About / Aim

This project started as a sub-project of SMART ROOM project by 070 BEXfirst year students. Its objective was to create a safety device that will turn offthe light when earthquake hits.

Requirement / Devices used

1. Arduino / microcontroller2. Piezo Vibration Sensor3. Relay4. NPN transistor5. Battery6. Resistors7. Button8. Wire , PCB , Other basic devices

Working Principle

Piezo Vibration Sensor is a device that works as a variable resistor whoseresistance changes in the response of vibration. It is joined in series with fixedresistor almost equivalent to the working resistance of the piezo sensor forhigher sensitivity. A wire is taken out from the middle constructing a voltagedivider circuit which acts as the input signal of the vibration sensor. When thevibration crosses specific limit we can use relay to stop the electricity.

Since Arduino can only give out 5 V signal and relay works in 6V. We connectrelay across a (more than 6)9V battery and a transistor which acts as a switch. When 5V signal is send from the arduino the transistor behaves as an on switchtherefor 9V will be dissipated across the relay turning the light off. A diodemust be connected in backward biased to 9V battery to save device from theback emf generated via relay.

Possible Field of Use

Although this was designed to switch off the main power supply of home. Thissame circuit can be used to stop any device from being operated at the time ofthe Earthquake.

The most prominent use of this type of device is being used in Bullet trains inJapan. The Bullet Train would jump off the track if it is not stoppedimmediately when earthquake hits.
