Meet Kristen Flick: The College of Dentistry’s First MSW Practicum Student

You may have seen or heard about Kristen Flick; she is a master’s degree in social work (MSW) candidate from the UI School of Social Work who is working in the College of Dentistry (CoD) clinics. Kristen is doing her advanced practicum at the CoD during the current academic year as part of a pilot program to evaluate the effectiveness of having a social worker at the college. Kristen works Mondays from 8-noon and Tuesday through Thursday from 8-4. She enjoys working with the Business Office and Clinic Administration. Sherry Stout, Dental Patient Business Office, is her direct supervisor. Patient representative Ann Synan, Clinic Administration, helps supervise Kristen with many of her patient inter-actions and issues in the clinics. Kristen said that she chose social work because it is a versatile profession:

she can work with individuals, families or organizations; in a health care or private setting; or address issues related to patient assistance, substance abuse, mental health, policy & planning, politics, or child welfare. Kristen Flick, cont. on page 2

Before coming to the CoD, Kristen completed a one-semester practicum at UI Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) in the renal dialysis unit. She has been able to apply many of the skills she acquired at UIHC to her practicum here at the College of Dentistry. One of Kristen’s projects has been to survey the D3 and D4 students about their knowledge in using either interpreter phones supplied by Delta Dental or relying on an in-house faculty, staff or stu-dent who can translate for a non-English speaking dental patient. During their first year, dental students are given information about using foreign language interpreter services when their patient does not speak English. Because interpreter information isn’t needed until a dental student’s third or fourth year of schooling, the students often forget the process. Kristen is also working to provide transportation options to facilitate the dental appointments of Medicaid patients who travel long distances. Her efforts help decrease the number of no-show patients, assist the students with fulfilling their requirements for graduation and improve revenue for the college. Sherry Stout recalls a patient who interacted with Kristen and later called the college to relate her experience with the practicum student. “She said ‘Kristen was wonderful, very informative, and profes-sional,’” Sherry says. The patient also noted that Kristen spoke to her in a caring manner and was excellent: “Kristen was just tremendous,” the patient told Sherry, “and she did not talk down to me; she was very helpful. A+!” Scott Arneson, associate dean for finance and facilities, agrees. “I’m very pleased with the initial outcomes of our Social Work Practicum Program trial. The entire college has benefitted from Kristen’s presence. She has been extremely helpful with individual patient cases, has put together various resources for faculty, staff and students to use, and has presented in class settings. While Kristen brings advanced training and skills, her pleasant demeanor makes her extremely approachable. I’d definitely call the pilot program a success!” Sherry Stout seconds Scott’s positive response to the pilot program. “Kristen has demonstrated her value to the college in a big way!” Dr. Michelle McQuistan has invited Kristen to present to faculty, staff and students on partnering with social workers and foreign language interpretation services, including how to use the Delta Dental Language Line and the interpreting phones that are located throughout the clinics. The presentation will be held on Wednesday, April 12, from 12:00-12:50 pm, in Galagan 14C. (For additional information, see the announcement about her upcoming presentation on page 10.) If you need to contact Kristen, she is located at the third floor Business Office (S345 DSB). She can also be contacted by e-mail ([email protected]) or by phone (319-335-4875).

Houchen Bindery Schedule

April 17‐20, 2017

The above dates reflect Monday-Thursday pickup and delivery. Please have orders ready by Monday at noon. Routes may change without warning.

Word Play: The word UP! The two letter word up has more meanings than any other two letter word in the English language. It can be used as a noun, a verb, an adjective, an adverb, and a preposition. For instance:

We wake up in the morning.

At meetings, a topic may come up.

A political official may be up for election.

It may be up to a secretary to write up a report.

We call up our friends.

We warm up the leftovers and clean up the kitchen.

We lock up the house.

We fix up the old car.

People can stir up trouble.

People may line up for tickets.

Sometimes you may want to give up.

We can work up an appetite.

We can also think up excuses.

Sometimes we dress up.

A drain may need to be opened up because it is stopped up.

A shopkeeper may open up his store in the morning and then close it up at night.

Sometimes we may be mixed up.

You may feel up to doing something.

How about clouding up? Taking up a lot of time? When is your time up? Does soil dry up? Let’s wrap it up!
