Mission Statement We are one in our Church’s teachings and in the variety of gifts, services and ministries that we employ to help build up the Kingdom of God. Therefore, we commit ourselves to:
Support all that makes our worship more life-giving, joyful and participatory; and become more actively involved in the sacraments of the church.
Teach the saving message of Christ in our homes, our schools, and in our community so that all may come to a deeper understanding, conversion, and personal witness to Christ.
Be a community of Christians called together to love one another, share with one another, and pray with one another in the spirit of the Lord. Help one another and minister willingly, compassionately, and generously to the poor and needy. Proclaim the good news of Christ in word and deed by living and sharing our faith in the parish.

Charity in Action Pope Francis has touched our hearts and has prompted a world-wide conversation. He has a spirit of simplicity and action. He is kind to the poor. He speaks plainly, yet he is not without controversy, but nonetheless he is a blessing. This week’s scripture from the prophet Isaiah gives us a plain and straight forward call to charity. We are continuously called by Father Francis to seek the Lord’s favor. Now is the time for us to evaluate our kindness in action.
The prophet is leading the people Israel out of the Babylonian Exile. This is a journey of return. Here is a brief back story. The Jewish people experienced two exiles. The first was Egypt; the second was the Babylonian Exile. In this second experience, God’s chosen people negatively assimilated to the pagan culture. Thousands turned from the God of Abraham and were humiliated. Coming to their senses, and essentially through the permission of King Cyrus, the Hebrew people would return to Jerusalem. A small remnant, for sure, but now Isaiah issues a call to hope. This book of consolation is a call to walk with God in communion with our family, “do not turn your back on your own”. If Israel pursues ‘this walk’, this journey of simplicity, “then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall be come for you like midday.” Once commonly absent, the divine indwelling, our peace of mind and soul will return. We will even experience scriptural joy as is so beautifully witnessed in the dai-ly life of Pope Francis. So, how is our charity? May we once again humbly ask the Lord for his favor. May he give us a true desire to share, stepping out of our comfort zone. We know somehow in the deepest recesses of our soul that Pope Francis has it right. We innately know that we will remain restless, tossing and turning, discontent until like Christ himself, we try very, very hard to be kind each day in our daily routine. It is at first very hard work. Y et we know that it will change us. I know that when I oppose the Holy Spirit I grow cold and distant. I know that when we say yes to charity, we become partners of life. We know that when we are partners ‘we will be the light of the world’.
God bless you. Fr. Mike Gerlach

What the Church Teaches and Why: Growing end-of-life medical concerns in our country include (1) palliative care and hospice, and (2) the promotion of assisted suicide and euthanasia. Join us on Monday, February 10th at 7:00PM in Meehan Center for a discussion of these important topics by Joe Zalot of the National Catholic Bioethics Center. The first part of the presentation will distinguish between palliative care and hospice, identify ethical challenges associated with them (as well as questions to ask providers), and discuss what the Church says about them. The second part will address the growing prevalence of assisted suicide and euthanasia and demonstrate how these realities are affecting the care of the elderly and terminally ill. All are welcome.
February 10: St. Scholastica Scholastica was the twin sister of St. Benedict of Nursia. They were born in the late 400s and shared many common interests, especially that of being very close to God in prayer. Both Benedict and Scholastica established monasteries not far from each other. They would meet about once a year for a day of prayer. The last time they met Scholastica begged Benedict to stay with her that night. He refused because his rule did not allow for overnight visits. Scholastica put her head down and cried. A violent storm came up and Benedict had to stay. She told him that he said, “No,” so she cried out to God and he answered her prayer. Scholastica died a few days later. Imagine how Benedict would have felt if he had not stayed with his sister.
