Asdoglovers,wewanttomakesureourcaninecompanionsarehappy,healthyandlookingtheirfurrybest.Regulargroomingen-suresadogishealthyandcomfort-able.Theimportanceshouldnotbeunderestimated!

Therearetwotypesofgroomingtoknow:athomeandprofessional.

At Home GroomingForlong-haireddogbreeds,theircoatswillneedtobegroomedeveryday.Youshouldbeabletocombyourdogrightdowntotheskintoavoidfurmatting.Short-hairedbreedsneedlessregularcoatupkeep.Onceaweekshouldbesufficienttokeeptheircoatsingoodcondition.However,keepinmindthatthemorefrequentlyyougroom,thequickerandeasieritisforbothyouandyourdog.

Themainreasonstosupportregu-largroomingare:

Dirofilariaimmitis,morecom-monlyknownasheartworm,isaroundwormthatcaninfectyourdogandleadtoveryseverehealthproblems,sometimesevendeath.

Heartwormspreadsthroughmos-quitoes.Onceyouranimalisinfect-ed,thewormattackstheheart.Theparasiteresidesintheheartandlargebloodvessels.Astheparasitegrows,itcontinuestodamagelargevesselsandtissues.Thedamagetotheheartandcirculatorysystemleadstoheartfailure.Althoughrare,heartwormcanalsobespreadtohumans.

Althoughtreatable,accordingtotheAmericanHeartwormSoci-ety,heartwormcaninfectyouranimalforupto7yearsbeforeitisnoticedortreatedappropri-ately.Bythistime,thewormshavemultipliedandtherecanbeupto250oftheminfectingyouranimal’sbloodvesselsandheart.Inadvancedcases,theconditionoftheheartbecomesunmanage-ableandcanleadtodeath.Evenifyouranimaldoesrecover,itislengthyandinvolvesmanyinjec-tionsdeepintotheirmuscles.Whilebeingtreated,yourpetisnotallowedtoexercise,jumporanyactivitythatallofourdogsdo.

Manydogandcatownerssaytheirvacationswouldbemoreenjoyableiftheirbelovedpetscouldcomealong.It’simportanttoconsideryourpet’spersonalitybeforetak-inghimoutofhiscomfortzone.Ifheisnervousinunfamiliarsitua-tions,hemaybebetteroffstayinghomewithasitter.However,ifheiseasygoing,atripcouldbeafunwayforyoutobond.Themostimportantthingtoconsiderbeforeplanningatripwithyourfurbabyiswhetherthemajorityofyourva-cationwillbespentdoinganimal-friendlyactivities.Ifyourbuddywillspendmostofthetripstuckinahotel,itwouldprobablybebettertosendhimtoakennel.

Onceyou’vedeterminedthatagetawayisthewaytogo,therearesomeobviousthingstorememberwhenpackingforyourpet,suchasacollarwithanIDtagthatincludesyourcellphonenumber,leash,foodandwaterbowls,andhisregularfood.It’salsoagoodideatobringabedorblanketfromhomebecauseofthefamiliarscent.Akennelisamust-havebecausemostpet-friendlyhotelsrequireourpetstobesafelycontainedevenifthey’rebrieflyleftalone.Somenot-so-obvioustipsincludebring-ingwaterfromhometoavoidanupsetstomach,packingvaccinationrecords,anti-nauseamedicationandalistofemergencyveterinaryclinicsatyourdestination.

buddystretchhislegsandgopotty.

Thereareseveraldog-friendlyget-awayswithineasydrivingdistanceofFargo-Moorhead.ThenorthshoreofLakeSuperiorhasseverallovelyhotels,condosandcabinsthatwelcomefour-leggedfriends.MyhusbandandIhavestayedwithourtwodogsattheCaribouHigh-landsResortnearLutsen,Minn.

Ifcampingismoreyourstyle,mostcampgroundsinND,MNandSDallownon-aggressiveanimalsaslongasownerskeepthemreason-ablyquietandpickuptheirwaste.CrowWingLakeCampground,southofBrainerd,Minn.,includesanoff-leashparkandadogwash-inganddryingstationincaseyourbuddygetsdirty.

Therearealsoplentyofpet-friend-lylodgingoptionsandactivitiesintheTwinCities.Oneofthebestdog-friendlyeventsistheannualMinnesotaRenaissanceFestivalinShakopee,whichevenhasaPetFestthemedweekendwithadoggycostumecontest.On the RailsThere’sgoodnewsforAmtrakrid-erswhowanttohopontheEmpireBuilderlineinFargowiththeirpets.Amtrakrecentlyannouncedapilotprogramtoallowcompan-ionanimalsonitstrains.AmtrakwillbetestingtheservicebetweenMay5andNov.2inIllinois.Thepilotprojectcameaboutbecauseofthe“PetsonTrainsActof2013,”whichwasintroducedintheU.S.House.Ifpassed,thelawwouldrequireAmtraktodesignateatleastonepet-friendlycaroneachpassengertrain,chargeapetfee,andanimalswouldberequiredtoremaininsidetheircarriers.Thelawwouldalsolimitthedistance

ofthetriptolessthan750miles,whichwouldallowaridertogetfromFargotoChicago.

In the Air AlloftheairlinesthatflyoutofFargo’sairporthavepoliciesforcompanionanimalsandserviceanimals.Thefollowinginforma-tionisspecificallyforcompanionanimalsthatwillrideinthecabin.Althoughmanyairlinesallowani-malstobecheckedlikeluggage,itisnotidealbecauseoftheextremetemperaturefluctuationsandnoise.

TheFAArequirespetsinthecabintoremaininsideoftheirapprovedcarriersfortheentireflight.Thecarriersmustbeabletofitunder-neaththeseat,whichunfortunately,excludeslargerpets.Theymustbeabletostandandturnaroundcom-pletelyinsidethecarrier.Soft-sidedispreferablebecauseit’seasiertofitunderneathaseatandmaygiveapetslightlymoreroomtomove.Thedimensionsandfeesforeachairlinecanbefoundonline.

Yorkshire TerrierAmemberofthetoygroupofdogs,theYork-shireTerrierisalotofpersonalitypackedintoatinybody.Thistinyterrierwasabreedde-velopedin19thcenturyEnglandinthecountyofYorkshire.Duringtheindustrialrevolu-tion,clothingmillsinEnglandwereteemingwithrats,andtheselittledynamoswereoftenchargedwithchasingthemdown.Theirsmallsize(onlyreachingamaximumofabout7pounds)andfierceterriernaturemadethemperfectforhuntingintheseclosequarters.

Labrador RetrieverSince1991,themostpopulardogintheUnitedStateshasconsistentlybeentheLabradorRetriever.Prizedasnotonlyacompanionandfamilypet,theLabhaslongbeenadogwithmanyfunctions.Developedinthe19thcenturytoassistEnglishnoblemenintheirduckhunting,theLab-radorisknowntohaveitsrootsintheSt.John’sdog,anativeofNew-foundland.

Perhapsthemostwell-knownmemberoftheretrieverfamily,theLab-radorisanaturalgundog.Becauseoftheireventemperament,theyarealsofrequentlytrainedasservicedogsfortheblind,therapydogs,andlawenforcementscreeningdogs.Asamemberofthefamily,thesedogsarehighlyvaluedandoftenbecomemuchmorethanapet.Becauseoftheirgentletemperament,theyareconsideredexcellentdogsforfamilieswithchildrenofallages,aswellasmulti-pethouseholds.Keepinmind,however,thattheydon’tfullymatureuntilabout3yearsofage,whichmeansthatifyouwelcomeaLabpupintoyourhome,hewilllikelybeveryenergeticandpuppy-likeforquiteawhile.
