It’s not the first time either, but hopefully it’ll be the last. Each time (there have been two) I have had to relinquish my dog(s) in order to find shelter. The homeless shelters in the Fargo- Moorhead area do not accept dogs or any other pets—service or oth- erwise. The first time I was lucky enough to have a neighbor who would take my two beautiful com- panions until 4 Luv of Dog Rescue could assess them and place them with foster and then permanent parents. The second time, I was able to return my beloved Duke to his original owner. As I said, I was lucky. Most people who find themselves homeless do not have many op- tions. They can relinquish their dogs or pets to friends, family or more than likely a local rescue or Humane Society. That’s if they don’t find themselves desperate enough to tie the animal to a fence, tree or leave it at the pound. And I can tell you from experience, that is usually an act of desperation. Very rarely is it done maliciously, no matter how it appears to the average person, one who will go home to a safe place, a warm bed and family that night. Many homeless choose to live on the streets, under bridges, or in the woods in order to not become separated from possibly the only true love, companionship and loy- alty they have left. The first time I was homeless, I watched a woman and her daugh- ter work to conceal a small family friend. A toy dog carrier was bur- ied under these people’s worldly belongings in the back seat of an ancient vehicle. They visited the dog several times a day, and, I hoped, took it for walks, fed and gave it water. They left the back window cracked, but it was August and the temperature would get high during the day. Other patrons of this shelter would constantly re- mind these people to water the dog often and some even tried to do it on their own. Why did they keep the dog in the back seat where it clearly didn’t belong? Because the dog was a part of the family and getting rid of it is akin to leaving a child with strangers. I left the shelter before I found out what happened to that dog, but my fervent hope is that the family did the right thing. What is the right thing? Well, the Humane Society says that they find abandoned dogs at their door about three to four times a year and receive phone calls about abandoned dogs about once a month. Their recommendations on han- dling this situation are similar to my opening remarks. First, start continued on page 2 A man bundles up as he panhandles in Canada with his dog.
