COURSE DESCRIPTION
• Writing skills laboratory
• Work on news releases, fact sheets, PSAs, letters to the editor, social media
• Utilize strategy and theory in writing
• Working knowledge of AP style
PREREQUISITES
Journalism 328Journalism 202
REQUIRED MATERIALS• Public Relations Writing Worktext, Third
Edition (Zappala)
• Associated Press Stylebook
(2012 or 2013)
• Flash drive
POLICIES
• Do your own work.
• If you are copying anything from the web, you are cheating.
• If you are using a classmate’s work as a model, you are cheating.
• If you are using a previous student’s work from a fraternity or sorority file, you are cheating.
• Skills lab - repetition
ATTENDANCE
• Take two (email, phone numbers)
• Attendance policy
• Responsible for classwork – not here, 0 for assignment
• Responsible for homework – get assignment from buddy
• Class participation is 10 percent of grade
GRADING
• Style, grammar, spelling, punctuation, inverted pyramid
• Rewrite opportunities
Your work will be marked on a 0-4 scale –
with a 4 corresponding to an “A’ and a 0 to a “F” similar to your GPA.
4 - The work is of professional quality, acceptable in a professional setting
3 - The work is good but needs editing
2 - Quality of work is weak and needs major editing
1 - Work fails to meet requirements and needs a complete rewrite
0 - Unacceptable
GRADING
Final grades will be based on the following scale:
A 93-100
B 86-92
C 78-85
D 70-77
F 69 or below
GRADING
Your final grade will be based on the following percentages:
Class and homework assignments:30%
Project: 30%
Tests and quizzes: 30%
Attendance and participation: 10%
EXTRA CREDIT
• Final page of syllabus
• Up to five points added to your final grade
• MUST submit a proposal by Thursday, Feb. 27
