Introductionthe european conference on mobility management was founded as the fi nal conference of the MOMENTUM research project – in Amsterdam 1997. In Amsterdam it was decided to develop it into a series and the next host was Nottingham in the UK in 1998. At that stage, it became obvious that there was a necessity to have platform to provide some continuity. In 1999, EPOMM was born, fi rst as a European project. When the EU-support ceased, it had to be developed into an international association, which was fi nally registered in 2006 in Brussels.

all through this time, EPOMM provided for the continuity of the ECOMM series. Th e ECOMM has now become THE meeting place for Mobility Management practitioners and experts all over Europe, with over 300 delegates. Papers are selected by the International Programme Committee (IPC), whilst the programme is developed in cooperation with EPOMM. EPOMM takes care that ECOMM maintains its agreeable size, its attractive fee structure and high quality, but also strives for continuous development.

the objective of ECOMM is to disseminate, increase and exchange the knowledge about mobility management in Europe and beyond and to enhance the networking within the mobility management community. Th e conference is a chance to get in touch with experts and policy makers. Each ECOMM has its own theme and contributes to a growing expertise in mobility management and the ways in which it can be successfully applied in diff erent contexts.

Welcome to Gävle and the ECOMM 2013 conferencehow do you get to work or school? Can we take active measures that aff ect people´s travel patterns and make them more sustainable? In Gävle we think this is possible! We have to explore and test sustainable solutions. We need to have the courage to try new techniques and to plan for sustainable transport in our cities. Above all, we must change attitudes and behavior across the generations.

We believe in sustainable travel.Welcome to Gävle! Come and be part of the process!

THEME for ECOMM in Gävle 2013

Smart choices require easy access –making sustainable transport

a part of every day life

The 2011 European Mobility Week in Gävle began by clearly showing just how much space diff erent means of transpiration take up in the city’s physical environment. If more people choose to carpool or choose smart alternatives like the bus or bicycle, both our environment, our health and our wallets will benefi t.

the entire trip, from door to door is an important issue for Gävle, our region and all of Sweden. Th e ability to travel comfortably and quickly, yet in an environmentally friendly way is important to travelers. In the Gävle area, this is an especially important issue

because many of the inhabitants live in rural areas and/or commute long distances to cities in the region. City buses, commuter parking, bikes on the train, and other transportation solutions are essential to a well functioning weekday.

This is Gävlegävle’s location by the Baltic sea has always had great signifi cance for the city’s inhabitants and its economy.

the sea is still of importance today, for example with the creation of Gävle Strand, which is a unique residential neighbourhood by the mouth of Gävleån (the Gävle River) that is only a few minutes from Gävle’s Central Station and the main city square. Th e beautiful gasklockor (Gävle’s historic gas storage facility) can be found on the other side of the river, and is an ideal venue for meetings and events. our intimacy and love of the sea is evident in many places around Gävle; in the historic fi shing village of Bönan with its café and fi sh smokeries, by the Furuvik Park restaurant and by Axmar Bruk (Axmar mill) you fi nd yourself really close to the water. Th ere are also interesting ongoing projects around the Testebo River and Norrlandet to provide even more opportunities to live by and enjoy water.

gävle invests in a rich variety of cultural and recreational activities. A professional symphony orchestra is based at the Gävle Concert Hall, where music from all corners of the world can also be heard. Th e city’s biggest celebrity, the Gävle Christmas goat, is built before the fi rst Sunday of Advent every year in Slottstorget (the Castle Square). Th ere are three elite teams in the Gävle area we are particularly proud of: Swedish ice hockey champions Brynäs, Gefl e IF football and Sandviken’s AIK Bandy.

close proximity to Arlanda International Airport, the Port of Gävle, the E4 and E16 highways, and railways makes Gävle a comprehensive logistical hub.

the surrounding region also has a great deal to off er. Long sandy beaches in Rullsand, the Kungsberget Ski Resort, Wij Trädgårdar (Wij Gardens), and fi shing in the Dalälven, Gysinge and Älvkarleby attract many visitors to the area.

EXCURSIONS

A.City tour by foot

(Wednesday and Friday)

we walk around central Gävle and examine various sites from the perspective of Mobility Management and Gavle’s development. We will discuss the Jane’s Walk method and hear the ideas that emerged during the Jane’s Walk in Gävle in the fi rst weekend of May.

Gävle is an old industrial centre, which amongst other things is today associated with the coff ee roaster Gevalia (Gävle’s Latin name). We make a stop in Gavle’s old town with its well-preserved historic houses and drink coff ee in a small café.

www.janeswalk.net

B.Cycling tour

(Wednesday and Friday)

experience our attractive cycling city. The bicycle tour will run through Gavle’s neighborhoods. We will cycle through the city’s popular parks, pass historic buildings and a new residential area by the old harbor, where we will stop, enjoy a coff ee and discuss Mobility Management issues. Gävle was appointed Sweden’s Cycling City in 1997 and has 220 km of cycle paths.

C.Bus tour and visit to the Mackmyra Whisky Village

(Wednesday and Friday)

we travel through gävle and show various solutions and issues concerning Mobility Management. During the bus tour we will look at new development areas, commuter parking, separate bus lanes and a biogas fi lling station.

Mackmyra’s new gravitation distillery is situated just outsida Gävle. Visitors will see and smell how Swedish whisky is produced in an environmentally sustainable manner. The whisky village has everything to make whisky; a distillery, warehouse, smokehouse and a malthouse. We will have a coff ee break at the Mackmyra Whisky village.

EXCURSIONS

D.Visit the Swedish Railway Museum

By bus from the Conference Centre (Wednesday and Friday)

gävle boasts one of the fi nest historical railway collections in the world.

Sweden´s Railway Museum in Gävle has a unique collection of locomotives, carriages and other items related to over 150 years of railway history. The visit will begin with a presentation of the work to make the area around Gävle’s Central Station more attractive. Gävle is part of a national project to promote rail travel, which includes investments that facilitate access for disabled people, pedestrians and cyclists. We will have a coff ee break at the museum.

Note that the Wednesday visit departs from the Gävle Central Station.

www.trafi kverket.se/Museer/Sveriges-Jarnvagsmuseum-Gavle/In-English---Gavle/Swedish-Railway-Museum

bönan is a historic fi shing village, 12 km outside Gävle. During the 1700s, several country houses were established by Gävle´s wealthy inhabitants. Bönan established itself as a fi shing village and beach resort around 1900. The village continues to be a functional fi shing village, although on a much smaller scale than in the past.

Many inhabitants today live in historic buildings and summer houses that have been renovated into permanent dwellings, or in newly built houses.

Current Mobility Management challenges in the Bönan area include working with measures that can aff ect transport needs and transport choices to avoid building new roads where car traffi c is predicted to increase. A coff ee break will be made during the bus tour.

the cycling trip will take us from Gävle’s main square (stortorget) into the forest and the beautiful trails of Sätrahöjden. Here we test how easily and enjoyably a modern mountain bike can take you out into the nature, which is closer to central Gävle than you might think!

We wait for each other along the route so that no one is left behind, and encourage each other when the trip gets more challenging.

Half way through the tour we will try some locally produced snacks whilst we rest at a forest wind shelter. Here we will chat about our experiences during the trip and the challenges we have overcome.

We will then make the return journey back into central Gävle via trails and Gävle’s high quality cycle paths.

The bicycle tour will take four hours and includes the guide, and rental of a mountain bike and bicycle helmet. The tour is open to anyone who can cycle, even if you have never ridden a mountain bike before.

Participants will gather at 9:00 in Gävle’s main square to test the bikes. The tour will return to the main square at 13:00.

Trainers and comfortable trousers are advisable to wear. There are 4 to 8 places on the tour.

GÄVLE CONCERT HALL / CONFERENCE CENTRE

the conference will be located in the Gävle Concert Hall, which is located in central Gävle. Th e building was inaugurated in January 1998 and was designed by architect Bo Karlberg. Th e beautiful and central location, by the roaring rapids of the Gävle River and the Gävle City Park, makes for a fantastic venue.

the facade is clad in shiny, deep blue tiles. Th e interior walls and fl oors appear the same, but in reality, the fl oor is fi nely sawed white limestone from Greece, while the walls consist of coloured concrete. Th e white colour and beautiful materials are the foundation to the concert hall’s austere interior elegance.

the spacious foyer with panoramic windows facing the river stretches out into a hallway with a music

library, box offi ce, cloakroom, toilets, bar and the smaller concert hall, Bo Linde Hall. At the front of the building lies the main concert hall, known as the Gevalia Hall, and a restaurant. Other conference rooms are situated on the ground fl oor, also with panoramic windows towards the Gävle River. Th e building is well equipped for the disabled. Th e Gevalia Hall is not only an excellent venue for music, it also works perfectly for all types of meetings and events.

the concert hall is designed specifi cally for acoustic sounds and is extremely well suited for speeches, as presenters can be seen and heard well from anywhere in the auditorium. Th e concert hall has 819 seats including 536 in the stalls.
