    www.transformingspacesbahamas.com CALL FOR ENTRIES

Transforming Spaces is now in its eighthyear and has become a significant com-ponent in the development of visual art inNew Providence. Our tours have pro-vided a window into the galleries, studios, artwork and lives of the best visual artorganizations and practitioners in thecountry. The Transforming Spaces mis-sion has been to promote local artists,

reflect current trends in Bahamian art,and expose and educate patrons to theinner workings of the Bahamian art indus-try while challenging both artists and au-diences to create and perceive art in newand innovative ways.

In the spirit of our mission to expose, in-novate, challenge and encourage aunique cross fertilization between thecreative disciplines, Transforming

Spaces 2012 will engage in an excitingnew exercise a curated tour with a sin-gle theme. In conjunction with the Crea-tive Nassau Initiative a local committeeof artists, designers, craftspeople andwriters working to have Nassau desig-nated a UNESCO City of Craft and Folkart we present FIBRE.

FIBRE is a call to fine artists, designers ofall types, architects, photographers, as

well as other local artisans to put asidethe traditional scope of materials and toengage your creative processes withinand without the limitations of fibrous ma-terials from any part of the countrys in-digenous plants (e.g. banana, palm trees, sisal, coconut palm). We are also inter-ested in literary, poetic and historical re-sponses.

The goal of FIBRE is to challengeparticipants to look at the history oflocal materials and to re-imagine theiroriginal purposes, characteristics andcontexts.

We are looking for a response tothese materials that honor the past, but more importantly, seek to breathenew life into how we see these mate-rials in the modern world. There areno limitations to what form your solu-tions take. Both utilitarian and non-functional objects are acceptable.

    Participants should push the enve-

lope with regard to how the materialsare manipulated and fabricated.Other support materials may be usedto assist in the structural or mechani-cal aspects of your designs but themajority of the material must be madefrom fibres. Both individuals as wellas teams may submit ideas. Concep-tual responses will also be ac-cepted.

If you are interested in participat-ing in this unique event, pleaseattend a formal presentation onFIBRE at the National Art Gallery ofThe Bahamas on WEDNESDAY,NOVEMBER 2, 2011.

Guidelines will be presented andquestions will be answered at thistime. You may also contact theTransforming Spaces Committee at
