WELCOME from Henry Mullarkey Hon LCPU
I was approached by a number of people at an AV Festival some seven years ago following the news that the Great Northern AV day was looking likely to be coming to an end. The suggestion was that I should think about taking it over.
With my experience of having organised events and AV Competitions for my Federation for some years, it was felt I would be a suitable candidate. I knew it was going to be difficult to follow the success of the previous years, but with encouragement from numerous people and with John Smith and Jill K. Bunting on board, we came up with a new formula to make it a weekend event
Finding a new venue was not easy, but with the help of Roy Appleby who had used the Hough End Centre for events, we found this to be suitable - and thus another member was added to the team.
To encourage more authors to take part, New Horizions was created especially for the newer workers who would receive constructive comments from the adjudicators. This has proved to be a success where new workers have gone forward and achieved more awards and distinctions.
Another challenge was to include entertainment on Friday evening and we feel that the last 6 years have been very good with a varied and entertaining programme.
As with all events you need a plan “B”, but this year we faced an unexpected new challenge, (along with everyone else.) Several discussions took place and early on we knew the outcome - things had to change big time.
The friendly meetings and conversations together over a weekend and viewing the sequences on a big screen with a good sound system was just not going to happen.
To celebrate the last 25 years of the Great Northern we have put together a programme (well Jill has) of some of the most successful sequences from those years. Some of these have been converted from slide/ tape (you may have to ask someone what that was) for anyone who has only worked in the recent digital format.
To conclude, I hope you enjoy the weekend and will be entertained by the various stories.
My thanks go to Jill and John for all their efforts in these difficult times.

ForewordBy Ron Davies FRPS, FIPF, EFIAP, FACI(M)
The origin of the Great Northern Festival 26 years ago may not be known to many but the inspiration came from the following:
Colin Balls, Peter Coles and I travelled extensively to International festivals in Europe, from Brittany in the west to Hungary and Romania in the east.
The French were lucky enough to have a number of festivals at various venues. We, in the UK, had only the RPS International every two years and the Nationals in the intervening years.
The three of us thought that we needed more competitions in order to further the experience of home grown AV'ers.
As a Wilmslow Guild AV Group committee member, I put the suggestion forward to the rest of the committee to have a National event at the Guild. Not everyone was in favour, there were doubts as to what the RPS might say, would the Guild fund it, etc.
Despite this I decided to organise the event and promised that I would make the festival self-sufficient, all expenses would be met by entrance fees. However, advertising was needed, prizes provided, programmes printed and judges' expenses met, etc. This meant approaching numerous companies asking for sponsorship. These were slide/tape times so film and cassette tapes constitut-ed most of the prizes.
PAGB patronage, medals and ribbons were applied for and received. The Guild agreed to having the festival in the main hall which had an excellent sound system. The festival was a goer.
Colin and Peter were fully committed. Colin would provide the ever-reliable Royale projector, Peter, as AV News editor, advertised the event and entries rolled in. I proofed the sequences and Peter then produced the programme.
I enlisted the help of four friends from the Wilmslow Guild AV Group committee. On the day Colin projected, assisted by Reg Royle, Mike Hardcastle was on the lights, Jean Royle, Christine Hardcastle and my wife Linda were the reception team and I did the MC's job.
The festival was a great success and made a profit which was paid into the parent Wilmslow Guild account.
We introduced the idea of giving the entrants feedback in terms of A,B,C grades from each of the 3 judges. Every year we tried to team up two experienced judges with one up and coming judge in order to give them the experience not readily available elsewhere. This also increased the pool of available and competent judges.

Over the next five or six years the event proved to be consistently popular, successful and profitable.
I then handed over the organisation to Howard and Suzanne Gregory who continued to run it with the Guild financing the event. They did an excellent job during the ensuing years before then deciding that the Great Northern should cease to be.
The members of the current team felt that it was important that the Festival should continue and history somewhat repeated itself.
Using their own funds, they set about searching for a new, suitable venue, negotiating with the venue management, local hotels and caterers, finding printers for the programme, obtaining some sponsorship and applying for PAGB Patronage etc.
Over the past six years they have done sterling work in keeping the traditions going and the festival is in safe hands.
Unfortunately, Covid 19 has dictated that for this year we cannot have a "normal" festival but in its place we are to enjoy a Celebration of 25 glorious years of the Great Northern Festival.
Ron Davies FRPS, FIPF, EFIAP, FACI(M)
Way back in June it seemed such a simple concept.
All that I needed to do was to look through the past records and select a number of memorable sequences from the 1000 plus entries into the Great Northern over the past quarter of a century.
Choosing just what to show was difficult enough, but I then also had to try and ensure that as many authors as possible were represented - oh, and to try and produce a balanced programme that would fit into the available time slots….and to try not to include sequences that were being shown in the RPS ‘Retrospective’.
Once this was eventually done, then all that was left to do was contact the various authors and, if they were agreeable, to sit back and patiently await the arrival of their sequences - simple!!
Our sincere thanks go to all the authors for allowing their work to be shown and especially to those authors who have digitised their slide/tape shows which has enabled us to show at least one sequence from each of the 25 years.
So sit back in your comfy chair, relax and enjoy the Celebration.

The Dream
For your interest the following are the records from the very first Great Northern Festival right up to the present day.
The Festival has always been keen to encourage the newcomers to our hobby, be that as an entrant, but also as an introduction for new judges.
If you look closely down the lists of names, it is interesting to note that a number of those who won either the original newcomers ‘Restricted’ section or latterly, the much enlarged ‘New Horizons’ competition have subsequently had deserved success in many more competitions over the recent years!
Some have also gone on to become well known and respected judges.
