Not having stayed in Hong Kong for 180 days means that he is not eligible for social welfare assistance. Having three square meals a day has become a problem. What is even more difficult to deal with are his son’s medical fees and living expenses. Mr Wu said, “Some people in the mainland offered me $50,000 to buy my son, but I really, really want to look after himand bring himup myself.” The thought of committing suicide has crossed Mr Wu’s mind before, but he has given up on the idea because there would then be no one left to look after his son. Mr Wu said, “I can tighten my belt and continue to live, but there is no way I can cut down on expenses on milk powder and diapers.” “The food you’ve brought me has already lightened my burden. Mr Won became unemployed a year or so ago and is now receiving $700 of old age allowance per month. His wife is a manual worker earning a salary of $4,000-odd. This family of three relies on this $5,000-odd for a living. According to Mr Won, his friends have suggested that he should apply to the Social Welfare Department for social welfare assistance. After the deduction of rent from the $5,000-odd, not much money remains. How does a family of three keep itself fed? Mr Won says that his wife would occasionally go back to their hometown during festivals. His mother-in-law would give them homemade soya paste. His wife would also purchase boxes of vermicelli and bring them home. He points out that a box of vermicelli only costs $20-odd and can be eaten as breakfast. This saves quite a lot of money. “Very often, I would cook rice and add some soya paste to it. As income is limited, food expenses have to be cut down.” Mr Won saw that his food included rice, biscuits, raw noodles, food oil, soya sauce, canned food, etc. and said smilingly, “With these foodstuffs, I won’t need to mix rice with soya sauce anymore.” We have no choice but to cut down on food xpenses.”

Activity ReportJointly Build “Canned-Food Christmas Tree”with a Kind HeartOperation Santa Claus 2005

As the festive Christmas season approaches,

have you ever thought of performing charitable

acts while doing your Christmas shopping?

Operation Santa Claus is an annual fundraising

activity organised jointly by the English channel

of Radio Television Hong Kong and the South China Morning Post. In December each year, it collects donations for organisations

in need, arousing people’s interest in participating in it. This year’s Operation Santa Claus made generous contributions to our

canned food drives. In November, a Christmas tree made up of 64,000-odd cans and 4 metres in height was also built for the first

time. This added meaning to this year’s Christmas. Its objective was to offer assistance to poor children, street sleepers,

low-income individuals, newly-arrived immigrants as well as people living in poor domestic conditions. Between 23 and

26 November, 10-odd volunteers pieced together a “canned-food Christmas tree” on the grassy field off the International Finance

Centre (Phase 2) in Central. On the one hand, this plan aimed at enabling people to understand poverty relief work in Hong Kong.

On the other, it instilled in students and parents the spirit of helping oneself and others. This activity became increasingly

successful, thanks to sponsorship from the business sector. We even have to thank nearly 20 companies and organisations for their

loving donation and enthusiastic support. This activity succeeded in collecting over 64,000 cans of food. It is envisaged that this

will be sufficient for providing 300 poor individuals with six months of food. Here, the People’s Food Bank expresses its heartfelt

thanks to the overwhelming support of various schools and hopes that even more companies and schools can take part in its food

drives and poverty relief activities. Here, we express our wholehearted thanks to the benefactors!

Different Sectors Show They CareEver since its establishment, the People’s Food Bank has been fortunate enough to enjoy the wholehearted

support of Hong Kong Storage. In this edition, we specially interviewed the Vice President of

Hong Kong Storage, Mr. Louis Chung so as to understand what causes the company to participate in

social welfare services. As early as 02-03, Mr. Louis Chungwas already in contact with St James’

Settlement and heard of the establishment of the People’s Food Bank later on. He was very surprised to

learn that there were still so many people who did not have enough to fill their stomachs in today’s society.

That was why he decided to do all he could to help the poor in need.

Mr. LouisChung said, “I hope that, first, each person will have enough to eat. Only after that can they have other

hopes.”HongKong Storage is not simply concerned with the plight of poor families but also throws its weight behind social welfare bodies, helping to organize

publicity work of poverty relief efforts, e.g. working with TVB to shoot special programmes. This is to enable poor families to stand on their own two feet and be

rid of poverty. “It’s a very happy feeling to be able to help others out.”

For this reason, both Mr. Louis Chung and his elder brother make substantial financial contribution to our service and provide us with professional opinion. Mr.

Chung also has problems when trying to offer assistance. The usual problem concerns timetable clashes. However, knowing that the People’s Food Bank is

helping the needy to solve their food problem, he thinks that all the hard work is well worth it. At this stage, Mr Chung will introduce the services of the food bank

to other people in the hope that we can obtain help from other sources. Apart from materials or financial sponsorship, Mr Chung goes one step further and

encourages his staff to take part in organizing fundraising activities themselves. He is all for the company showing its concern for its staff, who can then strike an

even better balance between family life and job responsibility. This can enhance the quality of family life. Staff members do not just see themselves as citizens of

the enterprise but also feel it has a human touch and a healthy corporate image. They can even share their experiences of helping others with their families and put

something back into society! Here, the People’s Food Bank thanks Mr. Louis Chung profusely for accepting to be interviewed by our centre!

Number of beneficiaries since 1 January 2004: 6,458 person
