FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE

METAPHORS
Metaphor- is a comparison of two things or ideas
which are normally not related . Do not use like or
as.
Ex: Patricia has a kind heart.
SIMILE
Simile- is a figure of speech using the words like or
as to compare one object or idea with another to
suggest they are alike.
Ex: Her eyes sparkle like diamonds in the sky.
PERSONIFICATION
Personification- is giving human qualities feelings,
action, or charateristics to non- living thing.
EX: The leaves dance in the wind.
HYPERBOLE
Hyperbole- is an exaggeration that is so dramatic
that no one would believe the statement is true.
EX: my stomps are so lound that the ground
shakes.
PUN
Pun- Funny play on words.
EX: I knead my shoe!
ONOMATOPOEIA
The use of a word to describe or imitate a natural
sound or the sound made by an object or an action.
EX: One time I ran into the door and it made a
BOM! Sound.
IDIOM
Idiom- are phrase that mean something different
than what the words say.
EX: There is a frog in my throat.
ALLITERATION
Alliteration- is the repetition of the same initial
letter, sound , of group of sounds in a series of
words.
EX: Peter Piper Picked a peck of pickled peppers.
PALINDROMES
Palindromes- is a word or phase that can be both
forwards and backwards.
EX: A father is a DAD.
