TRANSCRIPT
The North Lawndale neighborhood suffers from high unemployment and a worsening crime rate, both of which contribute to a lack of commercial enterprise. Access to nutritious food at an affordable price is especially difficult for residents, putting them at greater risk for health issues.
The Farm on Ogden helps provide a solution to this “food desert” crisis.
The Farm produces healthy foods using advanced systems to increase output to feed more people using less land.
The harvested food is then sold to the community at fair prices. To ensure maximum benefit, the Farm offers programs on food preparation and healthy eating habits.
The Farm on Ogden will be built on repurposed land, using a combination of new greenhouses and existing structures.
A joint effort between Lawndale Christian Health Center and Windy City Harvest, the organizers are building on their long and successful history of helping people in underserved areas of Chicago.

Eastern Market opened in 1891, just one mile northeast of the heart of downtown Detroit.
Once an industrial center for the wholesale food industry, it is the now the nation’s largest historic public market district; on peak Saturdays, more than 40,000 people shop the purveyors’ stands. As Eastern Market has grown, the sur rounding neighborhood has also seen signifi cant changes.
Shops and restaurants have clustered near the Market, transforming the former industrial zone into a welcoming retail area.
Eastern Market has a long history of supporting immigrants as vendors, and local farmers and produce dealers are always the featured suppliers. These businesses create entrylevel, living wage jobs vital to the city’s economic recovery.
