Delroy Campus – Year 7 Trans ition E vening

What a wonderful couple of weeks we have

had at Dubbo College Delroy Campus. It began

with our Identity through Sport Unit which was

organised by our outstanding English

Department. It was wonderful to see the

students working toward their authentic

assessment task. Wendell Sailor was a high-

light as was the touch football match that was

played at the end of the day with all teachers

and students.

We then celebrated NAIDOC day with our

school and community. The Delroy Campus

Equity team organised the day and it has been

described as “one of the best”. The students

and community were involved in all the

activities and I would like to make special

mention of Doug Gordon and his band who

created a festive feeling with their music.

Our Creative and Performing arts KLA

presented “A night of classics” This was an

outstanding opportunity for students to

showcase their talents and I was very proud of

all students including Jake Monaghan who

blew us away with his guitar skills and

Eliza Darcy who played the piano so

beautifully. There were many more

performances and Ms Dawson and

Mrs Powderly need to be congratulated for

their outstanding co-ordination of the night.

Last Wednesday saw the first round of Serisier

Cup – another great opportunity to work with

our South Campus partners. I was lucky

enough to watch the netball games and it was

great to see the game played in a positive spirit

with Delroy Campus winning the 9/10 game

very convincingly.

I really enjoyed the “Go with the Glow” disco

that was also held on the 22nd August.

Mrs Farquhar and the SRC created a fun

atmosphere so that the students could enjoy the

music. We had so many students attend and all

who attended must be congratulated.

……..Principal’s Report continued from Page1 We received some sad news this week as we were informed that Mr Neil Goodsell,

Principal of Delroy from 1984-1987, passed away at the age of 82 years.

Mr Goodsell was appointed as the second Principal of Delroy High School, many

will remember him with great affection. Upon retirement he moved to Coffs

Harbour and lived the rest of his life there. We have sent our sympathy to

Mr Goodsell’s wife Kit and their family.

IDENTITY THROUGH SPORT…………….

Year 10 English, ‘Identity through Sport.’ Two years ago, we, as an English faculty, decided to

use sport as a basis for an ‘Area of Study.’ We knew

we wanted our students to learn how to write a

‘feature article’ but what we didn’t know, was how to

make this writing task engaging, meaningful and

purposeful to our Year 10 students. It was then

suggested that we have some sporting legends come

to the school and let the Year 10 students interview

them so them so they could complete this task. That’s

how this unit was born.

This year the students engaged in this unit once

again. They examined feature articles about Adam

Goodes and Andre Agassi. They studied the

Documentary “Three Boys Dreaming” and they

examined the thought provoking film, “Footy

Legends”. Then the big day came where they had to

interview a sporting legend. In the preceding weeks

leading up to the interviews, students learnt how to

write a feature article and how to ask powerful and

deliberate questions which evoked a positive and

detailed response from the sporting personalities they

interviewed.

After many weeks and several declines from people,

we finally had our sporting personalities arrive - Ben

Austin, Ronnie Gibbs, Greg Ryan, Stuart Webster,

Wendell Sailor and Megan Dunn. They then sat in

front of groups of 10 – 15 students and answered

questions. The students had worked hard on develop-

ing their questions to maximise the time with each

athlete.

The result has been amazing. The feature articles

were due on the 4th September and we are only

missing six from the entire year. These will be

completed soon. The real purpose behind this unit is

to get students to write. When students write about

something they are interested in, they always produce

their best. That’s what our English Faculty is after. In

all my years of teaching I have never taught a more

successful unit of work. I have never seen students so

eager to want to write and want to learn.

This will be the one unit of work they remember for

the rest of their lives. Thus, there is only one thing to

say; it works and students love it.

I wonder who will come next year to talk to the 2014

Year Ten group??

DELROY CAMPUS NEWSLETTER Wednesday 18th September 2013 4

Approaching the end of Term 3, the SRC have had many successes such as the school disco with the theme of “Glow”.

We also held our Hero Day. The SRC at the current time are also hard at work in preparing and finalising for the school

magazine.

The school disco, “Go with the Glow!” proved to be a huge success for the SRC. We raised a considerable amount of

money but more importantly we managed to pull off a night which was enjoyed by

many students and teachers who were present. There were prizes to be won, great music

and some wonderful memories were made. We’d like to give our gratitude to all those

who attended the disco and helped make it a great night for everyone.

We also held a “Superhero Day” run by the Anti-Bullying Committee (ABC). The SRC

also helped in trying to make this day a great accomplishment as well. Superhero Day

was on Friday, the 6th September.

Also, on the 3rd of September, the school held a Classics Night. The night was

composed of students and teachers portraying their skills in music and drama to the

audience. They performed some great classical pieces from composers such as Beetho-

ven and Bach. The SRC also raised some money selling snacks at this event which proved to be a great night for every-

one. We would like to congratulate our school arts captains, Nikki Avila and Gabrielle Triplet for running the event and

all the students and teachers who participated. We would like to give special thanks to Mrs Powderly and Ms Dawson for

organising this night.

Finally, the SRC also have the school magazine on their agenda. We are hard at work trying to finish off the reports and

organising the pictures. Mr Donnison’s 9/10 commerce class are also aiding the SRC with the funding for the magazine so

we would like to thank them for their input. We would also like to thank the Art department for running the cover compe-

tition for the magazine. We look forward to

some exciting designs.

Also, a reminder to all Year 10 students, the

Year 10 questions for the magazine will be

going out soon. These questions are used to

find out more about the student. The questions

include:

Dubbo College Delroy Campus held it’s Creative and Performing Arts Night on the 3rd

September in the school Hall. It was titled ‘A Night of Classics’ where students from the

elective music classes performed their classical repertoire in costumes of the era. Students

were assessed on their performances for their assessment tasks. They all performed very well

despite being very nervous for a public audience. Well done to all students who worked so

hard!

Students, Taylee Swords and Sam Read performed their amazing routine on the Russian Silks

which wooed the audience with their acrobatic moves.

Twenty students in the Delroy Concert Band performed admirably, playing ‘Silent Movie’ and

‘Hogan’s Heroes’ as well as the newly formed Delroy Voices who sang ‘Hallelujah’ by

Leonard Cohen. A fabulous performance!

Interval provided everyone with the opportunity to view the creative artistic works completed

by students in Visual Arts. Works were of a very high standard and a credit to their teachers,

Ms Doorey, Mrs McConnell and Ms Dawson.

Supper was provided by Mrs Farquhar, Mr Rice and the SRC students.

The evening finished with a classical operatic Cat Duet sung in costume by Mrs Powderly and Ms Dawson, and

accompanied on the grand piano by Ms Rainer.

Overall, a fabulous night of creative and performing arts showcased the body of student work at our great school, ‘Delroy’!

Minokamo trip of a lifetime!

As the school holidays approach, Year 10 student Raymond Hangan is

preparing for the trip of a lifetime.

Earlier in the year, Raymond was selected to represent Dubbo in the

Dubbo City Council Sister City Program and visit Minokamo in Japan.

Raymond has worked diligently to prepare himself for this life changing

experience. He has attended orientation workshops and has started basic Japanese language classes to

help him communicate while in Minokamo.

I would like to wish Raymond all the best for his first flight and first trip overseas.

Assessment Tasks

It is essential that all students attempt and submit assessment tasks so that we can be assured that students are meeting all

outcomes in the courses of study. There is a surprising number of students who recently have not handed in assessment

tasks. Class teachers provide some classroom time for students to work on these activities, and tutors are available in class

and through Homework Centre. In many cases the tasks have been attempted (or finished) but do not get submitted for

marking.

For Year 10 students, Board of Studies letters will be sent home, as non-

completion of assessment tasks will put the award of the ROSA in jeopardy.

Should there be a problem with assessment tasks, please contact me,

Bill Donnison, or the class teacher.

School Beautification

I recently prepared a submission requesting funding to turf the area on the hill

between the HPL and the Food Labs. This area has been the subject of significant

erosion in recent years. Turfing the area will not only beautify the area, but will

complement the improvements which have recently been completed behind the

library and in front of the HPL, and the work done by Mr Alexander and his

environment group.

We will be notified

early in Term 4

whether we have been

successful in this

submission.

8 DELROY CAMPUS NEWSLETTER Wednesday 18th September 2013 8

The vice-captain of Dubbo College Delroy

Campus, Nathan Hawkes has just won a place in

the Western Region Debating Team with students

from Orange, Grenfell and Oberon. The Year 10

student who recently spent time working in Sydney

with the Department of Education’s Director for a

Day program, is a keen public speaker and debater

and is looking forward to taking part in the NSW

debating championships later in the year.

As part of the Delroy Campus debating team, under

the guidance of librarian and coach

Mrs Julie Farquhar, Nathan has developed his

debating skills during the past 18 months.

“I am third speaker so I spend most of my time

countering arguments from the opposing team and

summarising important points from my own team,”

Nathan said.

“Debating has given me the opportunity to develop

my speaking skills and the ability to think quickly

on my feet. Rebuttals are used all the time in debating and they are not structured, so I’ve learnt to speak off-the-cuff.

“As part of the inter-school debating in the Delroy team for the last two years I have learnt team work and time manage-

ment. My coach for the next competition is Ms Lin Eccleston from Molong Central School and she will probably work on

these areas too.”

Delroy coach and mentor Mrs Julie Farquhar said debating at school and regional level introduced students to some

sophisticated topics.

“Most of the topics really demand a deep knowledge of the world and current affairs,” she said.

“Some of the topics this year have included military support for Syria and whether whistle-blowers should be protected

from prosecution. As a team we have even prepared for the possibility of a debate on euthanasia.

“Debating really requires the team to think bigger than the local environment and develop a broad understanding of the

world and world issues. Their arguments must always have good basis and substance and they need to be observant and

articulate clearly.”

As part of the Western Debating Team, Nathan will travel to Sydney in November for a four-day workshop with the NSW

Department of Education’s arts unit, prior to going into the State debating championships.

MAKING THE Most of What You’ve Got Sporting Stars of Yesterday and Today visit Dubbo College Delroy Campus

By Nathan Hawkes

Australian athletes from all walks of life converged on Dubbo College Delroy Campus on Thursday 21 August to pro-vide Year 10 students with information on their lives and experiences, as part of the Year 10 students’ English assessment task. The students are currently studying the unit “Identity Through Sport”, in which they learn about how sport affects individual, social and cultural aspects of a person or community’s identity. Guests for the day included jockey, Greg Ryan, ex-cricketer Stewart Webster, ex-NRL player Ronnie Gibbs, Paralympic swimmer Ben Austin, NRL star Wendell Sailor and Olympic cyclist Megan Dunn.

These sporting heroes travelled from far and wide in order to volunteer their time and experience for the students. Students interviewed any three of the above stars in groups of about ten. In order to gain information about their sportsperson, students had to ask questions of their own creation. The questions asked by Year 10 prompt-ed a similar answer to be given by many of the guests; no matter where you’ve come from, how much money you had growing up or what major occurrences have set you back, you’ve got to take what you have and make the most of it.

MAKING THE Most of What You’ve Got Sporting Stars of Yesterday and Today visit Dubbo College Delroy Campus

By Nathan Hawkes …….continued from Page 8

Three of the guests including Ben Austin, Ronnie Gibbs and Stewart Webster were particularly vocal on this idea, reinforcing its importance with the students of their groups. Ben Austin, a paralympian who has broken multiple world records and won numerous gold medals, spoke how only having one arm created many difficulties for himself, but went on to say how he overcame them and how his disability drove him to bigger and better things. “No matter where you come from, like a poor family, we’ve all got our obstacles to overcome. Anybody can do it. It’s never giving up on something you’ve set out to do.” Austin also spoke about never giving up, no matter how difficult things became. “Think about the big picture when you’re going through tough times.” Ronnie Gibbs, an NRL player who played for both the Sydney Roosters and the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, spoke about how it took true grit and determination to aspire past the restrictions of one’s birth or childhood and to achieve greatness. He also spoke about the fact that everyone is good at something, although it might not be readily apparent at first. “Everyone’s got ability. Everyone will find out what they’re good at in the long run.” .

Ronnie was a very popular speaker for the day, displaying great energy and humour in his presentation whilst still maintaining a degree of seriousness in what he was saying. Stewart Webster, an ex-Sheffield Shield level cricket player discussed taking what ability one has, and using it with careful consideration and consistent effort, stating that it takes diligence to go some-where in life. “You’ve go to have a work ethic. If you have no work ethic, you won’t get far.” He also talked about the need to stay away from drugs and alcohol, stating that they would only cause harm in the long run. The day served to prove one thing to the students of Delroy Campus: no matter who you are, you have the tools needed to create a life for yourself. The students will now complete their assessment tasks with access to a wealth of knowledge and experience. Nathan Hawkes Year 10
