ORGANIZATION
IDEPCONSULT - Mounir Saroufim and Partners is a group of Architects, Engineers and Designers founded in 1979 by Architect and Urban Planner Mounir Saroufim. The main offices are located in Beirut, Lebanon, with branches in Doha, State of Qatar and Cairo, Egypt. IDEPCONSULT has also a representation office in Geneva, Switzerland.
It has been developing during the past years to provide a full professional service for all types of building projects. The flexibility and continuity in the execution and control of projects is obtained by including several members who provide specialized professional services on a consulting basis. All members of the group are fully qualified and experienced in their particular field and have been trained in the United States and Europe or in universities in the Middle East. Each member has had personal experience in architectural and engineering design and supervision throughout the Middle East.
IDEPCONSULT’s professional practice is based on the belief that building design is an integral expression of the spirit of man, thus convinced of its social responsibility to meet man’s basic needs.
IDEPCONSULT adheres to the principle of hiring the best knowledge to develop technically perfect building, aesthetically pleasing and economically feasible. However, we reject imitations that tend to destroy the evolution of the area’s cultural concept and therefore emphasize the new rehearsed expression that is derived from the continuity of a well-coordinated physical environment. This is achieved through constant team approach that forces the solution to be evolved by the utilization of combined knowledge. Furthermore, the final physical expression of a building is achieved by the continuity of the creative process of design all through the final management stages of the construction.
The founders and senior staff of IDEPCONSULT have been in the construction and engineering business for 40 years. IDEPCONSULT has designed more than 200 projects ranging from residential, commercial, hospitality to office buildings.

AWKAR, LEBANON The approach we had for the project was to limit as much as possible the access to the car to the plot by developing efficient and user friendly roads and walkways. The cars have the minimum impact on the neighborhood and are located on the periphery of the plot limit. The master plan aims in reducing the parking footprint to minimize parking surfaces forcing all of the cars to park in the undergrounds.
At the main northern entrance we have implemented an office building having at the ground floor the administration offices who will manage the whole project.
The blocks are positioned on the site in a way to use as much as possible the slopes, east/west in the northern part and north/south in the southern. The latter are separated by a pivoting country club.
The internal pedestrian space located between the blocks generates public spaces to encourage social interaction and promote physical and mental well-being. Hardscaped material selection should take into consideration the allowance for water filtration.
The landscaping encourages the use of native vegetation, reverses desertification and prevents rainwater runoff. The environment considerations that can be developed in the future phases of the design can take be in relation to water depletion, materials depletion, water pollution, creating a system for the collection and storage of rainwater…

The Gazeiri Building is located outside the Lebanese American University, Beirut Campus, Lebanon on Emile Edde Street and Sadat Street. This new extension, will house all design departments including School of Fashion Design, School of Graphic Design, School of Architecture, and School of Interior design along with their needed workshops, storage areas, labs and administration.Originally, the Gezairy building was composed of a tower and a main building with different levels and heights. IDEPCONSULT’s approach was to demolish the tower’s upper floors and use the recovered square meters along with the previously unbuilt areas to create an extension building in a way that it transformed the U shaped building to a concentrated building on a central courtyard. Following this transformation, the Gazeiri Building is composed of thirteen levels; five underground levels composed of three parking stories and another two stories that cater for labs and auditoriums. The ground floor level opens on a central courtyard – mingling space for all students and summer exhibition space. The main cafeteria, as well as the wood and metal workshops also give on the courtyard. The top floors are studios and classrooms for the different departments.Colors and patterns developed are assigned by story to enhance the specificity of each design departments. Common areas are all in grey and white color scheme as they are the link between all different departments.Special care on the design was developed for all recreational and student/faculty mingling spaces such as the cafeteria, the main lounge on the thirteenth floor and its annex open air space.

An elegant and linear design concept
The Lebanese American University is a leading, nonsectarian, private higher education institution in Lebanon. It operates under a charter from the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York and is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The University has more than 8,100 students enrolled.
Through generous donations the University was able to refurbish their facilities in September 2013. The main focus was the Cafeteria, the social areas, the gym, the dancing hall and the offices.
LAU aimed for a modern architectural design maintaining elegant and straight lines. The solution supplied by Zumtobel was a perfect fit to the concept. SLOT LIGHT was used to provide a calm and diffuse light in a continuous line without dark spots that could disturb the students. Especially the gym, dancing and music hall needed a bright uniform lighting to avoid shadows and offer excellent visibility. The straightforward lines provide effective lighting and guidance in the hall ways.
ONDARIA, mainly used in the social areas suits the modern setting of the University. A discreet indirect component for ceiling illumination underlines the luminaire’s three-dimensional effect and adds a young vibrant design to the room. ECOOS completes the linear and contemporary design in the offices and offers a relaxed and pleasant lighting effect.
No daylight enters the spaciously designed cafeteria of the University, which is also the core get-together venue for the students between classes. The importance was to create the feeling of natural daylight streaming through the room to enhance wellbeing and energize the students. A tailor-made lighting solution of 3 skylights meets exactly those needs. Fluorescent lamps provide a balanced solution with warm and cold colour temperatures under a cove. The intelligent lighting control system adjusts intensity and color of light according to the actual day time. This solution allows setting as many different scenes as required and is able to simulate any time of day as well as seasons.

DescriptionConceived as the fifth magnet within the regeneration of Beirut city center, this site is intrinsically linked to Beirut Souks. Located on Patriarch Hoyek Street, the principal vehicular approach to the Waterfront District, it is the last segment within the pedestrian network that connects the Hotel District to the commercial city center. The project includes retail, restaurants and cafés, high-end serviced furnished apartments, Spa and Wellness Center.
The scheme achieves a successful massing response to the local context by means of a well-planned arrangement and the introduction of a central courtyard, which creates a public destination within the development. The residential wing is entered from the southwest corner, the calmest part of the site, and enjoys easy access to the courtyard with its many public elements. A connection on the rooftop offers access to the spa, roof garden and sun terrace with its spectacular views.
The retail component facing Beirut Souks is highly visible and easily accessible creating a vibrant new commercial area. The stores, restaurants and cafés will benefit from the additional pedestrian traffic that is to cross the courtyard. The wellness center features top design, equipment and professionals to cater for a demanding clientele. A variety of access points respond to the unique needs of each potential client, and the interior spaces have strong sensitivity to light and privacy requirements.

DescriptionThis residential building is located in a growing quiet residential neighborhood just outside the capital Beirut in New Mar Takla, Hazmieh. It consists of two blocks of five floors, catering for twenty units. The design intent was to have sixteen units of 220 and 225 square meters, with two duplexes of 335 square meters. We have aimed to have two simplexes with high ceiling of 4.5 meters. The difficulty of the site, located between parallel streets with a slope of 20 meters, has generated two bridges to connect the buildings to the upper road for pedestrian access, while keeping the lower one for the underground parking.Double height ceiling entrance, with concrete staircase connecting the floors, allows for transversal transparency to the valley.Large glass openings were opted for extensive daylight entering as deep as possible inside the apartment. The external beige stone was procured locally from neighboring quarries.

DescriptionThe proposed Headquarters are located in the “Portside Project” in an urban setting. In today’s world, people are looking for places where life, work and play combine and overlap. The bank’s new premises spread over six floors with a branch on the ground floor with its mezzanine.Until recently, all offices were designed to follow one specific strategy, open workplace designed to fostering employee collaboration and a free flow of ideas; a direct counter reaction to the cubicle work culture of past decades that sought to maximize employee efficiency and focus while providing some semblance of privacy. This approach’s downfall is that it usually leads to concentration-breaking incidents as constant interruptions from fellow workers and overheard loud conversations. Office design needs to take into account spaces for concentrated individual work, collaboration, training or education and socializing. While developing the interior scheme, Idepconsult opted for a look and feel of the spaces that are informal contrary to what would have been traditionally envisioned for a financial services company. We chose it to be versatile, laid back and very collaborative. The design intent was to have all services such as bathrooms, kitchen, printing and storages, enclosed in a wooden volume near the secondary elevators whereas all open spaces occupy the façade facing areas. Those key spaces cater for open plan desks, lounges and recreational areas, as well as clusters of different sizes to cater for the different task that would help boost employee productivity.Annex to the wooden volumes are glass enclosed spaces for quiet working spaces suitable for group meetings, concentration, conference calls or individual video conferencing and this to avoid disturbing the staff working in the open space.

DescriptionThe ABC department store is one of the prime retail shops in Lebanon. It has two major branches and a third one that opened its doors in July 2017. The lighting design scheme was developed for all the ABC department store branches and coordinated with the international ID consultant KKD and local architect A-Consult. It is based on the psychology of the end user and wayfinding strategies using the Limbic study.
ABC Ashrafieh Department Store branch is composed of four stories with an overall area of 10,000 square meters of retail space. The store houses the women, men, kids, household and cosmetics departments along with a bookshop, a barber and two cafes.
According to the Limbic Study Various target groups respond differently to various lighting implementations. In presentation and retail applications in particular, the effectiveness of lighting and the buying motives of the addressed customer group are very closely linked.
The lighting concept was then slightly altered to cater for the different target groups per department in a way to enhance the sense of well-being and extend the amount of time they spend in a store. This in turn boosts sales.

ClientMaronite Church of Saint Elias
Appointment - Completion2014 - 2017
Project CostNot disclosed
DescriptionThe Mar Elias Church was built in the early twentieth century. Following the Lebanese Civil war, it was completely renovated in 2001.In 2008 while the face-lifting of the facades was undertaken, we were approached to intervene in the design and engineering works related to the church’s renovation with a special care to its lighting.A generous Donor funds yearly renovation works such as reception areas to revamp with new furniture and acoustics, stained glass panels and facades to maintain, and the latest works; a new internal lighting scheme.
Originally designed with sodium up-lights to highlight its Basilica Type architecture, the Church was over-lit but had a very warm-like feeling as if in a cocoon that matched the earthiness of the existing stone walls. The current lighting scheme chooses to tone down the intensity and draw the detailed features of the church.
Following the renovation, the walls were stripped down to their original state uncovering the clay stone that emanates a very warm feeling both to the eye and to the touch. As for the central vaulted ceiling, the white painted plaster remains, creating a contrast between the human level and the celestial level. As the result of the above, the series of arcades that structure the space are drawn with light to emphasize the rhythm. One feels humble but at ease as there is warm like lighting on the lower part of the space and the ceiling is floodlighted with a cooler temperature light.
The Pieta was front-lit with narrow and wide beams projectors but the surprise came from the trick sconce that gives the impression that there is a hallo of light behind Jesus’ head. The Alter area receives a special lighting.
The Cross hand painted by Romanian artists is lit with two crossed sculpture lenses projectors on track. There is a special emphasis also made for the marbled Choir area and the glass alter.
