INTRODUCTION

I am delighted to introduce our 2016 Portfolio, the result of continuous selection, tasting, and relationships with growers going back many years.

One of my favourite additions to this Portfolio is a range of wines from Marilyn Lasserre - Les Argelierès. From the Languedoc, the range comprises an (oaked) Chardonnay, a Viognier, a lightly oaked Pinot Noir and finally a Cabernet Franc which has been selected in The Wine Merchant Top 100 2016. We are pleased to advise that in the majority of cases we have been able toeither maintain prices or indeed in some areas make some reductions.

We continue to work with smaller family owned growers who are quality lead. We have an aversion to the UK bottling of wines shipped in bulk and believe that bottling at source delivers better quality. Wherever possible our Portfolio contains wines bottled in the region of production.

Thank you for your continued support - we look forward to working withyou throughout 2016.

Yours sincerely,

David Archibald

Sales Director

High up on the plateau de Pujols, a rocky outcrop overlooking the Dordogne Valley and facing the slopes of Saint Emilion, are the constructions of five successive generations. The entire estate has been modernised and the vineyard is run with passion and painstaking care by Mr Couderc senior, aided, since 1997, by his son Julien, a qualified viticulturist and oenologist.

The foundations of the Château date back to the 15th century, and according to legend, Corbin was the focal point of a stronghold that belonged to the Black Prince. Built in the middle of the 19th century, Corbin was purchased in 1924 by the great-grandparents of the current owners. The Château, which overlooks Château Cheval Blanc, is now run by Jacques Rambeaud who has certainly made his mark since taking over in 2005. The wine now undergoes maturation in 40% new oak which gives added structure and complexity.

MACHARD DE GRAMONT

This domaine is a great source of Burgundy at sensible prices. “Value for money” is not something that is often associated with the wines of the Côte d’Or, however, we have dealt with this family domaine for many years for our commercial Burgundy needs - it offers more individuality than most négociants and consistently performs well. The family owns small parcels in several different appellations and manages to seduce the individual characteristics from each one. This Domaine now uses a blend of American and French oak, developing a unique style in the appellation of Nuits-St-Georges, Gevrey-Chambertin and Pommard.

“One of the most reliable names to search out in Burgundy” - Robert Parker

Age of vines: 30 years old

The cellars of this domaine are situated near the Château de Gevrey-Chambertin on the hillside behind the village. It is here that Christian Sérafin, the son of a Polish émigré, and Pierre Navrocki, his protégé, also of Polish origin, produce outstanding wines, farming bio-logically for a number of years.

His wines are hand crafted, with old vines and low yields central to his winemaking philosophy. A cool ten day maceration helps create a stunning richness and concentration with the diligent use of new oak and the non-filtration of his wines being key to the Sérafin style. He destems 70% of the bunches. The grapes are fermented at a relatively high temperature and enjoy 100% new oak ageing. This is truly one of Burgundy’s greatest domaines. We know of no other winemaker who manages to seduce such underlying power from the Pinot Noir without losing that inimitable elegance.

Christian Sérafin

“Many people in Burgundy believe Serafin is producing the finest wines in Gevrey Chambertin” - Robert Parker

After suffering a heart attack last year, Jean-Claude and Anna Breliere took the momentous decision to sell their domaine and live a less stressful life. Sadly none of their children wished to take over the domaine. Their deep sadness was palpable when we visited them for the last time in November. Jean - Claude took over this 7 ha domaine, certified organic as from the 2012 vintage, along with his wife Anna, from his Father in 1983, who himself established the property back in 1948.

Over the years they have built it into one of the best domaines, arguably the best domaine, in the Rully appellation. We will miss them both. Needless to say, 2014, his last vintage is exceptional. He has bowed out at the very top.

DOMAINE TESTUT – CHABLIS

“Testut’s wines are the purest we have ever tasted. A winemaker who is passionate about what he produces.”

Cyril Testut is the latest generation of his family to run this 13 ha domaine. Their involvement in Chablis proceeded in fits and starts as it began in 1967 with the purchase of the Château de Grenouilles. The Testut clan grew the domaine to an impressive 60ha.

Between 1982 and 1997 most of the wine was sold to négociants but the 1998 vintage marked the point where the domaine began to bottle most of its production; today approximately 90% of it is sold under the Domaine Testut name.

Testut explains that his approach to viticulture is “lutte” raisonée, or a philosophy where the imperative is to treat only when the signs of a pending infestation or disease are present, rather than treating in anticipation of a problem. Moreover he stresses that he never uses anti-rot treatments believing that they do more harm than good. Testut believes in harvesting late as the fruit must be ripe if the resulting wine is to be of real quality.

Chablis Testut

Chablis Grand Cru “Grenouille”

Variety: 100% Chardonnay grown in Kimmeridgian clay. Hand harvested. 50 + year old vines

Character: A relatively discreet touch of wood frames a ripe and ever-so-mildly exotic nose of mostly dried yellow fruit. There is a seductive, even succulent mouth feel to the caressing medium weight flavours, exuding a fine bead of minerality on the attractively intense, balanced and lingering finish.

VIGNOBLES BRUNIER - DOMAINE DU VIEUX TÉLÉGRAPHE - RHÔNE

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe needs little introduction and is widely acknowledged as being one of the finest estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. In 1998 the Brunier brothers purchased the once famous Domaine Les Pallières which is now producing the quality of wine for which it has an enviable reputation.

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe is the family’s cradle and heart, but also the standard-bearer and flagship of Les Vignobles Brunier.

Situated since its origin on Plateau de La Crau, in the southeast of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC, the estate has grown, developed and matured on this vast stony terrace which, generation after generation, has imparted all of its character.

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe

Châteauneuf du Pape“Legendary in its own right ”

Le Pigeoulet des BrunierVariety: 80% Grenache Noir, 10% Syrah, 5% Carignan, 5% Cinsault

Vine age: 25 years average

Character: Produced from two separate vineyards, the first is a 7ha parcel in the Côtes de Ventoux, while the second is a 3ha vineyard situated on the boundary of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. 50% of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in large oak foudres with the remainder in stainless steel tank. The final blend is then aged for a further four months in foudres.

TélégrammeDomaine du Vieux Télégraphe

Variety: 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Cinsault

Vine Age: 30 years

The grapes are fully destemmed before traditional 12-day fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. A period of 9 months ageing in concrete tanks is followed by 6 months in oak foudres. The blend is now bolstered by the addition of grapes from 45 year old vines of Chateau La Roquette, VT’s sister property. The result is a wonderful exuberant style, succulent, rich and ripe. Drink while you wait for “La Crau” to age.

Gigondas ‘Terrasse du Diable’Domaine Les PallieresVariety: 85% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre and Clairette

Vine Age: Average 60 years

Character: Cuvée “Terrasse du Diable” encompasses the low-yielding vines from the higher altitudes that express great structure and intense minerality. Facing North West and grown on a stoney rock soil, the 45 year old vines produce a beautiful spicy wine, complex characters of mineral and ripe black fruits with hints of white pepper.

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe“La Crau”

Variety: 65% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah and 5% Cinsault, Clairette and others

Character: Produced from vineyards located on the stony plateau of La Crau in the south east of the appellation, where the villages of Bedarrides and Courthezon meet. The vines average 60 years of age and the vineyard is the hottest in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is always one of the first to pick. The grapes are handpicked, sorted and partially destemmed and then fermented in stainless steel tanks for between 25 - 35 days. After nine months in concrete tanks, the wine is then aged for 10 months in large oak foudres and then bottled, without filtration, after 20 months.

Marilyn lasserre- P R O D U C E R O F L E S A R G E L I È R E S -

A pioneer in the renewed success of Languedoc’s wines.

Marilyn is a genuine pioneer. Since she arrived back to France in 2008, she has significantly contributed to the renewed success of Languedoc’s wines. Bringing her feminine touch to traditionally strong, rustic and full-bodied wines, Marilyn succeeded in improving quality and taste with a rigourous selection in the vineyards and perfect control of the winemaking process. Marylin studied Viticulture and Oenology in Bordeaux, and has spent time working in various regions throughout the world.

“I started in Bordeaux (St. Emilion) in 1996 and stayed in the South west for 6 years (2 vintages in the Côtes de Gascogne and 4 years in Vignerons de Buzet). This was logical because I’m originally from the Landes region. For seven years I alternated wine making in Europe and in the southern hemisphere in places such as South Africa, Spain, Australia and latterly the USA. I finally returned to France in 2008.”

VIOGNIER

Colour: Bright yellow with green huesNose: Apricot and mango aromas mixed up with a whiff of rose petals and almondsTaste: Juicy with herbal hints and a lingering finish

Character: The ripe grapes are harvested at night when temperature is cool preserving the variety’s lovely flavours. In the cellar the grapes are destemmed and pressed under inert gas to pre-vent from oxidation. The juice macerates for a few days at very low temperature, and is stirred every day on its lees adding complexity and pure aromas to the must. After fermen-tation, the wine stays on its fine yeast creating the velvety texture.

Serve chilled with asparagus risotto, veal, carbonara pastas, spicy dishes...

CABERNET FRANC

Colour: Dark purple redNose: Blackcurrant and green pepper aromasTaste: Smooth, fruity along with a spicy finish

Character: Our winemakers look for the best time to harvest. The grapes are, then, de-stemmed, crushed and sent to maceration for about ten weeks. This long process is ideal to extract the fruity character of the variety. Daily tastings by our experts in the cellar ensure a nice structure with supple tannins.

Serve at room temperature with grilled meats, duck lasagna, meat balls...

CHARDONNAY

Colour: Bright yellowNose: Ripe peach combined to melon hints and subtle fresh toast aromasTaste: elegant and smooth with a wonderful viscosity and a persistent finish

Character: The grapes are harvested at full ripeness. A short skin-contact maceration is carried out. After gentle pressing and meticulous off-settling, the juice ferments at low temperature. The fermentation is very slow and can last sometimes up to one month. An ageing on fine lees is carried out to add smoothness. Finally only the purest juice has been fermented and aged with French new oak staves.

Serve chilled with mild blue cheese, onion chutney and poultry...

PINOT NOIR

Colour: Glossy garnet redNose: Raspberry and cherry aromas with subtle smoky and peppery hintsTaste: Fruity, elegant, well-balanced and a silky long finish

Character: Optimal ripe grapes are essential for a good Pinot Noir. The full aromatic potential has al-ready been developed, but the sugar content should be relatively low in order to preserve the variety’s elegant style. For that, a part of the crop is harvested quite early and ferments at low temperature exalting fruity aromas. The other part, fully ripe, undergoes a traditio-nal, long maceration. About one third ages in French oak barrels for many months adding a lot of complexity to the wine.

Serve at room temperature with veal, quail, omelette, cheeses...

Les Argelières is a tribute to the “Terroir” from which we sourced this Chardonnay, a terroir mostly made of pebble and limestone perfectly exposed to the sun. It enhance the fruit aromas as well as the mineral style of the white wines. The Pays d’Oc has a heritage of over 2600 years of vine-growing and winemaking tradition. Along the centuries, the wine trade became more and more structured and grew rapidly. The region greatly benefits from the Mediterranean climate, bringing warm mist, and the Black Mountain which offers limestone and clay “terroirs” with cool temperatures.

XAVIER ROGER - CARCASONNE

Xavier Roger “One of the Languedoc’s finest

innovative winemakers”

Mastering the nuances of Southern French varietals and combining traditional and modern winemaking techniques, these wines have been produced to our own specification and are superb examples of the quality that are now being produced in the South of France. Using the best parcels in the area, the quality of the range is truly outstanding and demonstrates the quality of wines that can be produced in this area of France.

Marsanne ViognierThis blend is made with two traditional grape varieties from the South of France. The Marsanne gives smoothness to the wine, whilst the Viognier gives a wonderful fruit element.

Varieties: 70% Marsanne, 30% Viognier

A combination of two noble and oft-overlooked grape varieties, grown in the warm south of France around Carcassone, this is our humble nod toward the great whites of the southern Rhone. Thin soils, low yields and attention to detail by our ‘Guru’ winemaker, Xavier Roger, give this ripe, soft and balanced dry white an exotic and immensely pleasurable character – it offers sun ripened flavours such as apricots, dessert apples and citrus, with a wonderful streak of balancing acidity.

Alicante BouschetThis tremendous cuvée is made in Languedoc-Roussillon, South of France. This wine comes from a selection of the best parcels in the area, made by the head winemaker Xavier Roger.

Variety: 85% Alicante Bouschet, 15% Grenache

Alicante Bouschet is an obscure red grape with red juice, a rarity in the homogoneous world of grapes. Grown sparingly in the southern French vineyards around Carcassone, its richness and velvet-like concentration has been intensified by the thin soils, dry climate and attention to detail by our resident ‘Guru’ winemaker, Xavier Roger. The Grenache adds balance and warmth.

This ripe and attractive red shows a deep purple hue, with an aromatic and powerful nose of crushed and mulled black fruits, cherry and a twist of spice.

OVC - Old Vines CarignanThis cuvee was produced in the Languedoc, Southern France, from batches specially selected by the winemaking team. The Carignan grape has existed in the Languedoc for many years, and the vines are on average 40 years old. The limiting gravellous soil, the South-facing exposure, and the naturally low yielding are the perfect conditions for producing rich, concentrated, ripe grapes.

Variety: 100% Carignan

Old Vines Carignan. Making a Silk purse from a sow’s ear has long been a tradition in winemaking worlds. Here is an example of the’ ultimate’ Silk purse from the most obscure and ugly sow of a grape! The oft overlooked black Carignan.

Our resident ‘Guru’ winemaker, Xavier Roger, has wrestled a meagre quantity of super-ripe grapes from a desolate hillside patch of 85 year old bush vine Carignan, grown on thin limestone soils around the town of Carcassone. This is a stunning ripe and soft red, offering pleasure and soft black forest fruits and a smattering of Parma Violets. Perfect with roasted meats and soft cheeses.

MalbecThis Malbec was grown in the Languedoc, in the South of France, near Béziers. The “terroir” provides excellent ripening conditions for this high potential grape variety, with fresh, fruity aromas and high quality tannins.

Variety: 100% Malbec

Ah, the mighty Malbec! A red grape planted throughout the World, where its deeply generous flavours have been encouraged to make even more powerful and full flavoured red wines.

However, in the hands of our resident ‘Guru’ winemaker, Xavier Roger, this is an intensely pleasurable and soft Malbec, with richness of fruit, soft red currant and coffee aromas offered in equal amounts. The combination of thinner soils, attention to detail and the dry climate of southern France has given a ripe and warm red with a lick of red-fruit jam and spice. Enjoy with roast meats such as Boar and suckling pig.

“The quality of the range is truly outstanding”

Grapes grown in the Douro terroir contain high levels of tannins and sugar, ideal for producing superior quality table wines. However, this winemaking potential was overlooked for years as priority was given to Port.

Poças was a pioneer in recognizing the region’s aptitude for producing good table wines. When Jorge Pintão joined the firm’s winemaking team, his oenological experience in Bordeaux and the Medoc was the key that led him to launch the first Coroa d’Ouro red wine in 1990. This wine was such a resounding success that the firm soon began to expand its range of quality Douro table wines.

CLARENDON HILLS

Roman Bratasiuk produced his first vintage in 1990 and quickly established Clarendon Hills as one of the finest estates in Australia.

Small parcels of grapes are selected from old dry grown vineyards in the Clarendon, Blewitt Springs and Kangarilla sub-regions of South Australia. All the vineyards are within six kilometres of the winery about 40km south of Adelaide. The grapes are hand picked and then fermented with indigenous yeasts in open stainless steel tanks for the reds and new French oak barriques for the whites. The red wines are bottled after 18 months.

This technique produces rich, complex wine that will age very well and complement food superbly. Roman’s aim is to make world class wines.

AVONDALE – SOUTH AFRICA

Avondale,Johnathan Grieve

“Our ethos, “Terra Est Vita” meaning ‘Soil is Life’ encapsulates our view of Avondale Estate as a

dynamic living system”

Below the Klein Drakenstein Mountains is an estate which uses a holistic approach to wine-farming known the BioLOGIC® approach which combines organic and biodynamic principles with modern science.

Johnathan Grieve developed the BioLOGIC® approach which sought to develop great wines in a healthy, balanced environment. ‘Terra Est Vita’ is their ethos and it means ‘soil is life’. Production uses simple methods such as a posse of ducks to eat the snails or releasing certain types of wasp to eat the mealy bugs. Chemicals and fertilizers are not used, but the nitrogen levels are restored in the ground by growing cover crops. The wines are top quality whilst maintaining their natural philosophy.
