but that is only meant as a short –term soluon.

Our advocacy services give clients the help they need to address some of the root causes of hunger. In 2012, we made

the commitment to build the Community Learning Kitchen as part of a more long-term sustainable approach to hun-

ger in our community. The Community Learning Kitchen will provide cooking classes for our clients, employment

training, meal producon for distribuon to our clients and to the community and be available for community groups

to use with their clients.

With your connued support, we are taking a bite out of hunger!

If you want to see the face of hunger in our community, look in the mirror.

That message came through loud and clear from two Eden Community Food Bank clients who spoke at the charity's Hunger

Awareness Breakfast this morning at Eden United Church in Meadowvale.

Brian Booth lived in a beauful house with his kids, had a job that paid well, and a car. Then he got sick and lost it all in 2011.

"My family and (the food bank) helped me survive," said Booth.

He's back on his feet now, and credits the food bank with helping him get there.

"Rent and phone costs leE me with $49 a month to live on," said Booth, 57. "That's $1.25 a day. At the lowest point in my

life, Eden Community Food Bank helped me survive and made me feel like a million dollars."

Karen Sabo put off going to the food bank because she always figured others needed it more.

Then came the day the single mother realized she couldn't feed her kids.

"I desperately needed Eden Community Food Bank over the three years I was at school geKng my nursing degree," said the

39-year-old Meadowvale resident. "My family and the food bank were never judgmental and always supporve."

The Hunger Awareness Breakfast is an annual event during Naonal Hunger Awareness Week, which this year runs May 6-10.

The goal is to make everyone aware that hunger isn't a third world condion — it's right here in our communies.

Eden Community Food Bank has two locaons – one in Meadowvale and

the other in Erin Mills. They feed 400-500 families every month. That means

feeding about 1,250 people, half of them children.

Breakfast Raises Awareness about Hunger

Page 5: eden community food bank - EDEN FOOD FOR CHANGE · eden community food bank Annual Report 2012 A food bank and more... is a non-denominational, charitable organization, working to

Bill Crawford, the food bank's execuve director, says they collected more

than 400,000 pounds of food valued at more than $1 million last year.

Crawford said there shouldn't be a sgma about going to a food bank when

kids are hungry.

"Clients say they love Eden Community Food Bank because people there

look them in the eye," said Crawford. "This (breakfast) is the only opportuni-

ty in the year for donors and clients to meet and truly understand that."

At the breakfast, the food bank recognized companies, organizaons and

students who work to feed the hungry.

Among those honoured was Erindale Secondary School student Erica Merryweather, who collected 610 pounds of food

for the food bank.

Long-me employees of the Mississauga office of McCormick Canada, Angela Landreth and Sandra Kranics, were at the

breakfast to announce that in addion to the $21,405.86 donated by their employer and fellow employees last year, the

company will donate $5,000 each year for three years.

In addion, they'll supply the Community Learning Kitchen the food bank is building at its Unity Dr. locaon with spices.

McCormick Canada manufactures brand name food products such as spices and honey.

Crawford says the kitchen, when completed this September, will allow them to teach clients how to cook nutrious

meals, as well as provide training for those looking to work in the food industry. It will also be used to prepare meals for

clients, and will be available to other community organizaons.

Locations ECFB serves hungry individuals and families in

four postal code areas in western Mississauga.

We have been serving L5N and L5M, covering the

Meadowvale and Streetsville neighbourhoods,

for almost 25 years. Our original locaon, the

Baleford Client Centre, is located in the base-

ment of Eden United Church on the corner of

Winston Churchill Blvd and Baleford Rd.

Our second and now primary locaon, the Unity

Client Centre, warehouse, Community Learning

Kitchen and office, is on Unity Drive off of Win-

ston Churchill Blvd just south of Highway 403. We

serve families in the L5L and L5K areas out of this

locaon.

Clients In 2012, ECFB provided food assistance to over

400 families every month or an average of 1,250

individuals 42% of whom were children.

On average, our clients spend 75% of their income

on rent & ulies. Too many of our clients have to

chose between a roof over their heads or food for

their family because they can’t afford both.

Emergency Food Relief & Advocacy Services are the founda-onal programs of the food bank responding to the immediate need

of hungry people by providing food and other assistance. ECFB oper-

ates six shiEs a week out of two locaons. Advocacy helps people take

steps toward economic and social recovery by providing informaon

and referrals including health care, nutrion,

social services, employment and selement.

The Food Delivery Program ensures that hun-

gry people with issues geKng to the food bank

or bringing their food home sll receive the

food they need for their families.

Community Learning Kitchen is an inia-

ve in development. We began raising funds

for the kitchen in 2011, started building the kitchen in 2012 and anci-

pate programs beginning in September 2013. The Community Learn-

ing Kitchen will provide cooking classes to teach our clients how to

cook foods available at the food bank, train unemployed people by

giving them the skills to work in the food industry, produce prepared

meals for distribuon to our clients and others, and provide a kitchen

space for other community groups to be able to provide food /kitchen

programming for their clients.

fast and presentaons to schools and community groups help to raise

awareness of poverty and hunger in our community and encourage

people to acon. Employee engagement opportunies and organizing

groups to help out in the food bank give people a

first-hand experience of the food bank.

Outreach In partnership with The Mississauga

Food Bank, ECFB reaches out to the community to

help potenal clients find out or learn more about

the food bank. This is currently a growth area for us

as we connue to invesgate how best to reach out

to potenal clients in the community.

Admin / Fundraising are support services to help us accomplish

our mission. Proper record keeping and donor communicaon are

crucial to accomplishing our goals.

Events like the popular Toonie Tuesday which runs in many local

schools on the third Tuesday in November helps students make a

difference in the community. Fundraising events in schools and work-

places help to raise much-needed funds to support our programs. Our

own fundraising events, like Riders Against Hunger and Monte Carlo

Night help us to engage our supporters and increase our visibility.

Eden Community Food Bank’s food collecon goal in 2012 was 400,000 pounds of food. We re-

ceived 401,738 pounds of food from the community through the year (and purchased an addi-

onal 21,969 pounds). Thank you for helping us reach our goal! The dollar value of the food re-

ceived was $1,059,265! We collect food all through the year, but receive about 22% in Decem-

ber, and 43% during the months of October, November and December combined.

ECFB distributed 409,028 pounds of food to hungry families in our community in 2012. On aver-

age, over 34,000 pounds was given out by the food bank each month to feed disadvantaged

adults and children in our community. 100% of our food was distributed locally. The dollar value

of the food distributed to the community was $1,024,377.

Each person received an average of 26 pounds of food per visit—up by 3.5 pounds from last

year. A family of four received about 100 pounds of food meant to provide healthy, nutrious

meals for seven to ten days.

More Fresh Produce

In our efforts to provide more fresh produce to our clients throughout the year,

we have made a connecon with the Ontario Food Terminal. Towards the end of

2012, we received 9,200 pounds of donated food from OFT vendors.

We also purchased needed produce for below wholesale

prices. Our goal is to receive an average of 1,500

pounds of donated food each week through 2013.

Donaons from local farmers from the Square

One Farmers Market connues to be an im-

portance source of fresh produce during the

summer and fall.

Financials

For every $1 spent to operate the food bank in 2012, $2.50 worth of food was distributed to

hungry families in the community.

Our fiscal year follows the calendar year—January 1st to December 31st. Our

revenue was $487,364 in 2012. Our expenses were $410,968. The surplus of

$76,396 was funds raised for the Kitchen Build. This surplus was brought for-

ward to 2013 to cover the expenses of the construcon of the Community

Learning Kitchen which took place primarily in the first quarter of 2013.

Donations from a variety of sources and a number of fundraising events made it possible to fully fund our programs in 2012!
