2001 Harvard Study*1,458,000 personal bankruptcies in 2001, according to a study published by the journal

*Over 75% had health insurance at onset of illness

*38 percent had lost coverage at least temporarily by the time they filed for bankruptcy.

*Families in bankruptcy suffered privations -- 30% had a utility cut off *61% went without needed medical care.

*Uncovered medical bills averaged $13,460 for those with private insurance at start of illness.

*People with cancer had average medical debts of $35,878.

2009 Harvard Study Revisited:*Medical bankruptcies declared increase to 62 percent in 2007 (that is up 50% from 2001 data)

*Over 78% of those who filed for bankruptcy were middle-class, well-educated homeowners

*Why bankrupt if medically insured? Because of gaps in coverage like co-payments and deductibles and uncovered services,

*On average, medically bankrupt families had $17,943 in out-of-pocket expenses,

*If you lacked insurance at onset of illness, then average goes to $26,971

*Since 2003, over 1.5 million U.S. bankruptcies per year are caused by medical bills --2 million in 2005.
