    Definition

Creativity is the ability to improve, where by

    through improvement value is added.

Creativity (or creativeness) is a mental

process involving the generation of new ideas

or concepts, or new associations between

    existing ideas or concepts

Creativity is a lifestyle , a way of living, a way

    of perceiving the world.

    INNOVATION AND THE

ENTREPRENEUR Innovation is the key function in the

    entrepreneurial process

Innovation is the process by which

    entrepreneurs convert opportunitiesinto marketable ideas.

    ROLE OF CREATIVITY

Creativity is the generation of ideasthat result in the improved efficiencyor effectiveness of a system.

Two important aspects of creativityare process and people.

    Process is goal oriented.

People are the resources thatdetermine the solution.

    Investment Theory of Creativity

Asserts that creative thinkers are like good investors: They

    buy low and sell high.

Creative people generate ideas that are like undervalued

stocks, and are generally rejected by the public.

When creative ideas are proposed, they are often viewedas bizarre, useless, and even foolish, and are summarily

    rejected

From the investment view, then, the creative person buys

low by presenting a unique idea and attempts to convince

other people of its value. After convincing others that theidea is worthy, which increases the perceived value of the

investment, the creative person sells high by leaving the

idea to others and moving to another idea.

    TWO APPROACHES TO CREATIVE

    PROBLEM SOLVING

    Employs a disciplined, precise,methodical approach.

Is concerned with solving, ratherthan finding problems.

    Attempts to refine currentpractices.

    Tends to be means oriented.

    Is capable of extended detailwork.

Is sensitive to group cohesionand cooperation.

    Approaches tasks from unusualangles.

    Discovers problems and avenues ofsolutions.

Questions basic assumptionsrelated to current practices.

Has little regard for means,is moreinterested in ends.

    Has little tolerance for routinework.

Has little or no need forconsensus, often is insensitive toothers.

    NATURE OF CREATIVE PROCESS

Creativity is a process that can bedeveloped and improved.

Everyone is creative to some degree.

Creativity is not some mysterioustalent reserved for few.

Barriers to creative thinking aresometimes the inadvertent killer

    phrases.

    SOME IDEA STOPPERS

Naah Thats the dumbest thing I have

    ever heard.

We have done all right so far whydo we need that?

    That doesnt sound practical.

Lets get back to reality. Where do you get these weird

    ideas

    Loss of Creativity

We routinely witness creativity in youngchildren, but it is hard to find in older childrenand adults

Their creative potential has been suppressedby a society that encourages intellectualconformity.

We begin to suppress children's naturalcreativity when we expect them to colorwithin the lines in their coloring books.

Perhaps the most famous example of using an

imaginative and even "crazy" perspective is that

of Einstein visualizing himself riding a beam of

light. That helped him create his theory ofrelativity. It's a great demonstration of how to

develop creativity by using simple but powerful

    creative problem solving techniques.

    Rate of adoption

    of a new idea

    1. Relative Advantage - is it better?

    2. Compatibility - is it appropriate?

    3. Complexity - is it understandable? 4. Trialability - can it be tested?

    5. Observability - what does it look like?

Most innovations result from a conscious, purposeful search for new opportunities.

Successful innovators use both left and right

sides of the brain. Most successful innovations are simple and

    focused.
