climate change and the solution for it- Logo linking IAA being an Eco – School (Be Unique, marks

will be lost if traditional logos are copied)- A slogan could be used- Marks awarded for creativity, uniqueness, and delivery of

Eco message

- This information will be displayed on Moodle for you. Any questions – see Miss Amy (DT)

ENVIRONMENTS AOIFocus: Water

This week you will learn about the work of a company called ‘WaterAid’. They help countries of

extreme poverty, where water supply and sanitation is at its ultimate low.

Task 1: Watch the ‘WaterAid’ video (10 minutes)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P40UjaO3_3w

- You may want to make some notes for your Final Activity

Task 2: Read through the work happening at Juru School and Eric’s Story

Juru School – Rwanda

(East Africa)

These children are from Juru School, Juru Sector in Rwanda. Students are aged between 4 and 18 years old. There are 900 students and around 50 students in each class.

Juru School has a new rainwater harvesting tank which is underground. The rainwater is collected from classroom roofs into rainwater jars.

From the rainwater jars, pipes take the water to a huge tank underground. A water pump (above) is used to collect the water.

“Before we had the rainwater harvesting tank, we would get water from the lake. The lake is an hour away and we would go before school and bring the water with us. There was never enough. I would often miss school as collecting water took a long time but now we have safe water to drink at school and I can come every day.” Monique, aged 15.

Although the rainwater harvesting tank has a filter, the water is not quite pure enough to drink. Once it’s collected, the water is then poured into filter buckets which have taps on the side. It’s from these that the school community get their drinking water.

Eric’s story Rwanda

(East Africa)

This is Eric. He is 4 years old and lives in a village in Rwanda.

Rwanda is a country in East Africa

In Eric’s village there are no taps. People fetch water from a nearby swamp. Eric helps his mother collect water for their family every morning at 6am before it gets too hot.

This is the swamp where Eric and his mum collect water. It takes 30 minutes to get to the swamp and back.

Once the containers are filled, they have to walk back home. It’s a difficult walk as water is very heavy.

This water is used for drinking, cooking and washing. The water makes Eric and his family very ill and they often have to spend time in hospital.

Task 3: Write a diary entry, of a day in the life of Eric

- Imagine you are Eric- Think about how you would feel if you were him- Think about the hopes and dreams he may have

The purpose of this activity is for you to consider what life must be like for Eric and for you to realise how lucky we are. Compare your life to his at the age of 4.
