What do you know about the steps the person in charge went through before deciding to hire you?

Did you have to fill out an application? Did you provide a resume? A portfolio? An

interview? Did the person tell you why you were

chosen to be hired? What if you were in charge of a child care

center? How would you go about selecting your staff

“Want Ad---The Ideal EC Employee,” Appendix 2.02A Write a want ad for an ideal early

childhood employee, being as clear and concise as possible.

May I have a volunteer to Google or call the local newspaper to find out the cost per word of a want ad. Then, calculate the costs of their ads at the

going local rate. Have students evaluate their own and

other students’ ads according to “best message” and “most economical” giving 1 to 5 stars in each category per ad.

Share and discuss. Completed Friday-make sure it is in your notebook!

“How Can You Tell?” Appendix 2.02B

Directons: May I have a volunteer to read the opening paragraphs? Discuss meanings of terms used to describe successful

employees. You may use your notes as a reference for terms and

definitions. Develop applicant profiles according to directions on handout.

Group yourself according to DOB…whoever has a birthday

closest to yours….talk to each other to find out. Collect all applicant profiles and distribute randomly. For each profile, have teams of students plan and present a

two-minute role play in which the applicant is seen displaying, or not displaying, the characteristics described in the profile.

Observe and see if you can identify the characteristic and tell how an employee with this characteristic might affect the effective operation of a child care center.

Look at next slide…..

Page 24: ECE II Objective 2.02 Understand strategies for staffing early childhood programs

How Can You Tell? It seems a “no-brainer” that anyone would want an

employee who is honest, patient, kind, reliable, and so on.

The list of desirable characteristics for staff members is not surprising at all.

Perhaps there are other positive qualities that you would add to the list; but the more critical question becomes:

How can you tell when a person has these characteristics?

Basically, when you are the person doing the hiring, you may have to be very observant to determine from an interview whether an applicant has the characteristics needed to be effective as a member of the staff and to work well with children.

Let’s use role play to gain some practice at this. Write a profile of an early childhood applicant. Include the person’s name, age, and other characteristics

of your choice. Include evidence of at least three positive characteristics

and evidence that at least one positive characteristic is missing.

Describe the person in such a way as to make him/her seem “believable.”

We will use the applicant profiles to role play excerpts from interviews and see how observant we can be!

Please do not share what you have written with any other students.
