This Kids Count data book eresents a statisticalportrait of the well-being of and conditions faced by the children ofKansas, based on key indicators. Nineteen indicators are sletailed infive subject areas: (1) economic well-being; (2) physical health andsafety; (3) educational achievement; (4) emotional well-being; and(5) social behavior and social control. Data are presented in a tableformat by individual indicator and by county, and include comparativeinformation concerning current year and past years and the percent ofchange over time. A demographic description of each county and ashort summary highlighting individual county findings are provided.The findings indicate both improvements and worsened conditions.Areas of improvement include: (1) Head Start participation ofchildren ages 3 and 4 living below the poverty level; (2) reportedchild abuse and neglect; (3) births that received prenatal care; (4)
high school graduates pursuing post-secondary education/training; and(5) childhood deaths. Indicators with worsening findings include: (1)
births to single teens; (2) out-of-home placements; (3) teen violentdeaths; (4) children living in poverty; (5) children under 18receiving assistance; (6) confirmed child abuse/neglect; (7) lowbirth weight babies; (8) kindergartners fully immunized by age 2; (9)high school graduations; and (10) juvenile arrests. The report'sappendices explain selection of indicators and include data notes andsources. (SD)
