Last December and January have signified a new era for CITY College as an International Faculty of the University of Sheffield. Dr. Ketikidis and Dr. Kefalas were awarded the title of Hon Pro-fessor (Teaching and Research), whereas Dr. Vivas received the title of Hon Reader. These academic distinctions demon-strate the exceptional quality, caliber and achievements of CITY‟s academic staff. The procedure that led to the award of these ti-tles followed exactly the same rules and standards as in all other Faculties and proved in every respect that the titles that the aca-demics have at CITY College are well justified and are in accord with high international standards. Moreover, Prof Kefalas, Vice Principal of CITY College and Dr Suzie Savvidou, Lecturer at the Psychology Dept of CITY Col-lege, were invited to participate in the University of Sheffield‟s 5th annual Learning and Teaching Conference on 10 January. Dr. Savvidou presented a very interesting paper on „Practically 'safe': Virtual Environments to Develop Professional Skills’. Professor Kefalas organized a workshop entitled "From resistance to lead-ership: Helping students move on to e-professional futures". Both of them found the conference particularly insightful and came back to Thessaloniki with fresh ideas while staff at Sheffield com-mented positively on the useful ideas they heard from the Col-lege's staff. Dr Petmezas, Vice Principal of CITY College was also given the opportunity to write a one-page article for the January issue of the University‟s Learning and Teaching newsletter. Entitled "Student-Centred Teaching in the post-Browne Era: Learning from our International Faculty", the article demonstrated how CITY College has managed to develop into a fast moving institu-tion in a rather hostile external environment. It was also with great pride that a group of 40 out of a total of 180 CITY College graduates of postgraduate programmes partici-pated in the glamorous Graduation Ceremony of the University of Sheffield, which took place on 14 January in Octagon Center. Prof Kefalas participated in the procession and presented the International faculty graduates, who were welcomed at a recep-tion before the graduation and met with Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Paul White and other University staff.

1st SoL Greece Conference

In the context of the 2010 Thessaloniki Money Show, on the 28

th of No-

vember, several CITY stu-dents had the opportunity to attend the 1st SoL Greece Conference. The Society for Organizational Learning (SoL) invited distinguished speakers who provided a great understanding of and proposed ways to facilitate Systemic Change during the Cri-sis. Mrs. Anthi Theiopoulou, SoL Greece founder, introduced the conference and a large number of interesting and insightful presentations followed. One of the conference‟s highlights was an interactive vide-oconference with Dr. Senge, P., the theoretician of Systems Thinking and The Fifth Discipline. In between presentations, the students actively par-ticipated in round-table discussions and asked ques-tions relevant to the topics discussed. Different opin-ions and points of view were shared, triggering stu-dents to remember all the relevant theories they have been taught at CITY.

Andrei Bota, BA in Business Studies and pendingMA in Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations, comments: “The topic of the conference was highly relevant to the economic issues the world currently faces. Furthermore, the intriguing aspect of the event was the unconvention-al approach the guest speak-ers took, namely combining

different models and concepts from various fields and applying them to the business environment in order to tackle the crisis, not only in Greece but also in other countries. It is worth mentioning that all solutions dis-cussed have long-term applications. In other words, if applied appropriately they could contribute not only to overcome the current problems but also to change the society as we know it.” Roxana Mihaela Rosca, 3rd Level Undergraduate Student, BAED, adds: “My personal conclusion from attending this event is that, in order to facili-tate improvement or change, it is crucial to make the right choices and adopt the right attitude toward doing things differently. Personal change is what triggers adaptation to the new environment and the exploration of fresh oppor-tunities.”

Collecting Goods for SOS Village

CITY Social Consciousness and Responsibility Soci-ety and AV Club joined forces last December to col-lect goods for the children of SOS Village. Ekies All Senses Resort Sponsors CITY Units

In an attempt to strengthen its links with the industry, BAED offers companies in the greater region of North-ern Greece the opportunity to sponsor a number of un-dergraduate and postgraduate units. Our aim is to bring companies closer to the academic environment and provide our students with an insight into the way busi-nesses operate. A range of activities could take place within the frame-work of this newly launched sponsorship programme. In some cases, representatives from participating compa-nies will deliver guest lectures, whereas in other cases students will have the opportunity to visit the companies for a tour and presentation.

The first company that has agreed to serve as a spon-sor is the Ekies All Senses Resort, which is located on the bay of Vourvourou, Sithonia, Chalkidiki.

DataLabs Case Study - Marketing a Service Abroad

CITY Marketing Club is proud to announce that the workshop organised on the 10

th of December proved to

be a success! The DataLabs Case Study of Marketing a Service Abroad tackled contemporary business issues. Dat-aLabs is a Greek company providing educational ser-vices in terms of computer knowledge. Mr. Skaperdas, T., Marketing Director of the company, was kind enough to deliver the workshop. He started by intro-ducing the company and its services to the students, moved on to presenting the implications of the reces-sion and how the company has dealt with these so far, and presented their latest service.

Two groups of students were asked to provide a plan to market the new service, as if they were DataLabs representatives. The result impressed Mr. Skaperdas, who acknowledged the professional approach and re-alistic solutions provided by the students. Everyone actively participated in providing a profitable business solution to the problem raised by the guest speaker. According to the feedback forms that were filled in by participants in the end of the workshop, more than half of the attendees thought it was very interesting and valuable.

10 December - Human Rights

The theme of the Human Rights Day that was celebrated on 10 December 2010 was “Human Rights Defenders Who Act to End Discrimination”. Human rights defenders acting against discrimination, often at great personal risk to both themselves and their families, were recognized and acclaimed on that day. Human Rights Day 2010 highlighted and promoted the achievements of human rights defenders and empha-sized the primary responsibility Governments have to enable and protect their role. The Day also aimed to inspire a new generation of defenders to speak up and take action to end discrimination in all of its forms whenever and wherever it is manifested.

Interview with Irina Balan, 3rd level, Marketing

DECEMBER 2010-JANUARY 2011—ISSUE 18

Q: How was your Christmas holiday? A: I enjoyed a lot the Christmas break, since this se-mester we had 10 weeks of classes before it. There-fore, I needed a break to relax in order to be well pre-pared for the exam period. Christmas is my favorite holiday as it allows me to spend time with my family and friends. I also went to the mountains to enjoy the snow. Q: What is your favorite season? Why? A: Unfortunately I am weather sensitive, and thus, my mood is influenced by the weather. Consequently, my favorite season is spring. I like the feeling of getting all my strength back after the cold weather. The smell of it reminds me of my childhood as I used to go every weekend with my grandmother for picnics. Q: Are you into the Greek culture? Cuisine, cus-toms and music? A: I love the Greek culture and that Greek people are difficult to stress, and they put their personal peace of mind on top of the daily issues. I learned to eat healthi-er here, as I enjoy the Greek cuisine and style of cook-ing. Traditional music is not very easy to listen to, but the new pop-house trend in Greek music is very alike to the Romanian one, so I like it. Q: What places in Thessaloniki, or in Greece, have you visited so far? A: Around Greece, I have visited Athens, Rhodes, Sa-mos and Kos and I plan to visit more cities and islands during this year. In Thessaloniki, I always attend exhibi-tions at Helexpo, since they focus on very interesting themes. Q: How do you spend your free time in Thessaloni-ki? A: In my free time, I enjoy going to the movies, bars, clubs and restaurants. I also enjoy sightseeing and hav-ing coffee with my friends along the seaside.

Q: Do you know people from other departments? How did you meet them? A: I know a few people from both the other departments. I met some of them while partici-pating in CITY Clubs, such as the Marketing Club and AV Club. I also met some people at the Student Spring Symposium. Finally, I made many friends from both departments at the parties organised by CITY and through other friends that I already had from within the College. Q: Why did you chose this specific track for your third level of studies? A: Marketing was the reason why I chose CITY. I al-ways enjoyed marketing as I see it as a very challeng-ing and creative discipline. It also gives me a wealth of different opportunities for my future career. Q: What are your plans after graduation? A: I plan to continue my studies by pursuing a Master‟s degree programme, while getting some work experi-ence in an advertising agency. Q: Will you miss lecturers, colleagues or assign-ments once you graduate? A: I will miss all the challenging and interesting assign-ments and case studies; the lecturers because they gave me a good sense of what will be expected from me in real-life, and also the colleagues because I have built many friendships. Q: What are the main benefits you gained from studying at CITY? A: I acquired knowledge that I will be able to implement immediately in my future career. The academic experi-ence that I was exposed to has developed my way of thinking. All the assignments and case studies that I submitted made me be more responsible and organ-ised in submitting a good piece of work, with an appro-priate length and within a specific time period.
