Page 2 Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time
From the Desk of Father Raaser
On June 29, 1972, Blessed Pope Paul VI (soon to be declared a saint in October) said these very sad yet prophetic words, “from some fissure the smoke of Satan has entered the temple of God.” Recently, the smoke has become darker and heavier.
We have just come through a most disturbing, sad, even satanic summer of scandals in our Church, the sickening findings of sexual abuse by some clergy. It is time for all of us to enter into a time of prayer and repentance for ourselves and for the priests and bishops who have fallen. Our hearts bleed for the victims of the fallen clergy and we pray for their health, healing and peace.
No one wants to hear that his or her body is failing; we dread the day when we hear we may have cancer. For some, the fight will be over quickly, while others will go through much pain and suffering to become well again. Sadly, the Body of Christ, the Church is going through painful times because of the disease of sexual abuse of minors, the sacrilege of her priests and bishops, the loosing of the Faith among her children, the devastation and the scandal to the world. The body may be diseased, even rotting away because of its sinful members, but the Head of the Body, Christ will always remain holy and pure. The Bridegroom, who is Christ will always protect and be faithful to His bride the Church, even though some have been unfaithful to Him. Infidelity, betrayal, adultery is a terrible sin; it wrecks families and individuals. Be it between husband and wife, or priest and the Church the fallout is terrible.
We need now to go through the tough regimen of healing and therapy. We need to get to the root of the problem and heal it. It will not be easy, but through the ages of the Church there were many other times when the clergy failed the Bride. And in those days, arose great saints, great reformers, mostly from you the faithful laity, who called back the priests to their sacred duty.
All of us need to pray to God for a reform of the clergy. For too long now, things have become adrift in the priesthood, for many they have lost their true identity. If all of us can pray at least a decade of the rosary, to ask Our Lady, Queen of the Clergy to renew in holiness the Sacred Priesthood of her Son. The power of prayer cannot be underestimated.
Despite the sadness of this summer’s news, we as Catholic Christians are people of hope; we are anchored in Christ, the source of all our hope. We the members of the Body of Christ need to protect our Mother as well, through prayer, sacrifice and penance. Traditionally, Thursday is the day for remembering the priesthood, because of Holy Thursday, perhaps as a parish we can pray and sacrifice on Thursdays for the reform of the clergy. Attend Mass on Thursday, or make a holy hour in Church, visit the Blessed Sacrament, pray the rosary, fast from something. All of us can do something for the healing and well-being of the Church.
God will bring out great good from these sad days. “Love never fails”, St. Paul wrote. The love that Christ has for us, His Church will get us through these sad, tragic times. As we go through them, however, it will be painful, but in the end God and the truth will prevail.
The smoke of Satan may have entered into the Church, but it will never overcome the Church and the holiness of her people. Our Lady, Queen of the Clergy, pray for our Pope, bishops priests, and deacons. Amen.
We also need to pray for the abusers. God would want that of us. Somewhere along their life, these priests and bishops lost the reason why God called them in the first place. They lost their prayer life, their discipline and the source of their joy: the Mass and Sacraments, God’s holy people. Their love for God alone grew cold. We pray for their repentance and their souls. May God have mercy on them. St. Augustine taught us that we must hate the sin, but love the sinner, even when it is most difficult to do so.

IS GOD CALLING YOU TO SERVE?
Within the parish, there are certain ministries (service) that are important to the Sacred Liturgy. Among them are Altar Servers, Ushers, Lectors, Ministers of Holy Communion, over the summer months, would you consider serving your parish as a liturgical minister? We will train you and don’t be shy!
Altar Server Any boy or girl from the 5th grade and upwards are invited to join the Altar Servers. Of all the ministries, the Altar Server stands closest to the Altar and the priest. It is a most privileged place to stand and serve.
Lector The Lector proclaims God’s Word at Mass in the First and Second Readings as well as prays the petitions of the Universal Prayer (Prayers of the Faithful). Any parishioner over the age of 16 and who has good communication skills is invited.
Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion An Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion assists the priest at the celebration of the Mass to distribute the Holy Eucharist, the Body and Blood of our Lord to other parishioners. We need help on Sundays and weekday Masses. Another aspect of the ministry is to bring home the Lord to those who are sick or homebound. If this aspect of the ministry interests you, please consider it.
Any adult parishioner is invited.
Usher The ministry of Usher is most important in the life of the parish. You are the face of our parish. You greet people at the door, assist them to their seats and collect the offering, pass out the bulletins and say goodbye to God’s faithful as they leave Church. Any male or female adult is invited to be a minister of hospitality. If you are interested, please call Fr. Raaser at the Parish Center, or submit your name and contact information to [email protected].

THE GOOD NEWS FROM YOUR PREP
Saint Monica – Feast Day August 27th & Saint Augustine – Feast Day August 28th
Monica was raised as a Christian, but married someone from a different faith. Her husband, Patricius, was an atheist politician. He was violent and regularly abused her. Monica remained patient and served him with selfless love and devotion. She prayed for him every day. A year before Patricius died, he converted to Catholicism—due mostly to Monica's prayers and powerful example.
Monica also worried about her son, Augustine. Though brilliant and gifted, he spent most of his time living promiscuously. She prayed daily and intensely for Augustine, fasted for his sake, and begged God to help him return to faith.
While in Milan, she met Ambrose, the local bishop who would later be canonized a saint. Ambrose became a spiritual guide to her. He noted her restless longing for her son and the hours she spent praying for him. He promised her, "Surely the son of so many tears will not perish." His prediction would prove correct.
Augustine and Ambrose struck up a friendship and began discussions about Christianity. As a result of their many dialogues, Augustine converted to Catholicism. Ambrose baptized the 32-year-old Augustine, who would eventually grow into one of the greatest saints in the Catholic Church.
What can we learn from Monica? First, don't stop praying for your child. When Monica complained that Augustine would not listen to her, Ambrose urged her, "Speak less to Augustine about God and more to God about Augustine.” She took his advice and never gave up. Secondly do not just pray for your child—you should also pray for an "Ambrose" to step into your child's life. Just as Ambrose stepped in to help Augustine, so you might need someone to nudge your child along. (Even if your child tunes you out, don't be closed off to helping other children return to the faith. You could be the Ambrose for someone else's Augustine!)
Among all the saints in heaven, few know the gut-wrenching pain of a wayward child more than Saint Monica. Reach out to her and ask her to pray for your child, just as she did for Augustine. "Saint Monica, I need your prayers. You know exactly how I'm feeling because you once felt it yourself. I'm hurting, hopeless, and in despair. I desperately want my child to return to Christ in his Church but I can't do it alone. I need God's help. Please join me in begging the Lord's powerful grace to flow into my child's life. Ask the Lord Jesus to soften his heart, prepare a path for his conversion, and activate the Holy Spirit in his life. Amen."
Saints Monica and Augustine pray for us, Amen
