Dear Friends,
As we reflect
on the Center’s
accomplish-
ments in the
2018-19
academic year, we pause to
express our gratitude to those
who so generously give of their
time. In partnership with our
volunteers, our impact is
manyfold greater. The
contributions of hundreds of
volunteers range from teaching
medical students, serving on
planning committees, speaking
at conferences, facilitating
fundraising events, making
compassion quilts, starring in
videos, drafting policy,
teaching the next generation of
health care professionals, and
so much more.
Our impact is made possible by
the dedication, skill and caring
of each of our volunteers.
Thank you for sharing your
time and talents with the Center
and those we serve.
With gratitude,
Susan W. Tolle, MD

Dr. Tyler Tate to Direct Professionalism and Comfort Care The Center for Ethics in Health Care is delighted to partner with the OHSU Pediatric
Palliative Care Program in sharing Dr. Tate's time so that he can pursue his love of both
palliative medicine and medical ethics. Dr. Tate completed his residency in pediatrics,
fellowship in clinical ethics and MA in bioethics at the University of Washington, and a
fellowship in palliative care at Duke University. Since joining the OHSU faculty in
September 2018, he has published five manuscripts and presented at one international
and two national meetings. With funding from an endowment established by donors in
memory of Miles J. Edwards, we are very pleased to welcome Dr. Tate on July 1, 2019
as the Center’s new Director of Professionalism and Comfort Care.
Dr. Ron Naito Establishes a Directorship in Serious Illness Education The Center for Ethics in Health Care is deeply honored to announce the establishment of
the Ronald W. Naito Directorship in Serious Illness Education with a $1-million gift
from the Ronald W. Naito, MD Foundation to launch the endowment fund. It is
Dr. Naito's hope that his lead gift will inspire others to contribute an additional $1.5
million to raise the Serious Illness Endowment Fund to the level of an endowed chair.
Dr. Katie Stowers will serve as the inaugural Ronald W. Naito Director in Serious
Illness Education.
The Kinsman Foundation Supports Statewide Conferences With generous support from The Kinsman Foundation, the Center recently hosted the
annual statewide Kinsman Bioethics Conference in Eugene. A highlight for the Oregon
bioethics community, this conference draws healthcare professionals from across the
state to gather, collaborate and share innovative practices. This year, under the
leadership of Lynn A. Jansen, PhD, RN, Madeline Brill Nelson Chair of Ethics
Education, the Center partnered with PeaceHealth Eugene and the University of Oregon
to build the conference theme, “Raising Voices: The Ethics of Dialogue and
Communication in Health Care.” Conference breakout sessions focused on the
challenges experienced by marginalized populations in healthcare.
In addition to the annual Kinsman Bioethics Conference, the Center is partnering with
communities throughout the state, finding new ways to empower regional leaders to
improve support for honoring patients’ wishes as they near the end of their lives.
Save the Date: Celebrate the Center for Ethics 30th Anniversary The 2019 Center for Ethics Annual Community luncheon will be held on September 16,
2019 from 11:30 AM to 1 PM at the Multnomah Athletic Club. We hope you will save
the date and join us to celebrate the impact of the Center’s first 30 years and share our
vision for the future.
