Culture and Heritage than by merely sun, sand and sea.”

    IN THIS ISSUE

The author (right) and his wife with three generations of his family

The origin ofThe Colourful History of The Bahamas: A Sou-venir Guide for Visitorscan be traced back to the summer of1972 when John Chaplin, Headmaster of St. Andrew’s

School, asked Murray, a newly recruited history teacher, tointroduce an 8-week course in Bahamian History. Duringthis time Murray’s job was to prepare students for the British-based GCE examination so no Bahamian History wastaught. It was not until 1992 that a Bahamian-based syllabuswas finally introduced for the new BJC and BGCSE Examsto test students’ knowledge of Bahamian and West IndianHistory.

Murray’s preparations for the new syllabus, guided byTheStory of The Bahamas by Paul Albury, A History of The Ba-hamas by Michael Craton, and later the superbIslanders inthe Stream by Michael Craton and Gail Saunders, led to thepublication by Media Enterprise of his first textbook:Baha-mian History Highlights – Condensed and Illustrated whichbecame available for BGSCE History students in 1999.

About ten years later, on a visit to Vancouver Island, Murraycame across a little souvenir guide to the history of Victoria. It had only 34 pages, with just a little explanatory text, but itwas illustrated with the most beautiful photographs of thecity. An idea began to form - why not a similar little book

about The Bahamas? The history was already there, andplenty of pictorial material was available, thanks to his wife,Stephanie to whom the book is dedicated. Murray has beensuitably inspired by her collections of old photographs, docu-ments, prints and maps, some of which are reproduced bypermission in the book. Over the next five years, a number ofpeople – family, friends, and associates – contributed to thedevelopment of the finished product.

The Colourful History of The Bahamas offers no new historybut rather is an introduction to many of the interesting charac-ters who have come to the islands in years gone by. With 34pages and short explanatory text, it is filled with more than 80illustrations from the past and the present and will be anadded bonus to the millions of visitors who come to The Ba-hamas each year.

At the Sunday Launch, when Murray will be available to sign

his book, some of the book’s illustrations will be on display aswell as a power point presentation followed by an Author’sTalk on Wednesday, November 18 from 6-8pm along with amore extensive power point presentation.

REPORT BY OUR CORRESPONDENT, BAHAMIANALISTAIR STEVENSONfrom Jingdezhen China :

The ceramics fair went great! Lots of people came by and

took interest in what is going on in Bahamian ceramics! Imade a lot of contacts and have some possibilities of show-ing in other places. Patricia Meicholas' books went like hotcakes! People also took a great interest in Joann Behagg'sfish, especially the more mature audiences who know whatit's like to string up fish. Max Taylor's bowls were well re-ceived as well as his pieces are completely different in tech-nique, colour and subject. My work brought attention considering the forms are veryabstract and loose in nature, presented as over-sized porce-lain necklaces (seen in photo below). The objects/beadsused are a mix of Bahamian driftwood, coral and buoy forms

along with Chinese stones and bricks slip casted in highfired porcelain, some glazed in celadon, red and olive greenwhile others are left raw white. They are then strung along indifferent designs to create stone age looking, necklace like pieces. The work discusses how people, via migration, canconstantly develop an understanding of cultures and self. The manifestation of these Stone Age like pieces simplyexpress how aged and pure this concept of learning andcultural connection is.It was truly a great time being able to participate!
