Transitional Kitchen Design in Chicago Loft Pays Homage to Arts and Crafts Pioneer Charles Rennie Mackintosh

From top to bottom, this kitchen reflects the homeowners’ love of the Arts and Crafts era. Inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, an Arts & Crafts pioneer often referenced as the European counterpart to Frank Lloyd Wright, it was important to be as historically accurate as possible while incorporating all of the mod-ern conveniences needed today.

Classic Motawi tiles are the back drop for this Rennie MacIntosh inspired design. Up-to-date appliances and warm colors are the open invitation to cook in this open-concept kitchen. From the fully integrated refrigera-tor to the right of the oven, to the microwave drawer in the island, this space offers all the amenities for a world-class meal.

Facing page: Space in this narrow bathroom has been maximized by the removal of two dividing walls. Interior designer Tina Muller introduced glass walls to the shower and specified a dark wood vanity with a Carrara marble top.

Remodeling projects often require plenty of vision and lateral thinking, especially when the space is constrained.

This was precisely the case for this master bathroom, says interior designer Tina Muller of Drury Design.

“The bathroom needed to be completely remodeled but there was literally nowhere to go,” she says. “We could only use the existing space, which

was long and narrow. The room was made smaller by a solid wall between the tub and shower, and a half wall that concealed the toilet.”

Muller says the decor was also long past its use-by date, and included a carpeted floor.

“The owner wanted a much more modern, clean-lined master bathroom that would be very serene, like a spa. It needed to be soft, and

not too hard-edged, with an elegant look.”

To open up the space, the two dividing walls were removed, and the shower walls replaced with glass.

“This completely opened up the bathroom and made it seem a lot larger,” says Muller. “Because we removed the half wall, the new toilet was turned 90° so it now backs up to the main wall, which is a lot more
