WEAR RED!
Spring is sprung! The grass is brown! All the
snowbirds have left town!
The joy of living in Tucson, when other places
become nicer, we enter our season of heat and
create “sunbirds.” What was once a draw, being
warmer than many other places in the country,
becomes decidedly less positive when the num-
bers climb into triple digits.
We stop planting, just as planting season hits high gear up north. We enter our
vacation season after many vacationers have headed somewhere else. There
are different seasons, and different needs at different times.
1For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
2a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
3a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
6a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to throw away;
7a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
8a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace. Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8
In our weekly schedule of ‘seasons’, we are to find time to work and to rest
(Sabbath). Just as fields need time to lay fallow and recharge, so do we. I
know I am looking forward to some vacation time this summer. To be honest,
I haven’t figured out when or where yet, but I know the need to rest.
The church since the first days had worship on Sundays to remember the
resurrection every week. Sundays have become days where a lot of things
happen. Many need to work. There are other activities like sports and camping
that happen. For many, just the need to rest from a long week pulls many to
worship at St. Serta and read from the Gospel of St. Mattress.

GROW YOUR FAITH
Worship is something we 'do.' However, do we know some of the reasons why we do what we do?
A new member of our congregation, retired pastor Richard Mauthe, has offered to do a series of
articles on this topic. Read on and learn, and may it deepen and enrich what you do in worship as a
part of the body of Christ gathered. - Pr. David
Notes on our Service of Worship
The Hymn of Praise In our Service of Worship thus far we have come to recognize who we are as we stand before God and
before one another, allowing ourselves to become vulnerable. We confess that we just don’t have our
acts together, and we confess that we are unable to free ourselves from the hurting human condition.
Realizing that, we turn to God in the Kyrie, asking for God’s healing hand to rest upon us, upon our
communities, and upon our world.
In response to what God promises to do we join our voices in a Hymn of Praise. It is in many ways a
sung prayer, because Christian prayer begins with the recognition of who God is:
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father; and
Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain.
Other liturgies may use different images of God, but they all help us understand who God is.
But what we might forget in the moment is that we are not singing alone---each congregation that prais-
es the Lord does not do a solo performance which ends at the last line of the hymn. It is encouraging to
know that when we raise our voices in praise and worship, we are adding our voices to the endless,
eternal song of the creation which is continually praising God:
Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all
that is in them, singing, “To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and hon
or and glory and might forever and ever.” Rev. 5:13
If anything, the truth that our voices join Creation’s ongoing
song of praise should encourage us in our response to the gra-
cious love of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy
Spirit.

Pastor’s Note (Continued)
CONGREGATION UPDATE
To the Members of Our Beautiful
Savior Church,
As President of the Council of
Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, it
is an honor and privilege to serve God
and our church in an important and
meaningful way. It is a pleasure to work with people
who are talented, hard-working, and diligent in their
efforts to best serve our church and our congregation.
Not only as a new member of the Council, but as
President, I must say a special “thanks” to our past
president, Betsy Marco, for all the help she has given
me to succeed her. She has been a blessing for me.
A special “thank you” to Pastor David for his
patience with my newly acquired position. Their
assistance has been extremely valuable. And thank
you congregation for your acceptance.
The council is working closely with team members
to provide the best possible experiences for our
congregation. We are hopeful that new procedures
will be implemented to better serve our church, our
congregation, our children, and our community.
New ideas and growth will be foremost in our
endeavors for this year.
Our quarterly meeting was held on Sunday, April 24,
2016, with updates from each of our teams. Pastor
David is always ready to speak with the
congregation.
We are blessed to have many professional, skilled,
and talented members of our congregation who can
better serve our church and community.
The council is working for you, and with God’s
grace, and forgiveness. We look forward to a
productive year.
With God’s Grace,
Judy Shaffer, President
COUNCIL
O R N E R
CHURCH COUNCIL
meets Monday
May 23, 2016
at 6:15 p.m. Meetings
are open to all.
Some may go on and on about priorities and
discipline, personal choices and what they
say about us. Jesus tells us to go, not sit and
wait. To seek, to tend, to feed, to love.
Therefore we are offering a Wednesday
service at 6pm with communion and
prayers. It is for any and all who need
something to help them get over the hump.
It is for those who Sunday just didn’t work.
It is for those who are uncertain about
Sunday worship and are looking for some-
thing maybe a little more accessible to those
who were not raised in the church. It is for
you. It is for anyone.
It is an attempt to fulfill our mission of
connecting friends, family, neighbors, and
community with our Beautiful Savior.
Come and join us. Invite a friend who may
need it for the season of life they are in.
Use it to remind yourself, and to share the
message that God loves you, and so do I!

MISSION AND
SCHOOL
The Campbell Soup Label program will be discontinued
on July 31, 2016. The Mission receives labels from all
over the country, and many more are mailed directly to
the program headquarters earmarked for the Mission’s
benefit. Over the years the piles of carefully clipped la-
bels have added up to at least 8 new vehicles, along with
tables, chairs, school supplies, and much, much more.
Labels received and recorded prior to July 31 can still
count toward valuable resources for the Mission and
School. Please advise your label collectors so that every-
thing can be sent in by July 1st. 2016. If you have any
questions, contact Pastor Edward Busch @ 626 799 0961.
The Campbell Soup Label program has been a God-send
to Navajo Lutheran Mission. The benefits to the Navajo
people are more than can be numbered. Please accept our
sincere gratitude for the many dedicated individuals and
congregations who have participated.
P.S. You can still send the “box tops for education” from

April 14, 2016
Dear Church Members,
I wanted to thank you for your support of the students at
Butterfield Elementary School. Your Sunday Dollars program
and the support of your congregation have allowed our students
to focus on their learning and to have their basic needs met. You
have provided backpacks, school supplies, books, shoes, jackets
and toiletries for our students and families.
As I prepare to retire and complete my thirty-nine years
in education, I have been doing a lot of reflecting. This program
has been one of the highlights that I keep very dear to my heart. I
have met many of yoru church members and have enjoyed work-
ing with Karen to meet the needs of the students.
As the new principal takes over this position at Butter-
field, I sincerely hope that you will continue to support the But-
terfield students. You have made a difference in the lives of many
children. I sincerely appreciate all you have done and I thank you
again.
Sincerely,
Patricia Abbuhl
