Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Weekend of February 8/9, 2014

In this weekend’s readings and psalm, the prevail-ing theme is that of light: We are the light of the world; our light breaks forth like the dawn; our light shines in the darkness; our light reflects generosity and justice. Good stewards know they are the lamp, and Christ is the flame that, through them, illuminates the earth. They know that they carry Christ’s light in their hearts, and let it shine through their words and deeds. What are we doing to shine Christ’s light on the hungry, the homeless and others most in need of God’s mercy? How do we exercise good stewardship over

the light of Christ that burns within each of us?

Gospel : Matthew 5:13-16 Salt is another image of holiness, and saltiness is given by God. Question for Children: What can you do to bring the light of Jesus into the lives of your family, friends, and people you meet? Question for Youth: How do you feel when Jesus says that YOU are the salt of the earth and that YOU are called to be the light for others? Question for Adults: What specific efforts do you take to maintain your light? Do you let your light dim? Why?

Pray for Respect for Human Life from Conception to Natural Death

NURSING HOME VISITS What a wonderful welcome it is for those living in nearby nursing homes to receive a visit from St. Chris parishioners. Members of the Re-spect for Life Committee have been blessed by participating in this needed ministry. We

would now like to extend this invitation for any interested parishion-ers to join us! ORPHAN CARE IN INDIANAPOLIS You might remember Buddy the Elf grew up in an orphanage, and ended up helping Santa at the North Pole. In 2014 there are no longer orphanages in Indianapolis. A system of Foster Care is intended to provide transitional loving care for children without parents. There is a system of financial compensation that sometimes, rather than love, motivates people to become Foster Parents. If you have some loving space open in your heart you can find out more about Foster Parent-ing at http://www.in.gov/dcs/2955.htm UPCOMING RESPECT LIFE EVENTS: February 15 – 8:30 am : St. Michael Parish – 3rd Sat. - Mass for the Unborn with Rosary and prayer at the Women’s Clinic on 16th

Sanctity of Life Dinner : March 6. Register at www.archindy.org/prolife

The Saint Christopher Respect Life Group is attempting to improve the life of all humans by sharing information and working to support people during their life journey. We are concerned with all of human life from conception to natural death. If you would like to volunteer to assist in visiting the nursing homes or would like to join our group please contact Mark Folger at [email protected] or Paul Guenin at 244-9731. You may also drop in at any of our meetings, held the sec-ond Monday of every month at 6 pm, in the Church basement in the Jericho room. The next meeting is Feb. 10th. Our group needs and welcomes more members.

A BIG thank you to Tom Steiner and the youth ministry for host-ing the Souper Bowl of Caring food drive last weekend at St. Christopher's! The collection was a HUGE success! Your efforts are very much appreciated! Also,

thank you so much to all the people who contributed to this Souper Bowl food drive! Your generosity was overwhelming!!

Thank You!!

How can I help?

We are always looking for volunteers and there is something to fit everyone’s schedule.

February 15th come out and help at the SVdP Distribution Center. We meet in the St. Chris parking lot at 7:30 and work till about noon.

We need help every Saturday at the SVdP Food Pantry and Distribution Center (1201 E Maryland St). The hours are flexible to fit your availability. We could really use some help driving the Distribution Center trucks to help pick up furniture.

I just cleaned out my closets, how do I donate the items I no longer need to SVdP?

To donate furniture or appliances please call the SVdP donation line (317-687-1006) M-F 8:30am - 4:30pm. Beds can be donated and are appreciated. Since 2010 we have had 270+ beds donated! This means that at least 270 people are no longer sleeping on a hard floor! Is it easy to donate furniture and appliances to SVdP?

if you are willing to plan ahead or store the items until we

can get a volunteer to pick it up on a Saturday morning. SVdP has ten trucks available to pick up furniture and appliances. On any given Saturday we have enough volunteers to drive five of the ten trucks to pick up items to be donated. A truck requires a driver and 1or 2 helpers. If we could consistently get enough drivers to use all ten trucks we would be able to increase the response time picking up donations, effectively helping more people. Many people are unwilling to wait a couple of weeks to have a truck pick up their items and end up giving them to other organizations. In the case of beds, other organizations have them recycled for their metal and fabric content, since you cannot sell used beds in Indiana. It is much better when SVdP can give them to people sleeping on the floor. For additional information about SVdP or if you have a truck, car, or van you would like to donate, please contact Paul Guenin at 244-9731 or [email protected]

Always Loving Our Children February 16, 2014 4-9pm

"

Are you feeling a bit overwhelmed by the sudden disclosure that your son or daughter is homosexual? Feeling alone yet knowing you are not?

Come to Fatima for this opportunity to talk with other parents about the ex-

perience of learning your child is gay. Questions flood the mind; feelings overflow; peer pressure and church teachings overwhelm, yet deep in your

soul, you know you will always love your son or daughter no matter what.

Join us as we discuss the challenges that are faced by parents of homosexu-als. We will have a team of presenters gathered to help guide the discussion

that we hope will lead us all to a greater understanding and recover a lost

peace.

February 16, 2014 4:00 - 9:00 pm ~ A light dinner will be served.

There is no registration fee; however, you will have the opportunity to make a freewill donation.
