So, what is the BUZZ about Mobile Applications?

The total number of mobile users in India stood at 296.08 million at the end of July 2008, as against 192.98 million a year

ago. And it is growing at 53.44 per cent per year! Mobile users read, l isten, watch and work, wherever they wish, usingservices personalized to their interests and even physical location.

This is leading to huge growth in the mobile apps domain, but fulfilling the needs of easy to use and intuitive mobile apps

is a challenge. Be it a small company like a start-up or big telecom players, it’s hard to find skilled resources to handle the

demand. Companies require developers at different levels to cater the client requirement and its daunting task to find

industry ready Mobile App developers.

Basics first: Mobile Applications Ecosystem

The mobile applications ecosystem consists of different participants

playing different roles and jointly supporting the continued growth of

the market as a whole. Participants can be broadly categorized into four

groups – operating system developers, device manufacturers, cell and

mobile network operators, and independents. The unspoken

participants are the application users or consumers.

The point here is some participants may fall into multiple categories.

Operating system developers develop operating systems for

mobile devices and, in some cases, traditional computer operating systems. They may also develop applications

that run within their proprietary operating systems.

Device manufacturers create the physical hardware devices that run the operating systems for the mobile devices.

Total mobile application downloads topped

2.69 billion in 2009 and the total is expected

to grow to 21.3 billion by 20137 - a 700

percent increase that is expected to take

place in an exponential manner.

Cell and mobile network operators are also participants, licensing and creating their own applications for resale

through their own ‘app stores’ on their networks and online.

Independents are non-affiliated or weakly-affiliated participants who offer many of the applications available on

some, or all, of the platforms. While Independents do not necessarily produce any applications, they do act as adistribution channel for applications and due to the volume of traffic they draw, they are an important factor in the

ecosystem.

Opportunities, Growth & Overview of Mobile ApplicationsThese stats will prove you how big this industry is… read below find out more.

Here are some key facts on Mobile Applications and its growth

Its forecasted that mobile applications on devices will sweep over

the web-access from desktops within the next 5 years. By 2015,

over 1 billion end users globally are estimated to gain access to

the internet by means of their mobile handset.

Mobile software downloads are likely to grow more than 700

percent, from 2.9 billion to 21 billion, by 2013. Most of these

applications to be downloaded do not really exist today.

The all round mobile applications industry for both premium and

free applications is believed to reach a worth of $9 billion by 2013

There are nearly 1.2 billion new mobile handsets sold throughout the world, 14.5 percent (172.4 million handsets)

were smart phones have the ability of taking advantage of rich mobile applications.

By and large mobile application downloads capped 2.69 billion in 2009 and the total is likely to grow up to 21.3

billion by 2013 - a 700 percentage point growth that is expected to take place in an tremendously

The no of Mobile applications

developed is increasing and this applies

to both consumer and enterpriseplatforms. While iPhone, Android are

leading in consumer segment,

BlackBerry is still a dominant playerwhen it comes to Enterprise segment.

Mobile OS platforms

Mobile devices are evolving into increasingly sophisticated general purpose computers and this has led to the

development of a variety of platforms and operating systems in themobile space. Today, the operating system lying inside your mobile

device is equally important as the device manufacturer. The various

features, GUI, processing speed, and most importantly, the applications

available for your device will depend greatly on the underlying OS.

Today’s phones are expected to run a growing range of software such

as internet browsers, navigation packages, games and music/video

players. Application platforms are supposed to provide a ground for

them. Mobile developers typically develop for multiple platforms tomaximize their available market. This can be a difficult and time-consuming task as multiple platforms use different API

calls for common OS operations and accessing OS resources such as accessing memory and files.

Today, about 80% of apps are free, andmobile phone users will download more

than eight billion applications this year,

rising spending in app stores to $6.2

billion, according to a new Gartner report.

Popular Operating systems(OS) used in Smartphone’s

iPhone OS from Apple Inc.

iOS is the world’s most advanced mobile platform, redefining what can be done with a mobile device. The iOS SDK

combined with Xcode tools make it easy to create apps that perform feats never before attempted. iOS 4 delivers several

new multitasking services that allow your apps to perform tasks in the background while preserving battery life and

performance. With the App Store present on every iOS device, and localized around the world, there is simply no platform

more compelling for mobile developers.. iPhone app store is the online market for downloading iPhone applications. Third

party applications were not officially supported until the release of iPhone OS 2.0 on July 11th 2008. Presently XCode 4 is

the development environment and the applications are written in Objective C (a variant of language C)

Android from GoogleInc.

Android was developed by Google Inc. Android is an Open Source, Linux-derived platform backed by Google, along with

major hardware and software developers (such as Intel, HTC, ARM, and eBay, to name a few), that form the Open Handset

Alliance. This OS, though very new, already has a cult following among programmers eager to develop apps for its flexible,

Open Source, back end. Android promises to give developers access to every aspect of the phone’s operation. This lends

many to foresee the promise of further growth for the Android platform.

Symbian OS from the Symbian Foundation

Symbian has the largest share in most markets worldwide, but lags behind other companies in the relatively small but

highly visible North American market. It has been used by many major handset manufacturers, including BenQ, Fujitsu, LG,

Mitsubishi, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Sharp, and Sony Ericsson. Prior to 2009, Symbian supported multiple user

interfaces, i.e. UIQ from UIQ Technologies, S60 from Nokia, and MOAP from NTT DOCOMO. As part of the formation of

the Symbian platform in 2009 these three UIs were merged into a single platform which is now fully open source.

RIM Blackberry OS

This is a proprietary software platform, created by Research In Motion, for their Black Berry phones. OS is focused on easy

operation and was originally designed for business.

The Blackberry operating system provides multi-tasking and supports specialized input devices that have been adopted by

RIM for use in its handhelds, particularly the trackwheel, trackball, and most recently, the trackpad and touchscreen. The

BlackBerry platform is perhaps best known for its native support for corporate email, through MIDP 1.0 and, more

recently, a subset of MIDP 2.0, which and allows complete wireless activation and synchronization with Microsoft

Exchange, Lotus Domino, or Novell GroupWise email, calendar, tasks, notes, and contacts, when used in conjunction with

BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The operating system also supports WAP 1.2. Recently it has seen a surge in third-party

applications and has been improved to offer full multimedia support.

Windows Mobile from Microsoft

Windows Mobile 6 Professional (for touch screen devices) and Windows Mobile 6 Standard were unveiled in February

2007. It has been criticized for having a user interface which is not optimized for touch input by fingers; instead, it is more

usable with a stylus. However, unlike iPhone OS, it does support both touch screen and physical keyboard configurations.

On February 15th, 2010 Microsoft unveiled its next-generation mobile OS, Windows Phone 7. The new mobile OS includes

a completely new over-hauled UI called “Metro”. It includes full integration of Microsoft services such as Zune, Xbox Live

and Bing.

Apps, Apps, Apps

Mobile app stores are booming worldwide. A new market research report by MarketsandMarkets acknowledges that

trend. According to the research firm’s ‘World Mobile Applications Market (2010 –  2015)’ report, the total global mobileapplications market is expected to be worth $25 billion by 2015 (up from about $6.8 billion in 2010).

MarketsandMarkets projects Apple’s App Store to hold nearly 20.5 percent of that particular cake, while the global market

is forecast to record a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 29.6 percent from 2009 to 2014.

According to the report, North America led the market since 2009 with a 41.6 percent revenue share. However, Asia is the

largest market in terms of downloads with 36 percent.

The European mobile applications market stood at $1.2 billion in 2009, but

is expected to become the largest market by 2015, at $8.4 billion and

growing at a CAGR of 33.6 percent during 2010 – 2015.

However, the off-deck mobile applications segment is expected to

experience faster growth in the future, thanks to lowering of entry barriers

and faster establishment of new independent stores, the research firm

adds. MarketandMarkets expects that, by the end of 2015, off-deck mobile

application stores will just surpass the number of downloads from on-deck

stores.

While the numbers vary from report toreport, the overall findings remain the

same: the app market is big business, one

unaffected by the ongoing recession, and

one that has yet to reach a plateau. For

mobile application developers, this latest is

just more good news
