Welcome to the latest DSWF30 event magazine! As David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation celebrates its 30th anniversary year, many of you have already been joining with your herd to raise £30,000 in 300 days for elephants! Here’s how and why they’ve been getting involved!

Less than 100 years ago there were an estimated 10 million elephants roaming our planet. Today, approximately 500,000 remain.

In 2014, one elephant is killed every 15 minutes for its ivory, fuelling an illegal trade that threatens to wipe out this iconic species.

As part of the DSWF’s 30th Anniversary, we’re asking the local community to help us raise £30,000 over 300 days to help fund our elephant conservation projects - before it’s too late.

The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) supports innovative and far-reaching conservation projects throughout Africa and Asia that yield tangible results for endangered wildlife and its habitat.

Synonymous with elephants, at 82, David Shepherd (above) continues to campaign to save them and supports a complete ban on the ivory trade

Dear DSWF30 Supporter,

I never cease to be amazed at how a local community can really get behind a cause and this is exactly what is happening with DSWF30. There is such tremendous warmth of feeling for David Shepherd, the Foundation and the conservation work undertaken over the last 30 years.

The plight of the elephant is so awful. Recent reports indicate that 20,000 elephants have been lost to poaching in the last 12 months, predominantly for their ivory. Therefore, for DSWF’s 30th anniversary, we have set a target to raise £30,000 in 300 days to help save this amazing creature, and the community, our herd, has responded wholeheartedly! People from all walks of life are throwing themselves into a variety of ways to raise funds from sponsored walks and climbs to dog shows and golf tournaments, 30 hour challenges, mufti days and more.

When a community fundraises for a shared goal it really is a case of every little helps - every penny DSWF30 raises will help protect elephants in the wild. It’s also a great way to get the message across; without our help now there may be no elephants in the wild in 30 years time.

DSWF30 runs until 31 January 2015 so there’s plenty of time to join with your herd and get involved. Use one of our ideas or come up with your own and together we can raise £30,000.

Please get in touch if you would like to fundraise on your own or with your herd for DSWF30!

Walk for Wildlife! On 11 May, Ellie Elliot and her little dog Ruby completed a sponsored 10km walk organised by Guildford District Rotary Club. By simply setting up a JustGiving page and galvanising all her friends and family into sponsoring the duo, all the funds raised by Ellie and Ruby have gone towards DSWF30 and the conservation of elephants. Thank you Ellie and Ruby!

It was great fun yesterday! The turn out was great and Ruby thoroughly enjoyed the walk, as did I! The weather was perfect, not too hot but dry! We headed for the Seahorse after for some lunch, and Ruby slept the entire time, she was totally exhausted!

Snares are regularly retrieved by rangers in African national parks

The Waterways Project, Uganda

Home to numerous elephants, Murchison Falls National Park is dominated by water courses and is extremely vulnerable to poaching and ivory smuggling.

Working in the region for over 10 years, DSWF has built and equipped ranger posts and helps train anti-poaching marine rangers to patrol lakes and rivers to target illegal activities, remove snares and apprehend wildlife criminals. Lightweight boats mean rangers can be quickly mobilised to tackle any illegal activities.

Reducing illegal activity in the region by up to 70%, rangers have destroyed over 200 poaching boats, 50km of illegal fishing nets, 5,000 snares and 200 spears. See more here.

How your fundraising will help to save elephants

Park protection & Elephant orphanage, ZambiaDSWF has been working in Zambia for over 30

years. We helped establish the country’s first elephant orphanage funding rescue, rehabilitation and release

back to the wild for the innocent victims of ivory poaching.

DSWF also funds anti-poaching units to protect the parks and their wildlife while education and community

programmes ensure a deeper understanding and tolerance of wildlife by local people.

Sadly 98% of Zambia’s elephants were wiped out in the ivory wars on the 1980s. Our work is helping to

secure a better future for this amazing species in one of Africa’s most verdant countries. See more here.
